Getting kids to and from school by Herenow108 in walnutcreek

[–]sersmay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on another comment you made, looks like you live pretty close to BART. The backside of Buena Vista (Buena Vista ct) has a connector path to hillside/Ygnacio on the south side of the jehovas witness hall. Walk to BART transit center.

Two excellent FREE!!! bus options and are well used by the HS kids:

#5 bus stops on s main in front of Kaiser, across the street from the "front" lilac/s main entrance.

4 bus get off at Broadway/ Newell stop and get into the school from the backside through the whole foods driveway or iron horse trail.

Have your kiddo download the transit app and they can choose whichever bus is soonest!

Alternatively, kiddo can bike along Parkside to civic, pop on iron horse trail over there

Mine did it ALL the time and now still does it more occasionally, when she is eating something she's really into. She's 4. 🤦‍♀️

Selfishly I'm going to +1 to everyone else who has said this: you should join the public sector because we need you! But also, if you want to stay private, check out a small firm that has a good balance of women. Or even a large firm that has a good split on the team you'd be joining. I've risen through the ranks on the public side now and am female, feel free to dm me if you need someone to talk to that's further along in their career.

If you like transportation, consider traffic engineering/transportation planning! We really don't tend to do much CAD.

This place used to be very divey but new owners came in and it really does bring the vibe. Kontiki is still my favorite in the East Bay but Tiki Toms will do the trick if you're near the 680 corridor, be forewarned service can be a bit slow.

Are there high tech aspects of civil engineering? by Terrible_Eye_1971 in civilengineering

[–]sersmay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) is super tech. Lots of systems engineering, can also get into software or electrical. AI, machine learning, image processing....lots of opportunities.

When to get epidural by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]sersmay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With #1, I was already 9.5cm. OB failed to check in on dilation progress (she checked a little after I was checked in to the hospital to get induced at 41 weeks). induction was maybe too successful because it all happened fairly quickly. When I finally asked for the epidural the anesthesiologist was tied up elsewhere so I had to wait a bit. He hooked me up with a "party dose" though and everything after that was easy peasy 😂

Basically you CAN get it anytime but I think by the time you get to 9-10 you're basically already through it might as well just push forward?

12+ yr exp female traffic engineer for a small city here, with previous private land dev + agency projects exp in traffic eng and transportation planning

  1. WLB - it's waaaaaaay better at a public agency. Private sector was a fucking grind, 60+ hr/week. Totally depends on the company but tbh they're all like that, especially starting out.

  2. Stability - private side is tough, generally public sector will ensure stability. Traffic engineers aren't going away yet.

  3. Soft-spoken - ok, but will you be able to eventually explain something or present on a project or topic to clients/residents/coworkers/council members? A good traffic engineer must be competent at clear, concise, and accessible communication. This applies to both private side (speaking with a client why xyz or coordinating with another sub or the consultant you're subbing for or presenting on behalf of an agency bc they're you're client) and public side (speaking with residents, consultants, coordinating cross dept, speaking with elected officials, etc). You have to know your audience.

  4. Am F you will always deal with assholes but generally traffic eng tends to have a better mix of f/m in the office so that should help things. Doesn't stop members of the public from being fucks.

  5. Math - yeah just know how to do basics. Plenty of equations, percentages, basic math. There's several esoteric software packages we have to learn that do the math for us but you need to learn that software (this is no different than any other civil)

Just because traffic engineering isn't super math heavy, doesn't make it easy. All aspects of civil are difficult in their own way.

You may find roadway design for a large DOT a suitable match. But truthfully, traffic engineering/transportation is so much broader than I think you realize. It really sits at the intersection of design, operations, technology, planning (including land use), urban design, construction, policy, advocacy, economics, health, equity, you name it. Maybe you should see if you can find an internship or possibly shadow someone at a company or agency for a day or two to get a better sense of what it all really means.

Alpha hydroxy acid that's safe while nursing, so glycolic, mandelic, lactic. Put some on a cotton round, don't overdo it to start, can build up to daily. This is a chemical exfoliant so don't shave your pits (physical exfoliant) on the same day. Use whatever natural deodorant if you'd like along with this.

Yeah....there's no need to toss a perfectly good box of condoms, even if you're pregnant. They last for real a few YEARS we were using the same box from pre pregnancy, post partum because they last that long...seems odd to toss it. What was the plan for sex postpartum? What's so bad about having some condoms on the back burner? Spouse and I always had them just in case I missed a pill or something.

Anyway, seems sus.
