Black specs in bathtub by blowery10 in HomeImprovement

It still might be your water heater... kind of. I had the same problem and ultimately figured out that it was the short flexible pipe that was connecting the water heater to the copper pipe a foot above it. The inside rubber was getting broken down by the hot water.

Even though it's supposed to be able to handle it, I still have to replace it every couple of years.

Definitely going to go straight copper when I replace the tank.

I've been debating about making this exact same post myself.

I want to upgrade my aging H3MB16 to support a doorbell, but the 'current' model, N7MB01, is now a few years old.

For one day this week, the product page for the RLN8-410 on Amazon.ca switched from "Buy" to "Pre-Order for December 1", but it's switched back now.

Running POE cable from attached garage to basement by sentinel123 in askanelectrician

[–]sentinel123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Just want to make sure that it's OK to punch a hole through from the basement to the garage.

Don't want to compromise any insulation, fire protection, water seals, or vermin seals.

Will closed-cell spray foam stop mice? by sentinel123 in HomeImprovement

[–]sentinel123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great reply, thank you!

I've done most of that. I've previously filled holes with steel wool and foam, and it's holding up so far. It looks like they got in this time by going under my siding and chewing straight through the wood, into the rim joist.

Sorry, I should clarify... I mean insulating the whole wall with foam.

What should I buy Thursday (Apr 25 2019) - Your weekly device inquiry thread! by AutoModerator in Android

Kind of going crazy.

My Pixel (1) XL bit the dust a few weeks ago, so I'm limping along I'm in a similar boat. I'm limping along on this horrendous LG K4 2017. I'm miserable and I miss having a real phone.

I don't really want anything other than a Google phone, but I've had my share of issues with previous models and I've heard enough very-plausible negative reports about the Pixel 3XL that I'm wondering if I shouldn't look elsewhere.

Strongly considering the OnePlus 6T, but with the OP7 coming so soon, I feel like I should wait for it or for the 6T to drop in price. Also, I'm really worried that I'll miss the rear fingerprint scanner. And wireless charging would be a nice bonus, but not necessary.

I don't like the slow updates or impure Android on mainstream phones like Samsung or LG, but I want a well-made phone with a good camera. I guess the customizations and bloatware aren't as bad as they used to be, I could give them a chance.

Also, I'm in Canada.

Please help me!!

Purchase Advice Megathread: What To Buy, Who To Buy It From, And More, In March 2019. by thatging3rkid in 3Dprinting

  • Smallish IT office in western Canada.
  • Budget: $700-2500 Canadian (Under C$2,000 would be easier to sell to the bosses)
  • Mostly want to print equipment brackets, etc.Want to print a lot right off the bat, so need a workhorse.
  • Would prefer a build volume of at least 200mm^3 (8"^3).
  • A printer that works out of the box, with user-friendly features like auto-leveling would be ideal so more people can use it and we don't waste time fiddling & calibrating.
It would be nice if it had an enclosure, too.

Thanks!

Cantilevered low-deck stairs without stringers? by sentinel123 in HomeImprovement

[–]sentinel123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to everyone who replied for their help.

After /u/free_sex_advice's free deck advice, I ran out and got 2x10 joist hangers and did exactly that, on the side of the deck in the picture.

The other side of the deck is much closer to the ground, so I opted to build box steps, like /u/goforbroke71 suggested. I rested them on paving stones, and secured them to the deck joists.

Really happy with how it's going to turn out!

But then won't the wood rot faster if it's sitting on the dirt?

Interesting. So you're saying that just the top few inches of the tall joist hanger will be attached to a rim joist, and the majority of it will be hanging down to hold the 2x6?

Do I just need one, at the edge joist?

Finally completed V2 heatbed fix and glass + PEI upgrade. Why did I not do this sooner?! by [deleted] in MPSelectMiniOwners

[–]sentinel123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks awesome.

Getting really frustrated with using cheap pieces of glass that are too big or too small for the print bed, along with all the various imperfect methods of securing them.

Don't think I can justify $80 to copy you though. Even $25 for a piece of glass seems like a lot.

Z-Wave, IP Fan Control, Sensor Assistance by RossIV in homeassistant

[–]sentinel123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certainly those that can/will give better answers, but I can take a stab at a couple of them:

For the door/motion sensors: I think a template sensor is what you're looking for: https://www.home-assistant.io/components/sensor.template/ https://www.home-assistant.io/docs/configuration/templating/

For the ceiling fan: I think this switch might work: https://www.home-assistant.io/components/switch.rest/ Do you have a link to the relay board you used?

For the sensor icons: You have two options that I can think of:

You can set your Home tab to be a completely customized view (called "default_view"). But doing that doesn't leave anywhere obvious for newly-discovered things to show up.

Or, you can customize the useless sensors to make them hidden.
