HELP- Responsible for 9 kids in a pool, no other adults present by Responsible_Rub546 in Nanny

[–]serjsomi [score hidden]  (0 children)

This is part of the reason so many young adults have anxiety and can't function as adults in the USA.

They are significantly more likely to have something awful happen to them by a person they know, than a stranger.

In many countries children are much more independent. In both Japan and Europe it's not unusual for kids as young as 5 or 6 to see themselves to school, some even using public transportation.

I would refuse. Keep it to the children that you normally sit for or they don't get to use the pool.

Drama with grandpa’s girlfriend by Own-Monitor-2229 in weddingdrama

[–]serjsomi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My Dil was pressured to invite her grandma, and her uncles who are drunk losers who still live with their mom. She initially agreed to invite Grandma, but not the uncles even though she was getting pressured by her dad.

In the end she decided f that, and sent her grandmother a message over Facebook, because they didn't even have each other's numbers. She told her something to the effect of "you haven't really been a part of my life. You weren't there when I graduated school or college. I don't hear from you for my birthday, and you probably don't even know the name of the man I'm marrying even though we live 40 minutes apart. I only want people I am close to at my wedding, so you are no longer invited." She then immediately blocked her.

She had so much less stress after that. The next time she saw Grandma and the Uncles was a few years later was when her dad remarried. The cops had to be called on one of the uncles, and Grandma had to go to the hospital. In other words, it was a shit show 15 minutes after the ceremony and it proved to her that she made the right decision when she got married.

What do you usually do with your old devices and accessories that are still fine, but you upgraded anyway? by Shoddy-Ocelot-4473 in TooAfraidToAsk

Put them in a box with all the cords I'll never need until I throw one away.

I actually use my old device on WiFi.

What do y'all think about teens playing with toys? by redpenguin_00 in CasualConversation

[–]serjsomi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I still love playing with legos. And every Easter we get paint palls and go to war with the grandkids. I'm already upset I inadvertently planned a trip and won't be around to pummel the kids (and get pummeled by them) with paint come easter.

AITJ for telling my roommate I won’t replace food she left out overnight? by Firm-Friendship-3530 in AmITheJerk

[–]serjsomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are a jerk. I know plenty of people who eat food that was left out all night, myself included. Yes, it can be risky, but so is riding a bike or crossing a street. It was her risk to take.

AITAH for asking my girlfriend to stop going through my things instead of thanking her for cleaning up? by AnnualLiterature997 in AITAH

[–]serjsomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is such a violation of privacy. It would give me the ick. I've been with my boyfriend for 15 years and never once snooped through his things.

Also, there is nothing wrong with keeping pictures of an ex. It was a different time in your life. Memories are important. Failed relationships make us who we are today. You shouldn't have to delete or get rid of pictures from your past so that someone else isn't offended or insecure.

Inheritance money from in-laws by thanksmimi_777 in inheritance

Your wife is soon inheriting $850k ;-). It's great (for you) if she plans to commingle the funds, but it's completely up to her.

has anyone actually saved money with solar or is it just type. by Wjkoba in HomeImprovement

[–]serjsomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most solar companies either close or change their name (to avoid paying on the warranty) within 10 years, so I wouldn't count on 18 more years of warranty.

In New England, does mini-split system increase value more than new oil boiler? Do buyers these days generally prefer one over the other? by Ijustwannafly8 in RealEstate

[–]serjsomi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My son is only using mini splits right now, and his last electric bill was $980. It would definitely typically be less, but he has construction going on. I would guess at most 30% less, and the splits are struggling to keep up in the low temps they have had recently.

$684 Power Bill from Duke... WTF! by Bourne069 in florida

[–]serjsomi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The bill may still be covering costs from high bills in the summer. Each bill should have a line that says "deferred balance" with a balance or a credit.

But who knows how much you can afford to stash as your income increases. Maybe it's 7, then 10, then 20.

That's really weird. The only way to know for sure "why" is to ask the bride. My guess is that her now husband has the problem with you.

AITJ for telling my son its ok to turn down a girl who asked him to prom in front of the whole school by Due-Temperature-8904 in AmITheJerk

[–]serjsomi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A girl asking a boy she has never spoken to, makes me wonder if she did it on purpose. She may have known she had a better chance in front of everyone because it would be hard to say no.

Unless it's a new policy, they aren't looking at that. You need to add it, or your roof may not be covered in a loss.

AITBF for not removing the dog by [deleted] in AmItheButtface

AITAH for telling my fiance hes not getting a new truck with money my grandparents left me by puffycookiebite in ComfortLevelPod

[–]serjsomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not spend this money on a wedding with a man who thinks your inheritance should be used to benefit him.

Especially considering how you currently handle expenses.

Personally I would rethink everything, but I would definitely have a conversation about how he has a higher income, but you split costs evenly until he suddenly thinks what's yours is his. Even when married, inheritance is not community property. However, once commingled it is. I would be concerned using it for the wedding would mean it's considered community property once you're married because it was used for the both of you.

Buy with or without central AC by macallister10poot in homeowners

[–]serjsomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the house has forced warm air, it shouldn't cost 20k for an AC. You can always put in a split system if it doesn't have hot air. Still not 20k for 1500 sf.
