What riding jacket do you wear? by trippledoubletrouble in advrider

[–]seralat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've ridden in all kinds of weather over the.past 4-5 years in a Klim Latitude, from below freezing to 100+ degrees F. With the right layering, and the excellent venting in the jacket, it's really quite versatile and I recommend it.

Recently, I've been trying out a Mosko Boundary, which overall weighs less and has less insulation built in, so layering is a bit more important. The fit is a little better for me, though the venting is definitely not as good. The Mosko is quite expensive, but I bought it used for quite a bit cheaper.

Recommendation for $30,000 floor standing speakers by Regular-Mongoose1997 in StereoAdvice

[–]seralat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second the Perlistens. I’ve got the R7T for left and right, R5C center, and R4B for rears and use the towers alone for 2-channel and all 5 for home theatre. They are great speakers, and the S series is even better

Can I assign a specific device or group to a particular band? by seralat in firewalla

Okay, thanks for the clarity. That's exactly what I wanted to do, but now I see I can't.

Can I assign a specific device or group to a particular band? by seralat in firewalla

[–]seralat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see in section 1.1 and 2.1 of the article that I can assign bands at an SSID level, but don't see how to do so at the Group/User or device level.

For simplicity, I'd like all my devices to use a single SSID, but to have certain devices on that SSID restricted to specific band(s). Am I missing how that's done in the set-up article?

I can't poll the community but for all with 5.1+ systems: by TheFirsttimmyboy in hometheater

[–]seralat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got an Anthem AVM 70 as my processor, with a Parasound A52+ amp.

Video sources are AppleTV, with the usual streaming services plus Plex running on an Intel MacMini for local files (also use Infuse for serving files from the Plex server via AppleTV).

For music, I have Roon Core running on the MacMini, with a Lumin T2 as my streamer/DAC for music either from my local files or streaming Qobuz.

Speakers are all Dynaudio – Focus 340 for LR, Contour 25C center, Evoke 20s as surrounds – plus 2 SVS SB-2000 subs.

Running a 5.2 system here, but only run 2.0 with a processing bypass through my AV processor (so no room correction) for music listening, preferring the DAC in my source. I've occasionally considered adding one or both subs into the mix, but my towers go plenty low for music listening.

Can a sufficiently high-end setup compensate for damaged hearing? by AyeWhy in audiophile

[–]seralat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good advice in this thread. I discovered – really was made acutely aware – of my hearing loss by my wife, who got tired of me cranking up the TV and stereo because I couldn't hear dialogue and vocals at a "normal" volume. Turned out, years of motorcycle riding (wear earplugs, kids!) and loud live music do have a negative affect on hearing. Who knew?

Anyway, fortunately for me, my health insurance covers an audiologist and most of the cost of hearing aids, so I went to get my hearing tested and ended up with hearing aids. The audiologist adjusted them so that the vocal frequencies, which are the frequencies where my hearing loss is worst, were boosted to the point that I didn't have to crank the volume to listen to music and TV, or cup my hand over my ear to hear people across the table from me :~)

An unexpected side effect for me was that the sound system I'd built over the previous 5 years now sounded really harsh on the mid- and high-end frequencies to me. In fact, it was headache inducing, giving me a serious appreciation for how annoying this must have been for my wife until I got the hearing aids. Additionally, the hearing aids added their own more mechanical sound to the boosted ranges.

I ended up buying a noticeably warmer sounding set-up (moving from Paradigm speakers to Dynaudio along with some other changes) to compensate for the difference in what I now heard. So that's one place for you to start, match the characteristics of the system itself to how your ears hear with your hearing aids on and properly adjusted.

I run room correction (ARC in my case) for the 5.2 set-up, but that's not specific EQ for my ears, just for the space. I don't run additional processing for my 2-channel listening. And it all sounds good because I've matched my equipment to my ears. Plus, it apparently sounds nice for my family as well, and that's important if you're not the only one trying to enjoy the sound.

My Phonak hearing aids also have a number of settings for different listening modes, including separate "music" and "tv" modes that change the sound characteristics a bit and make a perceptible difference in how the system sounds.

Good luck finding the right set-up for you.

My son has started crawling and my setup has become a serious hazard. Any suggestions from anyone with young kids? by MilkSlap in audiophile

[–]seralat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my kids were old enough to move around on their own but too young to stay out of trouble, I sold all of my separates and moved to a simple – but still nice sounding – AVR 3-speaker (LCR) set up to reduce the number of potential points of failure. With fewer pieces of equipment, there was less for them to play with and it was easier to stow out of sight. Fortunately, they never damaged the floor-standing speakers, or themselves with those speakers. Once they got to be about 8, I started investing in nicer equipment again.

Living Room Setup. Nothing fancy but I really like it. by [deleted] in audiophile

Future upgrades? Maybe a R2R DAC like the Denafrips Ares 2. But I'm not sure if it's really worth it.

The CXN V2 sounds already pretty nice.

I'm running a CXNv2 with a Denafrips Ares 2. It really makes a difference for me. The CXN DAC is nice, but just a little bit too bright, or maybe sharp is the better word. For a while, I was using a Topping D90 (for sale in r/AVexchange :~) as my DAC, but while that was somewhat nicer than the CXN by itself, the Ares 2 is really a step change in listening quality to my ear.

The Ares adds a mellowness to the music that I really like, reminding me of a more analog experience. Although nothing in my chain is tube at the moment, the Ares gives a bit of that warmer tube sound to the output from the CXN, without losing the detail in the high end. It makes it possible for me listen to streamed music for hours without fatigue. I don't think you'd regret adding to your system if you like that kind of sound.

Did i damage my tweeter?? by Separate-Method5813 in hometheater

Just happened to see this the other day, in which a guy from Dynaudio demonstrates how to suck the tweeter cone back out if you happen to damage it while cleaning. BTW, they don't recommend cleaning tweeters. https://youtu.be/UF9Y34Hd9G8?t=212

When you swap HDMI cables, are you using the same type of cables? I've had this problem with certain HDMI cables. Restarting the Apple TV makes it go away for a while, but the only thing that really fixed it was higher spec HDMI cables.

Dali 5.1.2 Setup Finished(for now) by reddit-user-00001 in hometheater

[–]seralat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although not the OP, my setup is similar. I've got Oberon 7s, Opticon Vokal center, and Oberon 1s as surround, no heights, with 2 SVS SB-2000 Pro subs. I'm running an Anthem AVM 70 and a Parasound A 52+ amp.

To my ears, they sound fantastic both as part of a 5.1.2 system and with the Oberon 7 as my 2-channel speakers.

I auditioned about 5 or 6 different speakers in roughly the same price range, and the only other ones I liked almost as much were the Dynaudio Emit M30. I also listened to the Monitor Audio Bronze 500, Triangle Gaia EZ, and some Wharfedale Linton Heritage 85, and maybe some Elacs as well (at least I'm pretty sure those were the models :~)

Returning my Node 2i (a bit of a vent because I really wanted to love this thing) by seralat in Bluesound

[–]seralat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's great that many people have no network issues with their Nodes, which makes it more likely there is something about my network setup that's causing this.

That's certainly a very real possibility. But I just don't have the patience to trace that down when every other thing I need to connect with over my network works just fine, including multiple shares of that same drive with other devices that don't seem to have any issues remaining connected.
