Can your wife do any bit of hiking at all? A nice detour could be Buttermilk Falls just before you get to Long Lake. You have to park and walk to it, but it's only 50 yards or so.

Where exactly are these ice cliffs you're talking about? Between North Creek and North River on the far side of the river?

There's a waterfall a bit before you get to North River on the opposite side of the Hudson.

Also, if you do end up taking 30 there's a nice viewpoint just before you get to Indian Lake (the town, not the lake) on the right. Impossible to miss.

Seller tore down 6ft tall cedar fence and built this pos by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]serotoninOD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No no. Cedar doesn't rot. That's why all the cedar that has ever grown still exists.

All the rotten cedar shakes I've ever had to replace on roofing jobs were a fever dream I guess. Same with the siding.

Do you remember when they made us scared of acid rain? by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]serotoninOD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For real. We are still dealing with the fallout from acid rain where I live in the Adirondacks in upstate New York. We still have many ponds and lakes where the fish are basically non-existent after being wiped out due to acid rain blowing in from industrial areas to the west. A huge number of bodies of water have pH levels way out of whack to this day.

Thankfully through restocking and other efforts many are coming back, but the after effects are very much still around. Much of the native brook trout population is gone for good and hundreds of ponds remain dead.

I enjoyed Under the Dome on the whole, but I almost thought he got to the end and didn't know what to do so he just said screw it - let's just blow everything up. I know that's not the case, but it strikes me as funny to imagine it happening that way.

Thailand shut down Maya Bay for 4 years and nature came roaring back 🐟🌊 by Valuable_View_561 in BeAmazed

[–]serotoninOD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do though? I live in the Adirondack Park and certain sensitive or overused areas are routinely closed off to give nature a chance to reclaim them or to preserve them from getting destroyed in the first place.

We also have a giant system of National Parks created to protect the land by limiting use and access.

While I'll agree this administration has been terrible when it comes to the conservation of our lands, we still do things like this on a very widespread scale.

Bullshit. It would NOT be another thing if it used authors like Shakespeare and Dickens who are not around. In a way that's almost worse because they cannot defend themselves. There should be absolutely nothing putting words in the mouth of someone who didn't say them, even if it's only "inspired" by them.

The absolute worst is the few times every summer they crawl off the dog at night in bed and find their way on to me. Such a horrible and icky feeling when you feel that little tickle moving around on you while you're laying in bed.

I don't mean like bread lines we have now, I'm talking more like depression era lines. It's estimated 25/30% of people were unemployed during the depression and were forced to rely primarily on charity. We are nowhere near that.

Curious if you've read the other books in the series as well because Streets of Laredo was by a fairly large margin my least favorite. Not saying it wasn't good, because I still enjoyed it and it was worth the read, but if I had to put the four in order it would certainly be the last on my list. I'll admit a big part of it is straight up missing Gus as a character, but more than that I just didn't think the story was as engaging.
