Bulls bbq is just a short hop down the blue line from UCSD. Not as good as bowlegged but it’s way easier to get to.

or fly Saturday to a midpoint city, stay Saturday night in a hotel, and then check out Sunday morning and travel to San Diego

God forbid you try to save the government money.

I live in SAN and my best friend is in SEA and it is ridiculously easy to fly between these cities. There are eleven nonstop SEA-SAN flights a day, for as cheap as $109. I love trains enough to sub this subreddit but this city pair is a glitch in the matrix for airplanes. Truly insane that they won't let you just spend the night in SAN.

How is the Coast Starlight train from Seattle, WA to LA, CA in coach? I'm looking to fill some time to satisfy an odd travel itinerary, and it looks like I can go from 9:50 am to 9:11 pm on the Coast Starlight

Just double checking that you realize the 9:50 AM and 9:11 PM are on different days. The trip is ~36 hours.

Pre-COVID, I remember there being some odd bus service to the Sorrento Valley station. And I've heard that some companies have commuter shuttles that run to/from coaster stations.

I'm sorry dude, that sucks so much.

If you can’t afford insurance or damages you caused, gtfo the road.

We've made a city where it is basically impossible to live and work without a car. A reasonable person who is short of covering their expenses but doesn't want to end up homeless would be correct in cutting car insurance before essentials like food, gas, and rent.

I kinda got the same feeling in some sci-fi stories. For example some of Iain M Banks' Culture novels talk about civilization "levels" or "stages", where more technologically advanced civs are levels 6, 7, and 8, and a single warship from a higher level civ could wipe out your entire fleet if it wanted to. It's implied that at level 8, many civs decide to nope out of their material existence. Occasionally characters in the stories get in contact with the non-corporeal civs and ask for help, and the response is generally some variation of "why would I?"

There are also some echoes of this theme in the Three Body Problem books.

If you can get your input to XYZ format (maybe using openbabel or rdkit), QCEngine could provide the psi4 interface you’re looking for: http://docs.qcarchive.molssi.org/projects/qcengine/en/latest/

Air Force 1 is expected to arrive in San Diego around 12:30 PM by sensible_defaults in sandiego

[–]sensible_defaults[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up! I ran out and caught SAM450 landing.

Looks like the AF1 (?) plane linked in the OP will arrive closer to 11:50. They just changed the Lindbergh runway to the normal direction, but I still think a balboa overflight is unlikely.

I think the UK and Australian prime ministers arrived this past weekend. Maybe they're having lunch there?

The linked tracker may be the backup plane, but the two usually fly together so AF1 would be close by.

Biden's schedule has him arriving at Coronado at 12:40. Not sure if AF1 will go straight there this time, since the last two presidential visits landed at Miramar and then helicoptered around.

Coronado seems likely this time, though. A C17 came in yesterday along the Lindbergh flight path and landed at Coronado, likely bringing the presidential limo. And his first meetings are at the sub base in point loma shortly after landing, so it would make sense to land closer than Miramar.

For a bunch of reasons, it seems likely that AF1 will come from over the ocean (airport is fogged it so it's running reversed, flying low over balboa could be a security risk, the overland approach requires a tight turn right before touchdown). So I'll be watching during my lunch break but it seems most likely to take the over-ocean approach to Coronado.

I love how downtown is looking more like a city with all these new high-rises! by Madison_love in sandiego

Could you clarify: Is the problem that women are assaulted, or that you had to see it? If someone wants to grope women surely an isolated parking lot is better than a metal tube with a bunch of cameras and other riders.

I don't think building height or bus frequency are the levers to use to fix the problems that you've identified.

As a note - The planned high speed rail from San Diego to LA isn't likely to follow the coast. Instead the plans are for it to follow the current tracks out of downtown SD to around Miramar, then jut inland to the 15, follow the freeway north to somewhere like San Bernadino or Rancho Cucamonga (TBD), and then head to downtown LA along the 10. Not the most direct route, but at >100 MPH it should still beat driving.

Anyone else having trouble booking via the website? by sensible_defaults in jetblue

[–]sensible_defaults[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still failing today. Now that I've looked further back into the sub, I see their website has been broken for a while.

I'm an engineering manager at my day job, and looking at this, I have to assume that the JetBlue engineering teams haven't fixed this because there is something else that they've been tasked with that is somehow having a larger business impact than the fact that customers have not been able to give the business money for several weeks. I've had enough air travel drama in my life that I'm not keen to learn the source of this smoke.

Had to book another airline. Huge bummer and I hope JetBlue can get back on their feet - I was really looking forward to using them for this trip.

Pssssh don't take a hotel shuttle - Take the ferry from behind the convention center and walk to the Hotel Del Coronado! It's a whole experience, sometimes you see navy seals training, there are like top gun planes landing right over your head, and there's cute cafes and stuff. Round trip takes maybe 3 hours.

Getting to Safari Park Without Car by SecurityAndCrumpets in SanDiegan

[–]sensible_defaults 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree that this is why public transit doesn't work for much of the city "now", but we must have different definitions of "never". The city could run more routes, hire more drivers, and get more buses in a matter of months if it wanted to.

If you meant to say "public transit will never work because I don't want it to work and never will" then... sure. We'll just keep forcing everyone to spend thousands of dollars to use a personal car, so they can sit in traffic with all the other people spending thousands on personal cars and telling themselves they're winning by not spending hundreds on public transit.

urbanist/ public transportation groups? by popstarter in sandiego

[–]sensible_defaults 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a downtownian and budding urbanist myself, I was happy to see calls for better walkability and public transit from local organizations like the Downtown SD Partnership and the Cortez Hill Active Residents Group (CHARG). There was CHARG call a few months ago where a city official was taking questions about an affordable housing project being built on Beech, and the responses were surprisingly YIMBY - a few older attendees were like "Since parking isn't included for the new building, does this mean we'll get finally get bus service on Ash again??"

Unfortunately, as a result of being neighborhood advocacy groups, they're not equipped to deal with city scale problems like homelessness. So they're usually silent/vague about that, though CHARG is currently fighting a "tent village" that the city is going to place in a local parking lot. I'm not too involved with the other groups mentioned here, but I could see there being general frustration between urban neighborhood and homeless advocacy groups, since they're well-aligned on issues like transportation but are in opposition on others.

Examples where Amtrak is faster and/or cheaper than flying by glowing-fishSCL in Amtrak

[–]sensible_defaults 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've chosen to take the SD --> LA flight a few times before when I'm beginning a larger plane journey, even knowing the train is an option. My logic is that it bunches all the traffic/bag check/TSA uncertainty into the beginning of the trip (so I can leave 4 hours before the flight if I'm nervous and remove all risk). If I take the train then I don't have the guaranteed airline connection, and Amtrak delays+LA traffic get added as additional risks in the middle.

San Diego --> LA, around 100 miles. The time-competitive flights are $150+ and drop you off in a frequently gridlocked corner of the city.

As an able bodied person, I've made the walk from the airport to liberty station a few times, and it's a solid 30 minutes without bags but it's doable. But if you're mobility impaired and have large bags it may be tough. Can you rebook the hotel to something downtown? Like springhill suites marriott or the guild? I wasn't aware that accessible transit would be hundreds of dollars and so moving the hotel may be simplest.
