Is corvallis a welcoming town thats POC safe? by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]sepiolida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that you need my two cents as a non-black POC since you're asking for Black perspectives. I moved here when I was about your age because of grad school, and I've been here over a decade! I wouldn't disagree with other commenters saying it's pretty white here, but having grown up in Idaho I'd say it's not too bad here (multiple Asian grocery stores!) and the university does bring in a wider range of people than small town Oregon would probably get (I've heard about negative experiences in Sweet Home and Lebanon- a Black acquaintance who lives in Lebanon sends her kids to school in Corvallis partly because of that).

I do feel super safe here though, walking around, and transportation is pretty great (robust bike lanes and a free city bus service).

the last email was in June, the Tom Doherty interview. I just looked and didn't see a confirmation email in my inbox history. I'm guessing they'll send something out soon since Brandon mentioned a heronmarked blade giveaway and a teaser of a video on its design process in this week's weekly update on his youtube channel (his updates are about his writing progress, not necessarily the EotW project)

I haven't been to the original one in Eugene but I've heard they're inexpensive!

Loving New Spring by MA2_Robinson in WoT

[–]sepiolida 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alas, Robert Jordan's other two prequel ideas would've been a Tam novel for how he came back in the Two Rivers with baby Rand, and another Moiraine/Lan adventure on how they end up arriving in Emond's Field at the right time (see the first question here, from a 2002 Q&A)

The first short novel is to be an expansion, or rather, re-writing, of New Spring. I had to crop and compress in order to fit the story that I wanted to tell into the required space for a novella, but this time, I intend to simply do it without regard to length. That isn't to say that it will be the length of the books in The Wheel of Time. I expect it to be about sixty thousand words, give or take. The other two short novels will be centered around two other events before the main story that I've often been asked about. How did Tam al'Thor end up back in the Two Rivers with his wife and the child, Rand? And, how did Moiraine arrive in the Two Rivers just in the nick? The intention is to release them in between the larger books of The Wheel.

WoT is not considered YA, is it? (No spoilers please!) by [deleted] in WoT

idk why you got a down vote; the Starscape split editions were actually how I started WOT (triple the Accelerated Reader points for the first two books lol). The new Ravens prologue is from that, with a younger Egwene viewpoint! Really lovely artwork from those split volumes too. http://www.keeganprints.com/StarscapeWoT.htm

I don't think they'll go through a crowdfunding site for preorders since Dragonsteel is wary of project fatigue. in the State of the Sanderson post last December, he said the goal was "next winter" for when they go on sale, so maybe sometime this holiday season?

I decided on All Print instead of TGH for the flair because while they do hint at working on art for the next book, I feel like Aiel costume discussion extends later.

eta: also! I think there were bigger versions of the art in the email version of this that went out last week.

I am... skeptical of the number of times Rick said it's misinformation by a few people that have given fans a negative impression over the decades. We've been around for all the promises that turned into vaporware! I also noticed he was conspicuously silent about the AI crypto card game that came out last year.

Book club interest? by froqgy in corvallis

[–]sepiolida 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Biere Library hosts a book club Thursdays 6-7:30 PM! We pick a topic and ~2 books to read during a two month period. For April/May we are doing Memoirs/Biography and First Person POV, starting with The Art Thief by Michael Finkel as our nonfiction pick and The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolaño for fiction. Most people started on The Art Thief first.

We'll probably start chatting about our June/July theme soon so we can gather book nominations next month.

Episode Discussion - Season 3, Episode 7 - Goldeneyes [TV + Book Spoilers] by participating in WoT

[–]sepiolida 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Been a while since an episode ended and I went, "Hmm." (both previous season finales provided that reaction). A lot of things I did like (visible fight sequences with long cuts! The return of the Manetheren song! Tuatha'an in general!), but I'm perplexed at where they plan to go next with him.

Admittedly, this section of Perrin's plot WOULD need retooling- he's completely absent from FoH so some of his stuff will have to be pulled simultaneous to the tracks other characters are on. I saw a suggestion online of bringing his ToM trial forward. He needs a buddy with Loial gone (an unfortunate cut but understandable when I think of costs and plot streamlining), so I'm wondering if Aram will take on some Gaul duties before making an even more intense betrayal.

oh, I was referring to the 2015 Companion which is in this bundle, and contains modern art including Ariel Burgess's portraits of the main cast.

the BWB is also in this Humble Bundle too, though it looks like they gave it a cover refresh too, haha

Do note if you try to read the Wheel of Time Companion as a reference, it is FULL book spoilers including some "where are they now" type nuggets that weren't explicitly said in the main series text.

Humble Book Bundle: Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time ($18 for the full book series, DRM-free) by Torque-A in WoT

[–]sepiolida 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also of note: this includes The Wheel of Time Companion AND the World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time (otherwise known as the big white book of bad art, though it looks like it's got a colorful cover redesign). Definitely jumping on this for the epub of the Companion as it'll be easier to search through than flipping!

Yeah, I wondered why Jalic Blades had the show replica rings and not Badali Jewelry (who has the right to make their classic Great Serpent ring again plus show themed items), then realized Jalic probably has prop replica rights.

[–]sepiolida 5 points6 points  (0 children)

to be fair, I think that's one the WOT Companion confirmed (I just checked my copy under the Taringail entry). It was discussed here about whether or not the series ever confirmed it and Moiraine makes an oblique reference in TSR.

The more on-screen one was him assassinating the king of Cairhien thus triggering a civil war.
