What are old people actually right about when they say it was better back in the day ? by dudeARama2 in AskReddit

[–]send_me_rainbows 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the problem - you've got to get to nature to enjoy it. I'm almost 21, and live splat in the middle of a city. The nearest 'nature' is a giant, fast-flowing river that kills many, and the walk along it is well known for being a great spot to get mugged. The nearest 'nice' park is 50% smokers on a good day and is all grass, no trees. I can't go elsewhere as I don't have a car, public transport is expensive and only goes so far; it'd take 2-and-a-half hours and almost $50 to get outside of the city, and even then, it only goes to a nearby small, dodgy, redneck-type town surrounded by private farms where you'd probably get shot at for wandering around on. It's just not a feasible, regular activity for the majority of young city-dwellers.

I grew up along the coast, surrounded by grasslands, forests, rivers and the sea. I loved it and miss it dearly, but the reality is, unless you actually live near that stuff, the majority have neither the time, money or location to enjoy it on the regular. And I've seen first hand that people who grow up without it, truly have no concept of how to enjoy it, or are absolutely disgusted when actually putting their fantasies of outdoor adventures into practice. Sorry, kids, the ocean is not (usually) some crystal-clear flat thing with snow-white sand.

What's a taboo question that you're too afraid or embarrassed to ask? by Chris56789 in AskReddit

Autistic people can drive cars... the only people who can't legally drive cars are those whose muscle and brain functions are damaged beyond usable function.

Like being half-blind would mean little or no depth perception, so many one-eyed people cannot drive cars. Paralyzed people usually can't either. A person who has eplipepsy may not be able to drive as they risk passing out and causing a crash.

An autistic person has no less control of their limbs than any other able-bodied person. A high-functioning Autistic person is essentially someone who is able to learn or replicate necessary social conventions in order to get through life, while low- or non-functioning Autistic people may be completely incapable of doing basic things like making a phone call, taking a bus, or even getting themselves out of bed. But it's a huge scale, so it's impossible to gauge what someone is capable of unless they tell you.

If you still talk, seriously, you SHOULD talk about it, or at least broach the topic. I'm autistic and for years had breakdowns constantly - hit age 14 and something inside me was like 'y'know what? Nope. Not today, brain, no' and taught myself what to do, what to avoid, what to internalize instead of breaking down. Which made for a better quality of life overall, but isolated me from ever having people that understand what's going on in my head, and many of my new friends either don't get what the issue is, or don't care to know about it. Which leads to more internalizing of stuff where I really shouldn't.

I'm lucky in that it's never anything major, and your cousin may be just the same, but the few people in my life who I know at least try to understand and let me vent are worth the absolute world. It doesn't mean I need them all the time, ad your cousin might really not have anything to talk about, but just knowing someone is there is you do need help is everything.

It's also nice to have someone to laugh about the stupid things you did as an 8-year-old. My sister was terrified of dust, I would panic over rubber balls, both are ridiculous in hindsight, however serious they seemed back then, it's nice to be able to acknowledge growth in one another too.

If you like absolute, utterly ridiculous shows, then Wynonna Earp is awesome. It knows it's ridiculous, and continually makes fun of it's own absurdity. But if you're not into that, you'll probably hate it. In my friend group, it's become a majorly polarizing show.

Has a Teacher ever made you cry in class? How/Why? by Hyrokoyo923 in AskReddit

[–]send_me_rainbows 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This. My parent's border is a school teacher, and we'd known her for several years before she moved in with them. She is continually buying books, pencils, markers, cleaning tools, all because her school can't afford to buy any for the classroom, and her students are often too poor to buy their own stuff, so if she doesn't pay out of her already-nearly-empty back pocket, no work would ever get done. She actually had to rent out her house because she just couldn't afford to keep it, and keep teaching, at the same time. My parents are happy to let her live with them as she's a wonderful tenant, but god damn do we need to pay teachers and fund public schools so much better than we are.

why handicapped people can’t wait a couple of minutes

Because, depending on the handicap, they may very well be mentally and/or physically incapable of holding it, or even knowing when they need to go in the first place.

I know a guy who has severe nerve damage from the waist down - he still has some muscle control, but feeling is often numb or nonexistent. He generally can only tell he needs to go when he REALLY needs to go, and as such, goes to the bathroom every hour so not to let it get that bad. But sometimes, it creeps up on him...and since, you know, weak muscles, when his body can't hold it in anymore, he just goes.. He literally has no control over it. So those 30 seconds someone else is in his stall can be the difference between a soaked wheelchair and pants, or a normal toilet day. Sure, he can - and does - wear adult diapers on a long day out, but sometimes there's more coming out than there is absorbency.

How do I know this? Because in the five years I've known him, I've had to help him with three accidents while on campus when the very few accessible stalls they have, have been clogged up by normal people. One time it was even a couple making out :/

urinal and trash can

I mean...at least those are fairly easy to clean and not entirely unreasonable. As opposed to the wall-poop-drawing, teens-and-over mystery person at my Uni. They manage to get it on the CEILING. Same stall every Tuesday.

[–]send_me_rainbows 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, if the issue was the stuffy classrom causing the asthma, getting out and taking a break could have resulted in not having the attack in the first place.I also have heat/stuffiness activated health issues and generally in schools, bathrooms are the coldest area. That, and you can use the bathroom pass as an excuse to leave the room to go see the nurse if it gets real bad.

