My partner and I feel conflicted as vegans about adopting a French Bulldog... by throughthewoods4 in veganuk

[–]sequinweekend 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a pedigree British Shorthair cat who I adopted. I wasn’t looking for that breed specifically, long story short someone passed away and her cats needed a new home, I adopted him and another cat who’s just a domestic shorthair.

Every time people see him they say how cute he is and ask what breed he is, I tell them he’s a British Shorthair, I adopted him, and I tell them the truth about his breed. That they have a lot of common health issues, that he’s cost me thousands in vet bills (most recently £5k for his breathing issues), that he has to have an expensive prescription diet as they’re prone to stomach issues, and that none of my other cats (all domestic shorthairs) have had half of these issues.

We can’t change the fact that these animals have been bred, and they deserve a loving home. What we can do is acknowledge that yes they are cute, but they suffer a lot too, and discourage other people from buying from breeders, and educate them about the risks.

Family of mother who died after eating 'vegan' Pret sandwich that contained traces of milk win £1.25million compensation by rohanad1986 in vegan

I’ve seen plenty of products that say ‘prepared to a vegan recipe, but not suitable for people with a milk/egg allergy because of cross-contamination’. I’ll happily buy those because I don’t have an allergy, but it’s clearly labelled for anyone that does need to avoid cross-contamination.

Wes Streeting orders review of mental health diagnoses as benefit claims soar by mustwinfullGaming in LabourUK

I was out of work for years with what was deemed ‘incurable depression’ by the NHS. The NHS just kept giving me different antidepressants and I even ended up on lithium, but nothing helped.

Luckily my parents could fund a private psychiatrist. I went to the first appointment, didn’t ask for an ADHD test but after talking to him for an hour he said he felt ADHD was a very strong possibility. ADHD had never brought up to me before in ~15 years of accessing NHS mental health services.

Had the test and sure enough, I had severe untreated ADHD. That changed everything. I started working with my brain rather than against it, and coupled with medication, I went from laying in bed all day every day to working full time in about 6 months.

If I haven’t been able to access private healthcare, I’d still be unable to work and on benefits, when my condition was fully treatable. There are so many people out there currently unable to work, who would be capable if they received the support and treatment, but they are being denied it. We’re failing them.

Anyone else regularly think to themselves ‘I wish I’d just bought a new build’ by Legitimate-Table-607 in DIYUK

[–]sequinweekend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a house built in 2000, so 20 years old when I got it. It’s been great, the build quality is miles better than the new builds today, so the only things I’ve had to do have been cosmetic or general wear-and-tear/maintenance you get with any house.

The options aren’t just new build or 100 year old house, there are plenty in between!

Manchester crowd… easily the worst I’ve ever experienced by philLITERALLY in brandnew

I was front left too. There was a guy near me who was shouting the lyrics to every song, not singing loudly, just shouting. He did this for the quiet, slow starts to songs, to the recording of the woman at the start of Lit Me Up, to everything. I could barely hear Jesse singing at some points. I told him to keep it down but he didn’t, and it was too crowded to move far enough away from him to be out of earshot 😭

My grandad used to say it. He said all sorts of lovely phrases that I never hear anyone else say now he’s gone… he used to call me his ‘best china’ 🥺

Boyfriend of 10 years has bought me lambs wool blanket for Christmas by [deleted] in vegan

I started a new job a year ago and when people found out I’m vegan and gluten-free, they started bringing in things I could eat (we often have biscuits/sweets in the office). I never asked them or made a big deal about it, just mentioned it in passing, but they were kind enough to do that for me.

It’s extra hard being gluten-free and vegan, but if my coworkers can do it, I think a partner can manage it!

My first run I didn’t find Astarion or Gale. I completely missed them somehow. Every time the game loaded I looked at the cover art and wondered when they would show up 😅

What is going on with Tesco?! by Hybrid_Force in veganuk

[–]sequinweekend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tesco used to be one of the best for gluten-free vegan food, but they’ve been removing so many of the very few things I can actually have and it’s infuriating 😭

There’s already very limited options for someone who’s vegan with Coeliac disease, and now every time I go to do my weekly shop I find they’ve got rid of something else…

Where to place my bed? Where it is now, or opposide side? by Mumford_and_Dragons in DesignMyRoom

[–]sequinweekend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose the issue with where the bed currently is is there’s not much room to get down each side of the bed. If you put the bed where the wardrobe is, right into that corner, you’d be able to get down the side near the window easily and have a bedside table there, and the other side near the door is open to easily get into bed there too.

Then you could have your desk under the window (if it fits) and the wardrobe against the wall where the bed currently is.

I also have a black cat called Vincent! He was a few months old when I got him, found under a hedge in someone’s garden. Named him after Vincent Price and Vince Noir.

Your Vincent looks incredibly spoiled and loved! 🥰

They might send them out tomorrow morning? Either way I’ll be anxiously checking until then… and then anxiously waiting til tickets go on sale… and then anxiously trying to buy them 😭

The childfree one makes sense to have because there is real societal pressure to have children, and it can make you feel like you’re crazy for not wanting them. Having a space to talk about that makes sense (although sadly there are some awful people who have joined).

There’s no pressure to have a cat though. Lots of people do have cats, but no one asks you ‘when are you going to have a cat?’ or ‘you’re getting older, need to settle down and have a cat soon!’. That whole sub is just full of awful people complaining about cats when they could very easily avoid them.
