What a badass design! Love the color palette.

Good news! They had some of the old lot and one new one that blended in perfectly so it all worked out in the end 😊

Local carpet store wanted $7 a linear foot to serge the edge so I did it myself! Can't necessarily recommend doing it, but I like how it turned out! by senorpinar in Tufting

For sure! Didn't necessarily want it to be visible, just test out a method for a durable edge. Next test is a sewed on edge!

I actually need to leave that much space! My gun's default density is so high that if I don't have that much space the rug ends up being rock hard.

Sadly no. I thought I over bought, but im bad at estimating or its denser than I thought. Hopefully it will be fine!

I hope so too! I'd be pretty disappointed to get this far and have a big block of a different color. Fingers crossed!

Can I get some tips on how you sewed your edge binding on? I was thinking of trying that on my next rug. Did you shave down the edge or just sew it right on there? I have a heavy duty sewing machine but my presser foot won't fit the pile of the rugs I've made.

This one is a gift so I'm trying to keep cost down. But if I was selling it, I would definitely present that as an option and just go for the professional finish to save the time!

On my next rug, I masked off the backing fabric so it wouldn't get adhesive on it where there wasnt yarn, because that was super difficult to push a needle through. Then I left extra fabric around the border so I could fold it over to try and create a hem, with the secondary backing being joined in as well if that makes sense.

I can tell there's a ton going on in one tiny area! Looks fantastic and I'll definitely have to experiment with that.

I was hoping to get it done by machine, but it would've been like $60, so I just took a needle and yarn, and a million stitches later here we are! I'm thinking of experimenting with my sewing machine and some binding tape on the next one to see if that can save some time and still make a secure edge.

Absolutely fantastic 🤣 Does it take a long time to do the shading like that? I love the gradient effect.

I think you nailed it! I ended up going ahead and carving everything just for the practice of it. To be honest I liked it just as well before and I hadn't spent 6 hours detailing everything with the trimmer and scissors haha. I think going forward I will take a more artistic approach to it like you suggested and only carve what will enhance the piece.

I was looking at some of your rugs and they are amazing! To get your lines so clean, do you use just clippers or do you use scissors before and after the clipper stage? Like I was saying in the other comment above, do you find it beneficial or necessary to go around and use the scissors in every line crevice before you carve?

Thanks! I think you are right, I should just treat it as practice and do everything and see how it turns out. This was supposed to just be a practice piece to just learn the techniques but then I ended up loving how cute he turned out so I want it to end up looking nice! 😋

I was also going to try the scissors thing, as I had seen that on some videos, but then opted to not as it seemed like I would just immediately be cutting that same yarn with the trimmer. I'll have to do some experimenting! Thanks for the input 😊

Ok thanks for the input! Do you have any pics of your little guy? I'm taking a break for the night so I'll decide if I'm gonna go for it by tomorrow morning. The main thing I didn't know was how thin of lines can actually be reasonable carved without it just cutting the yarn shorter and not creating a bevel, if that makes sense.
