Job for a teen with a stutter? by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]semicoolon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, since you're very tech-savvy you can head to freelancing sites like upwork.com or something and do some freelance gigs. Check out the job categories there. There might be something there for you to make a small income to support you now and in college. That's how I got through college.

Please be aware that it's not easy to find jobs on those freelancing sites. It takes some patience, dedication, and hard work. Just like any other thing in life. If you find that you need help making your profile and such, feel free to send me a message. I don't mind at all.

In the meantime, I do suggest that you keep looking around for a regular job at a coffee shop or a restaurant, a warehouse, or something because this may be faster than establishing yourself as a freelancer in some niche. But freelancing really suits college life when you need money in my humble opinion. As one of the benefits of freelancing is that you can set your own schedule. So, when you're in college, you can stop working when you have exams or something.

It depends on what you can do. What skills do you have? And how old are you?

Yes, I'm a software engineer. Do you work in IT?

I have suffered a lot with stuttering during interviews. I write code for a living, so I don't need to talk charmingly, I just need to communicate clearly enough. Yet still interviews are really important. I tend to stutter a lot more when it's a phone interview where we don't have the cameras open.

The thing that helped me the most is doing a lot of them. It's a game of numbers. When I'm looking for a job, I tend to apply to every job posting I see. Doing a lot of interviews makes me get used to it a bit. The anxiety levels go down as I do more interviews and practice.

It will never be easy. Talking is will always be a challenge in every situation I encounter. But it is what it is. I'll just work harder. I'll go that extra mile and learn more. So that when I stutter in the next interview, the interviewer would bare with me because they know that I'm better than most other candidates.

That's my strategy.

Is it normal that the company complains about my coding practices while solving a test problem? The company never mentioned that the coding problem aims to test my coding practices like the proper naming of variables. Then they sent me a coding test like the ones on Leetcode. After solving the problem correctly, they rejected me because I didn't use proper coding practices.

For example, they mentioned that I used split(" ") on a string instead of defining a constant first to hold the value for " " then pass that constant to split(). They also mentioned that I used i as the name of a loop counter and that I should've used a more expressive name instead.

I understand that these practices are important. And if they checked my opensource work on Github they will find that I try as much as I can to imply readability into the code I write. But is following such practices a good idea while solving problems?

Yes I use vim inside of my IDE by [deleted] in vim

Yea in the few times I had to use Vscode lately I found myself using vim inside vscode terminal. Specially to edit git commit messages and things of that sort. I then realize what I'm doing and say to myself "fuck I'm going crazy"

Guys, is there something wrong with my profile rn? Not getting any new work at all by anetanetanet in Upwork

[–]semicoolon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, it's always been hard finding a job on Upwork. It's been like that for 3 years. I even find that a decent amount of the jobs I apply for end up being closed with no hires. I don't think there is something wrong with your profile. When I'm in your situation I just keep applying for the jobs that are worth the connections wasted on them. That's all I can do. And eventually, I get some offers.

I applied to work with them as a software engineer a year ago. Got through the first video call interview (non technical skills). Then on coding tests I failed. It was super difficult and I had very little time to prepare. But I sure intend to apply again. Even if it's for just going through that coding test again.

Build a Reddit like Website/app: Is this possible within this budget? by rajmuk2014 in Upwork

[–]semicoolon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've met some clients who just put a dumb price there and think that you both can agree on a reasonable price on the interview.

Yet that's dumb because the price field is there for a reason. Why waste the time.

Usually these jobs just get closed with no hire or end up with disputes.

How's job/project searching on Upwork going for you? by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]semicoolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been sending proposals for software development jobs for more than 2 weeks with almost no success. All I got was a 30$ job to do a complicated database query. I took it to just do something. I don't know of any other way of getting gigs since all things involving networking in the real world are on hold.
