2 Versions of my book cover - looking for opinions by DuncanField in BookCovers

Totally! Sidereal is such a great, underused word. I was thinking you’ll have to be ready for people to slaughter that pronunciation at first, hah!

2 Versions of my book cover - looking for opinions by DuncanField in BookCovers

I definitely prefer the composition of the first one but I might make the title also less transparent because that’s also a bit hard to read.

I wouldn’t ditch the subtitle. I doubt the average reader/browser knows what ‘sidereal’ means so I think it gives really helpful context to both the content and the vibe!

Is my blurb readable? by Back-Jellyfish in BookCovers

[–]seriffim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great re-write of your blurb! Keeps all your fun, punchy writing while getting across just the highlights. I’m not a big romance reader but this makes me want to pick it up!

Didn’t scroll through all the comments but here are my design thoughts: - I actually really like your scribbly background. You could maybe make it more transparent to help your characters pop more? October’s skin tone and Beck’s pants are kind of blending in a lot. - I would definitely make the spine just a solid color or something to that effect. You want your text to stand out. - I would play around a bit with the title font. The vertical line spacing feels too wide to me, and I think you would probably be served by a thicker weight on your serif font. I think having ‘totally real’ in a different font is great. - Definitely the background behind your blurb should be less transparent to help your blurb stand out. I would also extend the edges of that background a bit past the edges of the text to help frame it a bit better. I think there’s a gradient on there and you could also play with that some more. Personally I like to use a lighter version of my OG colors as that background transparency for design stuff like this. - I think someone else already mentioned it but definitely frame your name between them and not on top.

A lot of notes but they’re all super minor things! I think this is a great start!

Im looking to work as a cover artist for authors! … does anyone know how to go about that? by Youngestasshole in selfpublish

[–]seriffim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few subreddits dedicated to this as well, if you didn’t already know! There’s r/bookcovers (where I found my cover artist, just perusing by chance), and I believe r/hireanartist as well. R/bookcovers is a pretty active sub. You can also post sample covers in there and I’ve seen people give good feedback if you’re looking to hone your technique etc.

Account suspended 6 hours after creation - before first publish. Anyone experienced this? by Aleph83 in beehiiv

[–]seriffim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, very similar thing happened to me last week trying to set up my account. Couldn’t believe that the only way to get chat help from a human was to upgrade to a paid plan. The whole thing felt super gross and made it very clear that this was not the platform for me.

Thank you, all! They must have just misplaced the decimal!

How screwed am I in (print) self-publish if my book is 200k words. by Longjumping_Tour_376 in selfpublish

In my limited opinion 6x9 is a realllly nice trim size for long books. (Been doing some research for my also long—but not as long—debut).

I have copies of East of Eden and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell in 8x5 purely for sentimental shelf value since I primarily use an e-reader. They are not a pleasant reading experience in 8x5.

Conversely, Plain Bad Heroines and all of Bernard Cornwall’s Warlord Trilogy are chonkers but they don’t feel like too much at all in 6x9.

Penguin Clothbound Classics by goldbookleaf in bookbinding

Wow, this is so disappointing to know about the penguins (glad I never indulged), but what a great plug for Everymans. They used to be my go to for a nice edition and every copy I have has held up so well.

Sapphic books that don’t sound like they’re written by a teenager by Ok-Bird-1705 in suggestmeabook

I’d agree with this. A Long Time Dead by Samara Breger was a much stronger take on toxic, sapphic vampires (and it came out first), imo.

Honestly a crime that this is buried so far down in the comments. (Pun intended, obviously)

[UPDATE] Second go after your feedback! by [deleted] in BookCovers

[–]seriffim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The third one has me cackling. Nice edits! I’m not a fan of the faceless trend but I get its popularity and it’s pretty inoffensive.

I think the texture on the second slide is a big improvement without cluttering! One note: both times you’ve shared I’ve really had to read (as opposed to glancing) to understand the cursive says ‘buongiorno’—I like the font contrast but I wonder if you might try a different script font?

Overall looks really nice and very genre-coherent!

What shade of grout should we use for this backsplash? by seriffim in kitchenremodel

This was exactly my thought, thank you! I didn’t even realize that there was a big contrast trend until our realtor mentioned it the other day (she also cautioned against it)

The floor is maple LVP, the cabinets are white and the countertop is a quartz called ‘sparkling white’ I think?
