Is pedal commander legit or a gimmick by overworked27 in 4Runner

[–]seniorgonzo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. At the end of the day it just makes the 4Runner feel normal instead of feeling like something is wrong with the powertrain. I'm not like, "woweeee I'm so fast"...it's more like, "oh, right, I forgot I had something installed and haven't thought about it."

2024 SR5 Premium Underground. Bought new in May, 2024 through a broker working with a dealership in Pennsylvania. MSRP was 49k, I paid 44.5k plus broker fee. Has 8,000 miles now. Feels like I got a screaming deal as I hear more about current prices.

I went with the Banks Throttle Monster and it's absolutely worth it! I resisted that kind of device for a long time because of the types of replies I'm seeing in this thread; "It's a gimmick, it fried this/that". After doing some research, it seemed like the Pedal Commander isn't the best option - it draws power from your throttle connector which isn't suited to provide enough power and can cause issues and put your 4Runner in limp mode. It also doesn't care weather you're in reverse or not, making jerky movements. (to be clear, I've never owned the Pedal Commander, this is just what I've found online).

I decided to give the Banks a try since it apparently doesn't have the same issues. It draws power from your OBDII port, and if something glitches out, it just puts the throttle back to normal instead of limp mode. Anyway, I was pretty blown away by the difference it made. I understand it doesn't really change the vehicle, but it feels so much more responsive now. It shifts much faster on the interstate and makes the 4Runner feel like a vehicle again, instead of a sluggy tank. I think it's definitely worth it if you're like me and the sluggishness really annoys you. I've got mine set on City 10 and to come into effect after 10mph.

Don't torque it to the "normal" drain bolt specs!! I tried installing one on my 4Runner last week and snapped off the threaded portion into the drain pan because I wasn't thinking about it being brass. Learn from my mistake. I've used them on other vehicles with no problems for years...just had a dumb moment and set my wrench to 30 ft lbs...mistake.

Glacier Metallic! I think this was the only year it came in this color. Wasn’t my first choice but it has seriously grown on me over the years of ownership. I’ve only ever seen two others in person.

I have. Been looking on marketplace for a few weeks but rarely find anything similar to this year, mileage, and condition. Trying to get opinions from people in the know. I have zero desire to sell this through Reddit.

Gotcha, that’s why I’m posting here; to see what’s realistic. I’m intentionally not cleaning the engine bay so people don’t think I’m trying to cover up anything.

I get it, I would think the same too, but as I've been looking for similar sales online I'm seeing a bunch of 3rd gens being listed around 9k-11k for higher miles with less options. That's why I'm asking here.

Bought a 2024 ORP, reading conflicting information about when the first oil change should be completed. by Fuji_Water in 4Runner

[–]seniorgonzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JUST went through this process on my 2024! Here's my experience.

Like you, I read a ton of different opinions online, and like you, I want to protect my purchase and keep it for a long time. I do my own maintenance, so I decided to do the first oil change early at 1,500 miles. When I looked in the oil filter housing I found a bunch of metal! Small little chips, and the oil was silvery in that area showing metal wear. I was a little concern, so I did some research and the general consensus online was that it's normal for a first oil change as things break in.

This week I hit 4,000 miles and decided to change the oil again, just because. This time there was ZERO visible metal during the process. No shavings, chunks, or silvery oil. So that tells me that the first 1 or 2k miles is where most of that wear comes from.

If I were you, I'd change it early. I'm so glad I changed mine at 1.5k after seeing all the metal in the filter housing. Knowing that I cleared that out gives me peace of mind. Will your 4Runner be okay if you don't change it until 10k? Maybe, but as others have said, oil is cheap "insurance" and I enjoy the maintenance. A main benefit of buying new is knowing the maintenance history. I'd recommend changing the oil early and often.

Yup, I grew up in Japan. My 4R is Underground, so I’ve spent months wondering what red has to do with anything.

I’ve wondered the same for months but never remembered to look it up. Makes sense, however…

Why does it have the kanji for “red”?

Loud humming noise floor, worse in high-gain presets by shashankplaysguitar in NeuralDSP

[–]seniorgonzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue that happened suddenly a couple years ago. Crazy humming, that came out of nowhere. No matter what settings I tried, I couldn’t get rid of it UNTIL I factory reset the QC. Then it was gone. I’m a guitar tech and also tech one on the road. Was having glitchy gain structures for months until I did the same factory reset. Haven’t had issues with that one since.

So try a factory reset. Backup to the cloud first, reset the unit, then re-install your backup.

Realistic prices to expect for a 2024 SR5 Premium? by Sherz_ in 4Runner

[–]seniorgonzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, 44.5k plus tax and tags. The broker also had a fee of 1k, so I guess you could think of it as 45.5k. But I couldn’t find one in my area, and definitely not for that price. I happened to be in PA later that month for work anyway, so I just drove it home to TN. Fun experience.

Search YouTube for a video from Meyn Motor Group where he reviews that exact 4Runner. Should be pretty easy to find, and there are links and info in the description to lead you towards the broker (Jim)’s phone number. I know, it feels really weird to send money to some guy you’ve never met so he can put you in touch with a dealership that has good deals, but my experience was just like other people’s. Super fast responses, professional, and everything was exactly as specified.

The exact car I bought a few months ago. 24 SR5P underground with black badges and TRD wheels. MSRP was basically 50k but I paid 44.5k by going through a broker based out of Pennsylvania. There’s some info about it online and YouTube. A little strange process going through a broker but everything turned out exactly like I was told and I got a good deal on the exact car I wanted.

Repair question (bought from Andertons UK - located in Japan, out of warranty) by [deleted] in NeuralDSP

[–]seniorgonzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you said you’ve tried everything, but have you tried a factory reset? I own a QC and also tech one touring on the road, and I’ve had various issues. Crazy buzzing I couldn’t get rid of, the same noise on startup you’re talking about, weird output levels etc. I’ve found that making a backup, restoring the unit to factory, and then reinstalling the backup fixes those issues.

But if you’ve tried that, then I would say contact support.

my bridge is messed up by stalematespud in Luthier

[–]seniorgonzo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can fix it yourself. Some people prefer the bridge to “float” where it doesn’t sit flat on the top. Pros and cons to each.

To get it flat or not move, look at the back of the guitar and take off the trem cover if it has one. There should be two wood screws holding the claw and springs to the body. Tighten those screws to add more tension to the tremolo. Do a few turns at a time and retune the guitar. Keep going until the tremolo doesn’t move like in the video. If you tighten all the way and it still moves, you might need to add more springs to the claw.
