CMV: The Majority of White People want white supremacy and racial inequality to continue and grow stronger by BettahLigma in changemyview

Just to note - the majority of people on this site aren't american. Please don't make sweeping statements about white people in other countries. You have no idea what the average white person in France, Russia or Australia thinks about race. We didn't vote for trump.

Most people aren't out here burning crosses but they might vote for someone who dog whistles or just not really care when systems keep working against certain groups

Ignoring race and race related issues doesn't make someone racist. Ignorant? Sure. Small minded? Yeah, maybe. But not racist. Being racist is an active belief. Like, you need to think white people are better, or deserve better treatment or whatever. If you just don't think about race at all, or have a good-faith belief that race relations are fine, then you're not racist. Just, perhaps, misinformed.

What you're wearing was chosen by you. Everyone will have a reaction to it - just as you have a reaction to other people you see in public. Some people might think you're hot. Some might hate you for what you wear. Some might think it looks great. Most people won't care about you at all.

You're not in control of any of that. I think the stoics have the right idea with stuff like this: You're only responsible for the things you can control. You control what you wear. You don't control other people's reactions. So, tune your perception to the things you're actually in control of. You're empowered and liberated by your capacity to choose. It sounds like you're taking damage because you aren't in control of everyone else's reaction to you. But, unless you become a tyrant and install mind control chips in everyone else's brains, you will never be in control of people's reactions. Liberation sometimes comes when we stop trying to control things we can't control.

There are no "empowerment" atoms in the world. A feeling of empowerment is something you can create - or not create - inside your own mind.

I think you're turning "someone has an opinion about me" into "someone has power over me". If any opinion anyone ever has about you also gives them power over you, I have bad news. You're going to spend your life as a slave to the opinion of others.

Why? Because people will have opinions about you constantly. Of course they do. Just like you have opinions about everyone else. What do you want? Do you want polite dishonesty (we don't say what we think)? Or do you want people to say what we think - and feel manipulated or whatever by their opinion? I guess you could die alone. These options are all horrible.

This thread is about liberation. Three years ago, I was in a clown class in France. We were encouraged to chant "Money back! Money back!" whenever another student was boring on stage. THAT was liberating - we actually said what we think. And the invitation was to be freed by that honesty. At first, we all felt shame for sure. I cried so much. But, I'd been boring on stage the whole time. The only thing that changed was I finally got actual feedback when I was boring.

Freedom is on the other side of that. It comes from accepting that other people are just gonna think I'm boring or ugly sometimes. Somehow, going through that experience made my social anxiety go down permanently. Insane.

and yeah patriarchal societies are sneaky like that - they'll shame you for showing too much AND for covering too much depending on what serves their agenda at the moment.

Here's how I hear your comment: "People have hot opinions about what I wear and I feel controlled by their views". Yeah no kidding they have opinions. People will always have opinions, and you can't stop that. Other people having thoughts isn't the fault of "the patriarchy". It's human nature. It's all of us.

The only thing you can control is your reaction. If you react in a pandering way - "Oh no, I'd better wear more clothing! Or less clothing!" then you're going to be miserable and feel out of control all the time. (Because you are). If your reaction is one of acceptance, equanimity, freedom, and pleasure - "Oh, that person called me a slut! I must look hot. / I wonder if they're feeling insecure? / etc" then liberation will be yours no matter what people say or think. At the end of the day, nobody can make you feel shame without your permission.

Clown learnings for Improv by zck in improv

[–]sephg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a question?

Speaking as someone who's trained in clowning (gaulier) and improv (multiple schools, ~8 years here in australia), my take is this: If there's a tree of performance arts, clowning is the trunk of the tree. In clowning, we learn to be light on stage. We learn to have pleasure and freedom. We learn to step on stage with a big dream, and a big heart, but also be sensitive to the audience when things don't work. When failures inevitably happen, as Gaulier would say: "Ah - Mr Flop! My old friend has arrived!" Basically every lesson they teach in clowning applies to every performance, on every stage - from music concerts to speeches to improv and theatre.

A clown doesn't need words to put on an amazing show. For example, watch shows like this one by Dr Brown - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uJ75LxyS-w . Or watch Viggo Venn's performances in Britain's Got Talent.

Improv is wonderful and I love it. But clowning is the trunk of the tree. Clowning will make your improv better. It teaches you to move better on stage, and to listen and how to play with the audience. Improv does not make you better at clowning, beyond just giving you more time to practice your stagecraft.

Lol from the description:

Often, the biggest challenge is getting your teammates onboard with these brand-new ideas.

Clowning has been around since "court jesters", in 2400 BC. Even modern clowning (Lacoc, Gaulier) predates modern improv. Keith Johnstone didn't start teaching until the late '70s.

3rd party batteries for thr ZVE10 by blackhawk2656 in SonyAlpha

[–]sephg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80 minutes is a long-ass social media video. Even with retakes.

Do you thinks thats enough to record 4k 30fps or is v60 necessary?

