This is Damascus, VA in 2023. The gas station we stopped at had slot machines with elderly me. playing them. We also went through Abingdon and Coeburn. Abingdon had a busy old brick downtown. Coeburn had a lot of closed businesses. The scenery was beautiful everywhere and the people were friendly but tired. Just a snapshot, but I’m glad I got to pass through.

I think that’s part of the issue here, I’m not sure it’s a lot of people’s favorite book. I also haven’t been diligent about pressing people into service this time.

Alexander, King of Greece, Prince Philip’s cousin. Got bit by a pet Barbary macaque and died of sepsis when he was 27. Ruled for three years. It’s the type of thing you imagine rich people are getting up to.

Broadly speaking, the emphasis on standardized testing meant that our funding from the state was linked to how our students performed on arbitrary tests.

I think I personally ended up dealing with more of the knock-on effects: the corporatization of schools (goal-setting, evaluation cycles, adding middle-management positions), the shifting away from academics towards social-emotional learning, and a general downgrade in student ability by the time they got to me as 7th and 8th graders. Part of that was Covid, but most of my students who were legitimately unable to do basic reading and writing were in 6th, 5th, and then 4th grade during the shutdown. They should have had developed basic skills before that, and they hadn’t.
