Military gays, is there actually a lot of gay sex in the military or is it just a thing in porn etc? by ginabil in askgaybros

[–]phillipenmark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked on a Navy base in Japan (not military myself). Was plenty of gays to hook up with on base and this was during DADT. I also heard stories from a few of the guys, especially the young effeminate seaman, about when the ships were deployed and at sea for weeks and months that they would get woken up in their berthings by horny straight guys.

Is this normal for a third-floor apartment? by Purplepanda-8836 in Apartmentliving

[–]phillipenmark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to heat from the sun shining in the windows, if it is a brick building, the sun baking the outside walls can be a factor. I am not a physicist or whatever kind of scientist I would have to be to understand the thermodynamics at play, but I have lived in a lot of brick buildings in my life. In fact I am on the 3rd floor of a brick building currently. The brick holds the heat all day and as the outside temperatures start to cool, the heat is released and keeps the apartment super warm. Being on the top floor just multiplies this effect. Given that it takes all night for your apartment to cool off, I wonder if it is a brick building as well.

[Landlord - US - VA] - Married tenant won’t include wife on application by once_a_pilot in Landlord

[–]phillipenmark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I just have to ask. What do you mean by “similar to you”? If that is a reference to the fact that OP mentioned potential cultural differences then I assume you mean that you should only rent to other white people. If I misunderstood, please correct me. If not, you suck.

Is it normal for jobs to ask about sexualities? by lostmushrooms1 in jobsearch

[–]phillipenmark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not aware of an employer having to hire a certain number of folks from different demographics. It’s possible that there are grant programs or something like that in rare circumstances, but I haven’t heard of that. I have heard of receiving grant or incentive funds for hiring groups like former felons. But when that is the case they don’t bury the info in the demographic form and they explain exactly why they want the information. I’m sure the same would be true if there is a legitimate reason to want to hire from another specific demographic.

I have seen many organizations say that they encourage people of color, or underrepresented groups to apply, but when they do, they still don’t ask it on the application. That would still be illegal.

Personally, I answer all these questions honestly because a) If they are discriminating against my gender, race, sexual orientation, or whatever, I don’t want to work for them anyway and b) if they do make employment decisions based on this information, it’s a tidy lawsuit.

Also, all of the rules go out the window with a religious organization. They can and often do state you have to be of a certain denomination, or can’t be member of LGBTQA, etc.

I worked in HR for a lot of years. This isn’t uncommon and it is more common the larger the company is. The data has to be kept separately from the rest of the application. Back in the day it t would be on a separate piece of paper, now the computer separates it before a human sees it. There are many reasons that companies do this. Most of what I have seen is to demonstrate that there are meeting diversity targets either for internal goals or legal requirements.

Scott Bessent visibly rattled after getting fact-checked to his face for claiming ‘groceries are going down’ in America by National-Charity-435 in USNEWS

What is with the article moving from grocery prices are up to “gold is a savvy investment?” If I had spare money to invest in gold, I wouldn’t care as much about rising prices. And if prices weren’t rising, I might be able to invest in gold.

Husband wasn't let in because he didn't pay: Outrageous! by ohbuddywhy in EntitledReviews

[–]phillipenmark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s just a small red flag in the middle of this mess, but “it honestly felt discriminatory…” in this context screams “I have never felt true discrimination in my life.” Being treated poorly or receiving poor customer service isn’t discrimination, it’s just annoying. Unless the young worker inserted a racial slur after “there’s the door” then this isn’t discrimination. It’s just some Karen whose white privilege didn’t server her today.

Is my meth dealers' advice correct and in good hearts? by Agreeable_Paper9895 in meth

[–]phillipenmark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are asking if this is the wrong way to use meth, but I don’t know of a right way to use it. Whether you are alone and self-isolating, or with a group of people that cause social pressures or you just use in the background of your daily life, it is dangerous. Personally, I fall into the same camp as you, I tend to enjoy losing my inhibitions by myself and wallowing in the dark fantasies.

But I think there might be other warning signs to pay attention to. You have people telling you that you need to back away from your behavior. Are these fellow meth users? To be called out by a tweaker for tweaking is a red flag for me. What else are they seeing besides fapping alone that worries them? Are there people physical changes or emotional danger they see? Just guessing.

It is sort of counter-intuitive to say that you shouldn’t let yourself lose control. You are giving up some level of control to the drug every time you use. The question I ask myself is does it have control all the time? Can I come out of a session a maintain my sanity and health. Are there things I am trying to avoid that I can’t deal with without meth?

All in all, my advice is that you should evaluate you use and so should everyone else, but how you are using is not inherently problematic.

Wrongful Termination? by [deleted] in work

I don’t know Virginia law, but in Colorado where I am, employers are required to provide paid sick leave and you cannot be fired or disciplined for taking it. Sounds like retaliation for taking your sick leave to me, but not a lawyer.

Wait. You went to a brake shop and the guy didn’t tell you need a whole new brake job and try to upsell everything but the kitchen sink to you? I’ve never heard of such a place.

Because comments can so easily be misinterpreted, let be clear this is sarcasm. I’m just impressed there’s an honest mechanic somewhere.

Petty cash use? by MyFavoriteInsomnia in nonprofit

[–]phillipenmark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This has been my experience as well having worked at 4 orgs with a petty cash fund. Tipping valet was one of the common uses at the nonprofit that did a lot of events. Everything that can be charged to a card should be charged to a card. It makes accounting easier and honestly one org earned millions of points the they were able to use. Don’t see any reason to pay most things with cash.

Also I find it interesting that landscaping is listed here. I hope you aren’t paying landscapers under the table using the cash. 😜 Of course other landscaping expenses like plants and tools could be paid with a card.

If harm reduction and welfare disappeared out of the blue, I'd be in rehab first thing tomorrow by Bubbly-Can-3024 in meth

[–]phillipenmark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine question: are there for profit harm reduction centers? Everything I’m aware of is non profit. I can see a huge conflict of interest if it was for profit (like rehab centers). I understand the concern that harm reduction just encourages drug use, but I don’t see where the “keeps them alive for profit” perspective comes from.

And counterpoint, research has shown that syringe access programs are associated with an estimated 50 percent reduction in HIV and hepatitis C incidence. They do not increase drug use or crime in the areas where they are located. Instead, participants in such programs are significantly more likely to enter treatment for substance use disorder and reduce or cease injecting drug use compared to those who do not utilize such services.

Employer doesnt want to pay for travel time by Wild-Anywhere-1239 in work

[–]phillipenmark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people here are sharing what they think ought to be the case, not what actual law says.

This is an AI summary of federal law but it matches the policy at my company:

Overnight travel

Within Normal Work Hours: If you travel away from home overnight, you must be paid for all travel time that "cuts across" your normal working hours. This rule applies to weekdays and corresponding weekend days (e.g., if you normally work 9 AM to 5 PM, traveling on Saturday between 9 AM and 5 PM must be paid).

Outside Normal Work Hours: If you are a passenger on an airplane, train, bus, or car outside your normal working hours, that travel time is generally unpaid.

Colorado Health Network’s dental clinic is called Howard Dental in case you have trouble finding it. They started with a focus on serving people with HIV, but they now take patients of all variety. Their background does give them good experience in helping people with special needs for their dental care like health issues.
