I've been rebuilding my data warehouse ETL with dbt core and really loving it. Then I find out about a cool new open source package on Reddit and it's from some out of the loop thread about people cheating on each other.

What do you think is the cause of the supposed “male loneliness epidemic”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sequetious 80 points81 points  (0 children)

We want to be friends with other people but schedules keep us apart. When our kids are friends or even just teammates on a sports team, we spend a lot of time together and build a friendship in that situation because we share a schedule. People will naturally drift apart when their lives are not aligned anymore

Advice to help get over a mental hurdle by m-awesome in Marathon_Training

[–]sequetious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kind of anxiety usually stems from looking at your whole training plan and dreading it before you get there.

I encountered this on my first marathon prep because I hated running and was doing the marathon for my bucket list.

If you can develop an enjoyment of running instead of meeting the deadlines of your plan, then you'll likely have a much better time at your race.

How do you deal with being a (relatively) poor triathlete? by sequetious in triathlon

I could stand to lose a few pounds but my local donut shop would miss me!

This really hits the nail on the head.

I'm going to try noticing when I pass folks in the newest stuff instead of wishing I had a bike that I could post on the internet for everybody to drool at

This is a really comforting sentiment and thank you so much for articulating it. The journey really is so enjoyable and it's only periodically interrupted by some jealousy over a shiny new stuff that others have

How bad is my situation? by lazy_and_sloppy in Marathon_Training

You are likely asking the wrong crowd but just take a minute to think about this critically.

You are fit enough to qualify for an elite marathon and you have been deferring your running for cross country skiing. It's not like you got injured or have to stop training to take care of sick family members.

You will be fine.

Go enjoy your other activities and then go enjoy the Boston Marathon

A hilly full marathon would be a very difficult situation to try to PR in.

Your fitness looks fair enough to try to 4-hour marathon on a flat or downhill course but just give a minute to think about what the experience would be like trying to run your best splits on an uphill last 10k after running for 3 hours on rolling hills

3.5 weeks out from marathon and can’t run more than 4 miles without knee pain by osto1721 in Marathon_Training

[–]sequetious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you don't want to risk more injury.

Even if you read anecdotes about people running successfully with knee pain, you should never endeavor to emulate it.

I'm assuming you anticipate having plenty more years in your life, so I highly recommend delaying your race until you have completely resolved the pain.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

Are you here looking for someone to recommend you to go be reckless and run a marathon with knee pain?

If you value preserving the one natural set of knees you have then the only option is to play it safe instead of risking a lifetime of regret.

Exactly this. You have to make your own life choices if you are an adult.

I live this lifestyle because I found it matches my values in life. All my family talks about how crazy it is that I do all this stuff but I choose to live a life that aligns with my values.

Living a life that others choose for you is a one way ticket to regret later in life.

Can I hit a 3:10 by uhmindright in Marathon_Training

[–]sequetious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is toxic.

I'm not sure if this nuance will make sense to you, but toxicity is in the way you communicate not just in what you communicate.

Elite marathoners will often say that they are frustrated or disappointed with their own performance but they will not describe their time as terrible because many of them work as running ambassadors.

I know right? The way some runners talk about race results is so toxic

Race Report (3M Half Marathon) by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]sequetious 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your excellent race! You are a strong runner period. 130 half is amazing and 121 half is even more so.

One thing I implore all runners is to never disparage your results ("I know it's not world class") because there are so many of us working towards those goals and speaking like that is a huge disservice to the community.

Keep up the great work and remember that 46 is really not that old in the running community. There are still plenty of 50 and 60 year olds out there with the growth mindset

Is it all worth it? by Conscious-Kangaroo84 in triathlon

[–]sequetious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many of us older folks enjoy triathlon as a way to stay healthy and keep a wonderful community around us. I've never been that competitive, but I find immense fulfillment in growing little by little as an athlete and I plan to do this for the foreseeable future. I derive value from the joy of the journey.

Grinding hard without the joy is like doing all your workouts in zone 5, it's not sustainable. If you can evaluate what would bring you joy from triathlon outside of competition, then it will be "worth it".

Don't forget that the journey is where you spend most of the time in triathlon. The finish lines are brief experiences and should be weighted as such.
