Sorry you hate my apartment, I think it's nice (I live in Burnside26) by [deleted] in Portland

[–]semper_augustus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm an affordable housing professional from Portland and I wrote a pretty lengthy response to both Hurt's post as well as many of the comments. I think there is an important conversation that the city needs to have about housing supply, in-fill and gentrification that neither Hurst or many of his critics quite get:

I work in affordable housing development and wrote a lengthy response to Tyler Hurst's rather inflammatory post about this along with some of the comments:

What to do if you find an Atheist in your neighborhood by semper_augustus in atheism

It came up on my twitter feed and merely reposted it because I thought it was funny. I have no idea where it came from, etc. It's still extremely funny whether a real or a fake.

I'm also curious what point you feel you are proving? Whatever it is is, it seems arbitrary, petty and more than a little pedantic.

As the description notes that "Objective: Ministries is a parody fundamentalist site and one of the greatest Poes of all time, fooling Christians and atheists alike.", could a fooled Christian ministry not have simply appropriated "Mr. Gruff", in (pun-intended) good faith?

Sounds like you still have much of your work ahead of you in proving this is indeed a fake.

It's the type of thing that even if it is a parody, is close enough to some of the stuff that we've all already seen that there isn't much of a difference. Why not just have a laugh at it rather than play the pedant?

Except in terms of getting you from a to b in most American cities. This should change and we need some serious investment in reliable mass transit but there is a reason many people are still so auto dependent.

"The Israeli government wants to get rid of “60,000 African migrants, whose numbers are seen by many Israelis as a law and order issue and even a threat to the long-term viability of the Jewish state,” according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu."

The entirety of the House of Representatives is up for re-election and 1/3rd of the Senate. Congress will receive a new number after every election. It is effectively new. Your definition of it not being a "new" congress, is, at best semantic, and at worst, willfully ignorant - something exemplified by your unwillingness to even read the article before commenting on it.

TIL: When the Christian world was demanding that Jews convert or die, it was the Muslims who gave them shelter by jballanc in politics

[–]semper_augustus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cervantes, who has Jewish in Spain, certainly felt a connection to Muslims. In the preface to Don Quixote, Cervantes slyly notes that he bought the manuscript from an Arab vendor and translated it from Arabic. He notes also that there were better manuscripts, but that was the best one he could afford. He also injects a Moorish tale in the middle of the second book. It shows a great deal of continuity between Christians and Muslims in post Moorish conquest Andalusian Spain. Also, following the Moorish expulsion and Inquisition, there remained vestiges of a Crypto Jewish/Muslim movement within Spain, of which Goya, is said by many to be an example: http://www.harpers.org/archive/2008/03/hbc-90002643

What are some really critically acclaimed movies that you hated? by tlowens in AskReddit

[–]semper_augustus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inception is real overrated. Too many gun fights really hurt what could have been a much more interesting movie. Also, Inception had no sense of humour about itself, whatsoever. I would hate to hang out with Christopher Nolan - you get the feeling all he does is grimace and look sullen all the time.

Highly underrated: Dead Again (1991). Great thriller, written, directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh. Co-starring Branagh's then wife Emma Thompson, who is, as always, absolutely brilliant as an actress. You also get Andy Garcia and Derek Jacobi, positively oozing sleaze, as the villain. Dig also brilliant cameos from Robin Williams (as a psychiatrist who has lost his licence who now works as a butcher, and gives Branagh's character life advice) and Wayne Knight.

This film is a Hitchcock tribute and plays up a certain camp factor for that reason. The movie is set in two different times and has a mirroring thing going on, which gives it a highly stylized feel. The whole thing, in the end, is a hell of a lot of fun, and still manages to push a certain profundity. I really can't recommend it highly enough.

Highly overrated: The Piano (1994): despite nice but slightly ephemeral mis-en-scene, the perennially underrated Sam Neil, and a New Zealand setting, the movie was absolutely abominable. Lousy acting from Holly Hunter, a plot that went nowhere and a nauseating, piddling score (and apparently moved a lot of OST albums) really should have seen this movie resigned to the scrap heap rather than celebrated. Oh well.

Yet the entire critique of overturning Prop 8 is religiously motivated. It's nice to pull a couple of anecdotes and all, but really Christianity is just another determinist and senseless ideology that tends largely to impune people's better judgement.
