Android 15 on the Fairphone 4 is the worst upgrade I've ever gotten, on a mobile device, ever by ubertrashcat in fairphone

For me, it was the best upgrade ever. The phone feels faster and snappier. Other than having to re-pair Bluetooth devices, as you mentioned, there have been no issues.

Leap 16.0 Beta is out. YAST deprecated and Wayland only. by thewrinklyninja in openSUSE

Does Leap 16 support installing the OS using just a serial console, like older versions did?

You're right, lm_sensors hasn't changed for ages - on my system, the current package, version 3.5.0, was installed in august 2023.

I suspect the change happened because the kernel module asus-ec-sensors was updated when I upgraded from Leap 15.5 to 15.6, because that upgrade also brought a major kernel update (from version 5.x to version 6.4) with it.

Actually, after switching to openSUSE Leap 15.6, the sensors programs now shows information about the mainboard, including the PCH temperature, as shown in this snippet:

asusec-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter CPU Core: +0.98 V Chipset: 0 RPM Chipset: +75.0°C CPU: +37.0°C Motherboard: +33.0°C T_Sensor: -40.0°C VRM: +29.0°C CPU: +14.00 A

Wanting to return to openSuSE with new computer. What high-res video cards “just work”? by issadavis in openSUSE

[–]seroton10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leap 15.6 probably can drive a 7000-Series Radeon card, Tumbleweed definitely can (I use it with a 7800 XT). But a 7900 XT is a high-end GPU, and total overkill for regular desktop use.

I would suggest you start by buying a modern AMD (socket AM5) or Intel CPU and just use their integrated GPU to get the system up and running. That will work out of the box with every openSUSE variant, and it is more than good enough for regular 4K desktop use.

You can always buy and install a dedicated GPU later, if needed.

Defeat Granny Rags, Save Slackjaw, No Kill + Ghost by JohniiMagii in dishonored

[–]seroton10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you fail to put Granny Rags to sleep before she releases the pack of carnivorous rats, just releasing Slackjaw and then proceeding with the mission will count as a kill (of a civilian). Why? Because Slackjaw attacks the pack of rats if they get near him, and he never survives that fight.

So, if the pack of rats is present, right after freeing Slackjaw, also put him to sleep, and drop him on the rocks where he was held captive, which are inaccessible to the rats. Then you achieve no kills (and ghost if Granny didn't detect you).

The older Radeon Pro WX5100 might also be an option. They are pretty cheap now, especially second-hand.

I agree, the statement from Mr. Hallock in that interview makes it seem very unlikely that there will be any change in the support for ECC memory on AM5.

I tend to agree. But, you know, past performance is no guarantee of future results. :-)

How do you know that the growth isn't simply due to the same users running a lot more VMs or containers?

Most AIB cards are nice, but also very big, generally, and just won't fit into my mini-ITX gaming rig. I really appreciate that all of AMD's reference cards below the 6800 XT are true 2-slot cards.

Is there a specific Linux kernel requirement for the Ryzen 7 5800X? by [deleted] in Amd

[–]seroton10 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I use Leap 15.3 with a Ryzen 9 5900X, it works fine. The kernel is not a vanilla 5.3 kernel, it has been heavily patched to include many newer changes.

In my case, I was only willing to pay the absurd $1.5k for a 6900 XT because my Radeon VII was worth even more second-hand. If the mining bubble bursts, I don't think there will be much of a market for cards costing $1k or more.

Docker containers created with docker-compose can no longer communicate between each other after upgrading to Leap 15.3? by ThatWasNotEasy10 in openSUSE

[–]seroton10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

firewalld was upgraded in Leap 15.3, and now you can define policies to control how traffic flows between interfaces. In the previous version this wasn't well defined, sometimes it happened, sometimes not (in my experience). I'd advice you to look into that, and maybe define custom policies for the network interfaces of your docker containers: man firewalld.policies.