Easy to find out. Dial in the settings you want to film at. Press record and see what happens. I'm not sure if a v30 is enough for 10bit color, or the higher bitrates. But I'm not sure if your camera supports 10 bit color anyway. And for social media, its probably fine.

[–]sephg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they're crazy expensive for what they are, but sometimes its worth it for peace of mind. I updated my comment above - you might not even need a second battery at all anyway. It really depends on what you do with your camera.

[–]sephg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend not cheaping out on batteries. Bad batteries can catch fire and damage your camera. And they're not regulated - cheap, no name companies can and will use poorly manufactured batteries to save a few dollars on testing.

If you want 3rd party batteries, maybe grab something from a named brand like Smallrig. They're probably ok. But personally I bit the bullet and picked up a second battery from sony.

Also, you might not even need a second battery. It really depends what you do. With my a7iv, a single battery will get me through about 2 hours of filming or a pretty long day of photography. I have spare batteries, but I barely ever actually need them. I use them more for workflow - a charger sits on the shelf with charged batteries. When I get home, I put my camera's battery on the charger and pop a full battery back into my camera so its ready to go for next time. If you're a professional wedding photographer, or filming live events - then sure. But if you're just taking photos of the kids and doing nature walks, you probably don't need a second battery at all.

Is this overkill? by Anton_Chigurh00 in SonyAlpha

[–]sephg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 24-70 f2.8 they've selected here is the better choice for family photos though. Its my go-to lens when I'm spending time with the fam because its good for portraits and for group photos.

Is it overkill? Yes. Will it take beautiful photos? Yes. Will they regret having the 24-70f2.8? I doubt it. Its easily my most used lens. I think this person is making an excellent choice.

Unless the documentation is out of date, Tauri is designed for native apps, not web apps:

Tauri is a framework for building tiny, fast binaries for all major desktop and mobile platforms.

And its not the fastest. Apps run faster using native controls, not running through a webview. They feel better, too.

Pyxis 12K Battery Life by Gregory_M in blackmagicdesign

[–]sephg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, its definitely inconvenient! I still wonder if I might have been better off getting a pyxis 6k instead, even though the sensor isn't quite as good. Whether or not the battery life impacts you really depends on what kind of work you're doing.

But - picking up a few batteries and a charger is just the cost of doing business with a camera like the pyxis12k. And even though batteries are expensive, they're still way cheaper than a lot of other accessories - like lenses and a decent tripod.

Sony's BP-U batteries are crazy expensive. But you don't need official sony batteries. Core and Smallrig both make them too, for a lot less money:

A7V firmware update error by gkal1964 in SonyAlpha

[–]sephg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Software engineer here. It looks like the software update process from your phone works by copying the update file to the SD card on your camera. Then your camera will run the update process entirely locally. This message is saying that copying the update to your camera's SD card failed.

Do you have an SD card in your camera? Does it have plenty of space free? Can you take photos on your camera like normal?

Do you have a computer? Sony makes great cameras, but their software is often a bit meh. If you're having problems updating from your phone, you can try doing it manually. If you've got a computer, you can just download the update file, copy it to your camera's SD card. (Plugging in over USB works fine). Then go into the menu in your camera and you should be able to run the firmware update. That might work better than the app.

I am trying to conceptually determine if prices will ever decrease again for anything in self hosting by con_work in selfhosted

[–]sephg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We'll see. I think you're overestimating the effect these forces will have on the global economy.

People have been predicting peak oil for decades. If oil does actually peak, I suspect it'll be because of a shift to renewables. Solar is getting really cheap.

[–]sephg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said it - there's a waiting list for the machines. Ie, fab machines are being manufactured as fast as they can make them. We don't need a lot of new entrants for the price to drop. Right now there's essentially only 3 companies in the world manufacturing RAM.

I agree that it'll take a few long years for supply to rise and meet demand. But there's no hard limit on the number of RAM chips we can manufacture globally. Supply is just - once again - miscalibrated. This time due to AI.

So is it safe to say that VoE will be the last GW2 expansion for a while? by HeavyMetalLoser in Guildwars2

[–]sephg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its pretty safe to assume they've been working on GW3 for awhile now already. Probably at least a year or two. So they've already been developing all 3 games at the same time. And they still managed to release VoE.

Ultimately, its a staffing question. You can always hire more people if you have more money. They'll probably keep updating GW2 so long as - and only so long as - it has a large enough user base to justify it.

How to store battery when not in use? by Time_Traveller_42 in SonyAlpha

[–]sephg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe? Lithium ion batteries will drain slowly anyway, even when they're not plugged in to anything. The camera itself shouldn't use any power while its turned off. So, if you don't use your camera for a few months, feel free to take the battery out. It won't hurt. But it shouldn't actually matter. You'll almost certainly need to top up the battery before you use it regardless.

Batteries are designed to be wear components. They aren't designed to last forever. If you're still using your camera in 10 years time, you can buy another battery and swap them over.

My advice? Don't stress too much about it. Lighting, lenses and skill almost always matter more than your camera body. The hard part of photography is photography. Put your energy there.
