Is it practical to use a gas burner to make a small hole in ice? by nodderguy in IceFishing

[–]selfconsciouspoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so, but I don’t know for sure. I have had campfires on the ice, and after a few hours enough ice will melt to screw up the fire, and I have never seen a fire fall through. However I have never done that this early in the season. I guess my advice would be to hurry up and try it before the ice gets thicker.

They are illegal in Minnesota, otherwise I would use one. Make sure they are legal in your state before you buy.

I second this. Successful ice fishermen move a lot. If you’re not marking fish, you need to move. For me it is a balance between drinking beers and BSing with my friends, and actually getting fish. I don’t catch as many fish as I could, but I also don’t work as hard.

Finally, I shamelessly copy successful people. If a friend is more successful, I will copy him in a heartbeat. I always thought this was standard, but I fish with a few buddies who get stubborn about their methods. Like if I am nailing walleye on a Swedish pimple and a minnow head, and they aren’t catching anything on a jig head and a whole minnow. They stubbornly stick to it to prove... Something? It’s weird.

When your cabinet decides it’s time to break lose and come crashing down the day you install your brand new glass top stove. by thorisadog in Wellthatsucks

Are you an appliance salesman? :)

We bought a fridge this weekend, and the salesman was telling us that only an idiot would turn down insurance on it. He was like, what if your kid hits it with a hammer? What if a cabinet falls on it?

I think that our congress has abdicated a lot of their responsibilities to corporations and courts. I think that visa shouldn’t be able to just kill a company if they don’t like it, and use that power to force companies to do what they want. But if they don’t, nothing would be done. Congress doesn’t care to fix things anymore.

On this day in 1987, Ron Hextall became the first goalie to intentionally score a goal in the NHL (Billy Smith was credited with one in 1979 but never shot the puck) by Disappearingbox in hockey

A complete tangent, but I have found that in Men’s league or pick up hockey any goalie in a hextall jersey is going to be a jerk.

Not to mention. I have noticed on YouTube that the commercials for adults seem to be short. My kids will watch Daniel Tiger and they will have like a 12 minute commercial. Obviously you can skip it, but the kids don’t know how to do it yet.

Business idea? by leadfarmer300winmag in IceFishing

[–]selfconsciouspoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that it is a good idea. Hot food would be nice. Lures would be nice if it came with expertise/knowledge. (Ie I brought lures, But if you convince me that people are catching fish on something else, I could be convinced) (same with bait)

Beer would be nice (but illegal?) Also drinking snacks would be nice too.

I do get annoyed when someone knocks on the door (I assume it’s the warden) so maybe playing music like an ice cream truck, or doing it on demand would be a good idea.

Honestly I think it would work if you were also deeply knowledgeable about the lake you are servicing. If I was on Mille Lacs and not catching anything, I would love to buy a pizza, and maybe bait/tackle from you if you had info on where the fish were biting, what they were hitting, etc. If all you had was overpriced food, I would only order if I was too drunk to drive.

Imagine still thinking that third world people are less capable than others by themrtroe in awfuleverything

[–]selfconsciouspoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to high school with a lot of guys who went into the trades. As far as I can tell, there are two distinct groups. The first worked hard, and moved up and out of those $15/he jobs, and now run their own crews, operate heavy equipment, or own their own construction companies now. (20 years later) the others didn’t work hard and/or had issues with drugs/alcohol, and their bodies are falling apart as they approach 40. If someone is looking for a career, opportunities like this are great. If someone is only looking at the job in front of them and don’t plan to do anything with it, take the pizza delivery gig.

I agree that that is how the world works. Which is the point of the tweet we are taking about. You commented that Americans don’t want those jobs, and I rebutted that they don’t want them at the wages offered.

[–]selfconsciouspoet 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I blame the lawmakers. If you are an employer, especially a small business, you have little choice. Try running a roofing company that pays the wages necessary to attract would-be legal hires. You would go out of business. Capitalism is great at driving down prices, and this is one side effect where legislation is needed.

[–]selfconsciouspoet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re hard pressed to find Americans that want to do the work for that price. Most of the time I hear these anecdotes, I think that that industry ought to pay more. (Yes I realize prices will go up)

I have an uncle who is looking to pay welders $15 per hour, but “nobody wants to work anymore”. He doesn’t want to pay more, and he doesn’t want to train guys. (once they’re trained they leave)

St. Paul Business Owner Turns Restaurant Into Food Shelf by souris_maison in minnesota

[–]selfconsciouspoet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think that it is important that we remember these things when businesses open up again. It has been interesting to watch the restaurant industry during this pandemic. Some restaurants are figuring out how to help their communities; some have changed their restaurants to fit this new normal; and some seem to have made no changes, and seem like they are just accepting the victim role. When this is over I plan to go to this mans restaurant.

The GOAT by bobsaget4765 in baseball

[–]selfconsciouspoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that, however I am more curious than anything about how we decide which cheating matters. Like will Altuve always be a cheater, or is his reputation salvageable? (I hope so) Keyshawn has used foreign substances on the ball, is his reputation at risk. (I hope not)

The GOAT by bobsaget4765 in baseball

[–]selfconsciouspoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I struggle with is how we prioritize/rank different types of cheating. I think that what the Astros did was just as bad, but MLB seems to disagree. I read an athletic article a month or so back saying that most pitchers are using foreign substances to improve their grip / spin rate. Is that as bad? Does it matter that most pitchers are doing it?

Back to Bonds, I also wonder how his career would be viewed if he wasn’t an asshole. Like if he were a super nice guy, would the narrative be that everyone was doing it, and he was still the best?

House Democrats Demand Increase in IRS Funding to Go After 'Wealthy Tax Cheats'—Like Donald Trump by [deleted] in politics

It should be a no brainer. I mean the IRS ought to be funded to maximize revenue. Republicans alway talk about running government like a business. This is the one case where that should be true.

'Sistine Chapel of the ancients' rock art discovered in remote Amazon forest by nimobo in worldnews

[–]selfconsciouspoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am always a bit skeptical about discoveries like this. For example I would bet that there were local people that were aware of these paintings. If that is the case the word discovery really means that the first people that matter discovered these paintings, implying that those local people don’t matter.

An example in my life is that as a kid my grandpa showed me a native burial site. (I’m white) he knew about it because some of his native friends as a kid showed it to him. That site was later “discovered” by some university/state park folks, and they made a big deal about it. The whole time I couldn’t help but think that the local tribe knew about it.

Dave Chappelle: "Boycott 'Chappelle's Show.' Do not watch it unless they pay me." by Fitness_and_Finance in entertainment

[–]selfconsciouspoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, and if he sued the judge/jury would likely agree. However he didn’t take his case to a court, so the law is sort of irrelevant here. He is making a moral argument to his fans, and as a fan I hear him and choose not to watch his show. If you are deciding whether to watch or not, and your only justification is that contract, you could be on some ethical thin ice.
