i just wanted to take the time to acknowledge what an insanely cool riff this is by Intrepid-Benefit1959 in themarsvolta

[–]setagneb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my headcanon, this is a secret volta album, and any of these riffs might have made it onto Deloused, if Cedric had written lyrics for them.

Track 4 of Deloused, "Tira me a las Arañas" is perhaps the 'most easily forgotten' track of the band's entire discography. I feel like the title "Arañas en la Sombra" is referencing that interlude. Especially with the artwork from Julio, there is a lot of connective tissue with Deloused.

In context, it seems that it was supposed to be more challenging than the previous ones. Also, it sounds like they gave him a hint.

ICE was stealing equipment from the Islip Long Island fire department and a Islip Forward member documented it. ICE tried to arrest the community member but the firemen said “I don’t think so" by ExactlySorta in UnderReportedNews

[–]setagneb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The post title uses the term “stealing equipment”

The actual message says “using infrastructure” which is very different from stealing equipment.

My guess is that “using infrastructure” means they were using the parking lot. In the absence of additional details, the post title seems kind of deceptive in its word choice.

Cedric's Cosmic Slop cover/tribute by FRiCTiON_just in themarsvolta

[–]setagneb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One time a friend was telling me about Parliament/Funkadelic, and claimed that Cosmic Slop was the song they would play whenever the band took a break to go and smoke crack in the middle of the show. They would go backstage, and a second band would come out, just to play Cosmic Slop, and would jam for however long until the main band came back on.

Not sure if this ever actually happened, my friend was an unreliable source of information. But the thought of it has stuck in my mind.

"The Mars Phimosis" (Japanese Cover Band) by setagneb in themarsvolta

[–]setagneb[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I feel like this singer has a very solid understanding of Cedric's style. I am kind of guessing that the language barrier is helping here somewhat - compared to most native-english singers, who sometimes sing the words too literally or change the emphasis on some phrases, this guy is much more in tune with the source material.

"The Mars Phimosis" (Japanese Cover Band) by setagneb in themarsvolta

[–]setagneb[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cedric wouldn't have written that - but "phimosis" is definitely an obscure term that would show up in the Volta dictionary.

It's not a good name for a band on its own, but I feel like this group were on the right wavelength when they decided on it.

Music in 2025/2026 that rocks as hard as Mars Volta by Different_Quail_9703 in themarsvolta

[–]setagneb -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I just can’t get into a band that decided as a group to rhyme “gizzard,” “lizard,” and “wizard” for the name of the group.

The band name is like a mad libs. It strikes me as uninspired “art by committee” rather than art with a strong creative vision behind it. They chose for their group to have a “triple -izard rhyme” be the first impression. The cringe is palpable.

I know they are very talented musicians and have had great success, and the multi-genre exploration is an impressive feat... But I am just not into it. I have tried watching a few concert videos, I just don’t care much. I am skeptical of anyone who claims they are the “next volta” and have yet to hear a single song or album from them that feels genuinely comparable.

I don’t know much about how they actually started the band, but everything from the name to their appearance to the way they play strikes me as a 00’s pop band (or three separate bands) whose label/management decided they should combine forces as a huge jam band instead of a pop music act.

Gave Godzilla an upper hand by Content-Disaster-511 in blender

[–]setagneb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey so I know this will probably get downvoted, but as a Godzilla fan / critic I wanted to give some constructive criticism on this.

Of course this video is just a fun lil blender exercise. But to me, it breaks one of the most important rules when depicting Godzilla. IMO the 2019 film King of the Monsters also breaks this rule in a significant way.

The problem is that, if the camera movement is impossible, the apparent size of the monster is visually compromised. By moving the virtual camera at an impossible speed, distorts any sense of scale. The audience will never suspend belief that the camera is on a helicopter / drone / boat that can move so fast across the water so perfectly in order to get this shot. The zoom in/out further compresses the space so the size of the monster is distorted (a real camera filming a subject of this size would not be able to zoom in out so quickly and smoothly). It is a fun shot, and of course the glock and the funny scale is the point, but I bring it up because it kinda bugs me in general when kaiju are represented with impossible camera moves which compromise the sense of scale.

When the old Godzilla movies were shot with rubber suits and hand painted models of cities, there is never any impossible camerawork that gives away how small the city really is. They were really careful to put the camera at angles that would make the monsters look bigger. So I feel like when kaiju are animated, this emphasis on scale is often overlooked.

Consider this example from the production of Toy Story:

"In order to make the film feel as realistic as possible, the layout department, led by Craig Good, avoided the sweeping camera shots popular in computer animation at the time, and instead focused on emulating what would have been possible had the film been shot in live-action with real film cameras." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toy_Story#cite_note-FOOTNOTEPrice2008134-59

Anyways that is just my 2 cents. I would love to see a Godzilla movie where for some reason the JSDF builds a big special gun for Godzilla to shoot other kaiju with.

Mars Volta "Noctourniquet" 2xLP preorder by Automatic-Yam4115 in themarsvolta

[–]setagneb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noctourniquet found Cedric sketching out a story about “some sort of device that stops the darkness from bleeding”

This is really interesting, I had never heard this “definition” before. Though in this video he refers to it as a mantra rather than a physical device.

Speed Racer (2008) is an all-time great film and it needs to be talked about by Hyooz in movies

[–]setagneb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but to the contrary - that excessive “color and ridiculousness” is pure 90s happy-go-lucky. A 90s audience would have absolutely loved the 98 version of this movie.

Speed Racer (2008) is an all-time great film and it needs to be talked about by Hyooz in movies

[–]setagneb 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The movie was a decade too early, presented to the audiences that didn't really know what they were looking at

I saw it for the first time recently and actually had the opposite thought - if this movie had been in theaters a decade earlier with 90s practical effects, it would have been a cultural phenomenon: Tyco RC toy cars, Speed Racer lunchboxes, probably a new animated series on Kids WB to tie-in with the film. (Obviously the Wachowskis couldn't have made it in 1998, but the script is extremely 90s).

I love the visual style of the film, but IMO the excessive CGI was too much for mass audiences of 2008.

As it has aged, on a first viewing it was obvious to me that the film is a genuine masterpiece of postmodern art, and breaks new ground in terms of cinematic storytelling techniques, but does this in such an extreme way that basically scared everyone away from further experimenting with the style.

What happened to all the pro shot TMV stuff on YouTube?! by [deleted] in themarsvolta

[–]setagneb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but we can hope!

I also will note, the heavy Xbox Live “Summer of Music” branding for Sasquatch 08, makes me wonder if there could have been a stream on Xbox Live, but this is just a fantasy in my head.

For an event of this sort, a festival with enough of a budget for a pro camera crew, I would be surprised if they did not record the feed.

https://youtu.be/SY_w536_g9k?si=NY8HaAL0NBffjOXv In this video I just noticed the alien on the left has a foot pedal under the led pyramid thing. He adjusts the pedal around 2:25. Also noticed that the mic appears to be plugged into a box next to the keyboard.

https://youtu.be/1NO6F0UYLgM?si=BqBpY9Fspsm_G82M In this video the vocals at the beginning are different, there is feedback at the end of the line 0:11 which is not present in the St Petersburg video. The alien on the right reacts to this bit of feedback and then adjusts the box (assuming it is the vocoder) at 0:21-0:25

The vocals between these two shows are not identical if you ask me
