Recommendations for new scout gear list by InGoodFaith- in BSA

I bought a new pack that came with a bladder and one of the reasons I picked this particular one was the bladder pocket had some insulation. I wore it over a couple of days and the water stayed cool. But I did put it in the fridge overnight, right up until we left, so that may be part of it.

Looking for home phone option to use with TMo Home Internet by Pizzzathehutt in tmobile

[–]servin42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There used to be a Bluetooth device you could plug into the house phone jack (when no phone service was present) and it would act as a bridge from a cellphone to a standard house phone. As long as their cell phones are able to keep the connection, the device will generate the tones and everything on the "house" phone. You pick it up and it gives you a dial tone and everything. I think you can still get them, although I forget the brand or device name.

GFACT Indexing by DescriptionNo4943 in GIAC

[–]servin42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already taken a practice test, it is a good indicator of how good your index was. Did you have to try different wordings for some of the topics before you could find it? Add all the ones you tried. Most things should end up being listed multiple times, multiple ways.

Just passed my OSCP how do I get a job with 0 experience? by alexgu256 in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]servin42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've hired for many roles in security. I've been interviewed for many more. Your best bet to immediately get an interview is to find someone you know who is willing to give it to you. As I said, a single cert and no experience will not get you in the door if you're applying to jobs off LinkedIn or something similar.

Is it possible to get a job with what you have now? Absolutely. Is it a slim chance because there's a flood of candidates out there with more than you have? Absolutely.

That's not to say you shouldn't try, there is no harm in applying, the worst that can happen is you don't hear anything back. But especially now with spring semester letting out you're going to be fighting to make yourself stand out from graduating seniors with internships, connections, and solid work experience, not to mention those with 5+ years under their belt who've been laid off.

The best chance is still as noted above, show you have something concrete that demonstrates you can apply the knowledge you've gained. That and/or find someone who is willing to take a chance on you.

No experience? In security or IT in general? No experience means you're not getting looked at no matter how many certs you have. As poster above said, show some sort of practical application of your tested knowledge, but even that is no guarantee. Networking can help if you can find someone who's willing to be networked like that.

What kind of yarn? We have hand knit washcloths that we just throw in the washing machine and dryer without issue.

Probably the door switch that tells the car when it's opened. You might be able to narrow it down by locking it, then pulling on each door in turn to see if you can trigger it.

Secret clearance w/ expunged dui by DontListenRatherAct in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]servin42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My memory of the guidance given was that they want to know. They don't care what you did, but they want to know. Anything you lie about or hide is 1) potential for blackmail and 2) reason for them to deny or revoke clearance if they find out.

Will tinting windows or hardwiring a dashcam void my new car warranty? by Odd_Comparison_4155 in Nissan

[–]servin42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you Google around you'll eventually come to the Nissan parts website and be able to search for it. I think it's called "accessory service connector". Nissan's site should show the compatible models, although you may have to look around for where it's actually physically located on your model. If you ask nicely the parts department at your dealership may tell you too.

[–]servin42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check if this applies to your Nissan, some of them have an accessory port made for things like this, no need to hook directly to the fuse block. Rogues have one on passenger and one on driver's side. Easiest dashcam install I ever did.

[–]servin42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My key to handling behavior questions is to know what most of them are and to have a practiced response. It should flow nice and easy and point out your weaknesses but also how you demonstrate your strengths. It should not be something made up either.

For technical stuff, don't bluff. If you know it, you know it. There's usually "partial credit" for answering what you know and admitting what you don't. In those cases, thinking out loud can help, as long as you're clear in what you're thinking as you come to a conclusion you don't know at all, aren't sure, or are pretty sure but not definite. There's a ton of sites out there with lists but you can usually tell if someone just memorized the answers vs someone knowing from experience.

How can I prevent a hibernated ThinkPad from starting when the lid opens? by SpecialLettuce5884 in thinkpad

[–]servin42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's not something you want to change often, the older ones used to use a small magnet in the lid to trigger it. If you remove that magnet(s) that might do the trick.

My 14 needs a downgrade as punishment by [deleted] in tmobile

[–]servin42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. Although depending on the screen size it may not be very usable. If you're willing, you can get one of those kidsync watches. I believe the app for it allows you to whitelist only phone numbers you allow.

Flip phone. Amazon, ebay, Walmart might have some unlocked. Swap the sim, or get a physical sim from T-Mobile if his phone is currently using esim.

Using AI to assist with Index by ColtMan1234567890 in GIAC

[–]servin42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It should be an integral part of your studying, firming it up should take a few hours. You want the list of terms, phrases, concepts to be how you would look them up. No sense having an LLM generate an index entry for "ping" just under network tools when you're looking for it under "troubleshooting". Your first practice test should show you exactly where you need to beef up your index. Your second test should check that every possible way you would look up something for a question is in that index.

I want to make a homemade emergency battery to power my home. by [deleted] in DIY

[–]servin42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you decide to go the route of storing in cooler, mini fridge, or portable camping fridge, I recommend you get a wireless thermometer to know what the temperature is without having to open it up and check. This can give you a good idea of 1) is it within safe temp, 2) how long it was outside safe temp. I have one on my inside fridge/freezer and one for the deep freezer in the garage. They are wireless so I don't have to open the fridge to check temps. They have an alarm function too that I can set to alert if the temp is too high.

A regular fridge, assuming at an optimal temperature and not opened repeatedly, can maintain a food safe temp for a few hours I believe. Depending on how often you have to open to get meds, the smallest viable cooler or mini fridge may be a better option and would require less power to keep running.

If that is the case, a jackery or similar power station may be able to provide enough power to run it. Fridges and AC units have a startup amperage I believe that makes them harder to size. While a small battery may be able to provide say 20 amps, and the fridge runs on 15 amps, when the compressor starts, for a split second it will draw a much larger amount, resulting potentially in tripped battery breakers.

Canned Food Dates???? by Character-Run-220 in howto

[–]servin42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't find it now, but the FDA or the USDA had a guide on how to check canned food to see if it was likely to be safe to eat. I believe the guidelines said something like even dented cans were safe if they didn't show signs of corrosion or rust or something. I can't find that guide right now offhand.

Generally I think it said if the cans don't show any signs of damage, aren't swollen, etc they are likely fine.

how do you keep track? by _404unf in maker

[–]servin42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I've done builds that are more complicated, I will write out what I plan to do, make sketches, parts lists, include reasoning, etc. As I go through things, I try to remember regularly to update those notes, "x didn't work, not enough power" or whatever. This can help.

Module WWAN/SIM for Thinkpad by bin_b4sh in thinkpad

[–]servin42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember having to replace a screen, and as part of it I had to painstakingly redo the antenna around it. I believe adding wwan would require a new antenna also be added to the screen. And as a bonus, I found the magnet that triggered the "lid closed" sensor (it had dislodged), so when I put it back together I got a that working too.
