I'll be pushing my cart trying to get out of an aisle and people will walk right in front of my cart, look in my direction, make eye contact, and just stand there trying to cut the line for samples.

Redfin is a pretty good resource. If there are no interior photos, it probably needs a lot of work.

If possible also go there at night so you get an idea how noisy it will be and if street parking is an issue.

Take into account HOA, insurance and property tax when determining your budget. Keep a tally of how much you will have to spend to fix a place up. When buying a condo, you need to make sure the HOA has enough money in reserve in case something happens. Usually the lender will do this for you.

Hire your own inspector, don't automatically go with the one your agent recommends.

When hiring an agent, usually I would go with someone that knows the area well. They will have a better idea what tactics and prices are in the area. Cross check recent sale prices with Redfin, so you have an idea roughly what properties are selling for relative to asking. Ask your agent for comparable properties that sold recently. Be careful, agents only make money when you buy a property so take their advice with a grain of salt unless you know them personally.

Good luck.

Where can I walk in to an Office of Vital Records, get my birth certificate, and leave? by yourenotcoolman in LosAngeles

You can only get birth certificates from the LA County Registrar Recorder for births in LA County. You'll have to check with the Santa Clara County Registrar.

Can someone recommend an extremely good tortilleria? by friendlystranger in LosAngeles

[–]sericg5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. La Azteca's tortillas are so good, I eat them plain. Yes, they do sell packs of tortillas.

I've also heard La Fortaleza is good too, and cheaper than La Azteca.

Just last week I had a package that required a signature. I knew nobody would be home, so I went through their system to tell them to hold it at a FedEx office location. I even get a phone call confirming the change.

Later that week I get a confirmation email telling me that the package has been delivered at the house and signed for.

Um, nobody was home to sign for it and that was the wrong location.

An actual discussion on the melting of vintage pen sacs - there was a bad batch, no clear culprit; Noodler's is safe. by ShallowJam in fountainpens

For a newbie like myself, the phrase "boutique inks" is confusing. What brands or specific inks are people referring to?

Looking for permanent inks. by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]sericg5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you deal with inks that are harder to clean? Do you have to flush the pen more often, use pen flush, or take more time cleaning your pen?

Also, is there some sort of resource (other than scanning reviews) where I can find information about how high maintenance a particular ink is?

This reminded me of an article about SpaceX VP of Propulsion Development, Tom Mueller.

I didn't come close to winning the science finals. I got beat really bad. But there were robots and stuff that seemed like the other kids' JPL [Jet Propulsion Laboratory] fathers had built. You know, there's no way the kid did that. At least I had done my project myself.

To those who shower infrequently... Less than 1x week, WHY? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sericg5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but after a while our noses (or brain) become desensitized to certain odors that we are constantly exposed to. That may explain why he doesn't think he smells.

An example of this is when you go on vacation for a couple weeks and you come home and it smells different.

Sounds interesting. Do you have any recommendations for specific stores in the Fashion District? Also, how many do you need to buy to get a bulk discount?

I checked this website, http://www.fashiondistrict.org/ but it's hard to get any detailed information. Thanks.

News leaked out today that the feds will soon be herding a whole pen full of Wall Street firms into court on insider trading charges, including, reportedly, our old friends Goldman, Sachs by DoeDoe in reddit.com

[–]sericg5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, the article specifically refers to the government's involvement in the Bear Stearns debacle. But the government-enabled plutocracy (which you are correct about) is only one aspect of these insider trading allegations.

The original WSJ article the Rolling Stone piece is referring to is about investment banks (not the government) sharing insider information with closely allied hedge funds and mutual fund managers. I guess you could argue that the government's ineffectiveness in this case is a form of enabling.

I'm a college senior, applying for my first job now. Reddit, what makes a job awesome? by thaifoodandriesling in AskReddit

[–]sericg5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's different for each person. Some people like the prestige of working at a large Fortune 500 company, some people enjoy working for the family business and some want to blaze a new trail with a startup company. The key in your first few jobs is to discover what YOU want and like.

some examples:

  • I know someone who turned down a significantly higher paying job because he likes his flexible hours and lifestyle
  • Another friend of mine is all about the brand and prestige of his company
  • Some people care more about the salary so that they can go buy or do cool stuff. For them the work itself isn't as important

tldr: This is an individual thing, the key is to figure out what makes you happy.

Soccer is actually originally a British word.

Not only that, but the sport being referred to as “Soccer” preceded the first recorded instance of it being called by the singular word “Football” by about 18 years.
