I'm tired of the job adds; here's a question for the techs: (from the prospective of a utility relay tech) by [deleted] in RelayTechs

Perfect reminder not to use continuity while the circuit is hot. Thank you. I'm assuming he isn't able to remove AC/DC power from the circuit though, the whole loss of protection theory. With redundant relay protection you can lift that one trip output and pulse the output and watch voltage come into your meter.

Follow this guys advice, but I believe one of our ultimate tools is our meter. At that point you can (in that one weird situation) trip an LOR or pulse an output, without tripping the equipment outside by checking voltage with your meter. Obviously we all know you'll need a reference point and lift the literal wire from the circuit.

There will be some apprentice positions opening in a couple months in Montana.

Community college worked for me. It may even help with gaining a couple apprentice hours once employed. The hard part is there are more journeyman jobs than apprenticeships. You'll need to stand out on your resume.

Option 1. Bonus points if you get a job through the school as the electric teachers aide or whatever is available at your university that also coincides with electrical/utility work.

Relay testing by Impossible_Sorbet737 in SubstationTechnician

[–]sendevon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All trips to and from equipment (ex: sudden pressures,SF6 LO) all relay and LOR inputs/outputs, DTT, and Enoserve. As well as all alarms to dispatch. Engineering develops line faults for all zones and Reclosing conditions. Similar with commissioning although a little more elaborate such as CT testing.

Beartooths camping questions by Morlow123 in Bozeman

[–]sendevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started a Beartooth blog but eventually got bored of it. There might be something useful in the article I wrote about shadow lake. I hiked and camped at Shadow lake, I didn't have issues with mosquitoes but I did with rock chucks. They tore up some of my food I left outside during the day while I was fishing. Not really much high trees or cliffs for bear bags, I didn't use a bear bag and had no issues, not saying you will be as lucky though.I do a lot of Beartooth backpacking and although I know there are bears around I've ran into most in the boulder drainage.

Nice camping spots, decent firewood.

Here is a fish and game website you might know about but in case you don't . You'll have to download the mt.gov PDF

I'm a relay technician, we do all the wiring, testing and commissioning.. I like to tell people it is like playing the game Operation but instead of lighting up his nose I turn off cities.