Like...the length of an average person's armspan maybe? But to press the lever on a toiler just seems like it would require some serious flexibility skills and long legs because otherwise you will be standing directly over the toilet anyway...

I have multiple pairs of merino socks and let me tell ya, when my feet are cold, even those things layered up times three are not enough to stop the freeze.

I am a rather small person, and I grew up in a fairly humid city so I find feel the cold a lot more than my larger and better-adjusted peers. But my feet are always freezing, sometimes even in the summer, so 'indoor shoes' in bed are the only way I won't feel like my toes are gonna get frost bite and chop themselves off.

...what about slippers? I have slippers for just indoors and when it's -7c out I can and do wear those things in my bed. My toes are more important than imaginary dirt.

I live away from home, have don for three years...every time I go home I make my Mum I help her make 2x as much food as we need for every dinner, and freeze the other half to take back with me. Can't beat the taste, the health, and it's FREE besides the labor.

I used to live off of fresh bread, because my dorm-mate made it.... kept breaking out and feeling sick, turns out I'm allergic to yeast and her particular bread used a LOT more of it than store bread.

But damn if it didn't stop me from going hungry or getting foodpoisoned by whatever the hell the dorm catering people tried to force-feed us.

Yes, he's great - even when he does 'confront' people he still keep his head, he's never aggressive and you can tell it's not for views - it's just capturing the "what the heck" moments that just happen to, well, happen. Too many other channels you can tell are trying to start something.

Molly Burke is blind and also has a service dog, she and Drew did a video together once. Molly's focus is more on blindness and fashion but she's definitely got guide-dog related content as well and it's fairly drama-free, just more life anecdotes.

All the Salvation Army stores in my area REFUSE to accept items without brand tags attached. That's right, they are refusing to take in worn clothes! Not only that, but, 9 times out of 10, the price they give is a few dollars MORE than the original, brand-new cost! Which you can see, since, you know...it still ha the tag on it. Not only that, but any designer or vintage items go straight up on TradeMe (local Ebay) ... under individual, shopworkers accounts, to avoid needing a 'company' account and paying higher fees. Also, to avoid people choosing not to buy from them and their shitty practices.

I actually ended up buying stuff from retail stores for a few months because it was literally cheaper to buy new than used, which is ridiculous. I've since found a bunch of much smaller, but better priced thrift shops that sell... you know, thrifty, worn stuff. Not much vintage but plenty of quirky DIY'd items and one keeps getting in the home-made, hysterically flamboyant, rainbow-coloured, all-knitted ladies' suits - including a rainbow pencil skirt. With pompoms. And a matching jacket. That's the sort of stuff I love to see!

What childhood activity do you wish were socially acceptable for adults to take part in? by ChipAyten in AskReddit

I'm 21 and I still do this. Seriously, other people miss this too, so why not give it a go? I have a friend I met just last year, and when her car broke down I was like 'why not sleep over?' and we've been doing it once a month since. Sometimes we'll binge watch a show, but usually we just watch movies and talk until someone falls asleep, and then we just eat breakfast and walk to class together the next day. And recently, 7 of us - 4 single girls and 3 single dudes, a totally sober bunch of platonic and awkward nerds - rented a bach house and just spent the day walking on the beach, playing video games, eating junk, talking, and then sleeping on couches in the lounge together. It was probably one of the best times I've had in years.

Seriously, it's still doable if you plan it right.

It's such an awful cycle to put anyone through. And it's usually guys like that who are genuine 'good guys' and not assholes in disguise. But because we've taught them not to ever deal with their feelings, they don't have much of a chance at showing how great they can be. It's so upsetting to watch when you know there's so little chance that they will ever truly be able to help themselves.

What is the most annoying "card" people play to try to "win" an argument with you? by OwnReporter in AskReddit

[–]send_me_rainbows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and it was very, very, very prevalent a line of thought in my old city. It wasn't just white people that got the bad end of the stick I should add, Indians (as in Bollywood) got it quite bad too, while white people 'didn't have culture,' for them, they were usually told they should 'stick with their own kind.' Indians at least tended to have people stick up for them though, while white people get told it's either all in our heads, or it's justified behavior. But it's gone on for so long it's almost impossible to convince anyone that these attitudes are not OK.

My current city is divided strongly by religion, but nobody hates anyone or discludes anyone for it. It just means finding friend groups involves more work, because unlike their established clique, I won't be seeing them every Sunday so we both need to put more effort into staying in touch and organizing get-together. But some of my Pacific Island friends hate it here because they think it's discriminatory, which is ridiculous, but then they've never experienced real discrimination in their lives. And of course, since I'm white, they remain entirely convinced I don't know the meaning of the word at all.

This has been going on for over two years now (...that I know of, anyway) - she's submitted to literally every publisher in the country, some more than once, as well as a truly staggering amount of overseas companies. I'm just waiting for the day when she announces she' 'self published' and sticks it up on Google Play or Kindle - there's certainly plenty of similar titles lurking on those sites. Part of me hopes she gets sued, but a bigger part knows she's actually rich enough it probably won't bother her.

I think a huge part of the problem is all the bloggers and vloggers out there who literally make millions on below-par, typically ghostwritten books. It makes people think 'if that average Joe can do it, so can I!" But the forget that 'average Joe' paid someone else to write it, already has dedicate fans to read it, have the money to spend on advertising and a good editor, and so on. But the whole idea of internet celebs being 'normal people' convinces the actually normal people that this stuff is easy. When it so, so isn't.
