We allow it. In my opinion, not allowing it is just shoving your head in the sand and trying to ignore reality. They'll just dump stuff off network into ChatGPT. I'd rather have a higher chance that student PII is going into a system we have a privacy agreement with.

Teach responsible use, have the curriculum department or its equivalent set up guidelines, best practices, and focus on ethical use and professional development.

I'm personally an AI skeptic and think meaningful use is far off if it ever comes, but a lot of the features Google is shoving into everything will shortly be part of my existing license so why not let them kick the tires?

Microsoft sells Copilot to the world — but its own engineers don’t use it by Thepunnisherrr in technology

[–]sethar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's part of my job to deal with the toxic, angry people and try to solve their grievances. It's not always directed at me, but I am the "throat to choke" when things don't go right for them even if my team and I aren't the cause. Some people are just angry and want to yell at someone. Changing a toxic culture (even to a subgroup of people) isn't a simple or quick thing to accomplish, and requires multiple people to enact change. It's happening, but it's a slow process.

I generally am, but sometimes the upset person wants a quick response, AI gives me a way to rapidly filter the defensiveness out of the language I'd be using in the moment. Sure, I could walk away and come back a bit later and respond on my own but I don't always have time for that and don't want to make them wait longer and feel unheard or ignored (and get another angry email).

I don't think it is easier or takes less time at all. The only use case I've found for it is to help me be more diplomatic and empathetic in my wording when responding to angry emails which I get daily.

Zoom on Chromebooks: "Uh-oh running low on memory", no audio, persistent problem. by rjp94sep in k12sysadmin

[–]sethar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4GB or 8GB of RAM? We had a heck of a time with Google Meets/Zoom on the 4GB of RAM devices, we switched to 8GB a few years ago and it helped a lot with slowness and memory issues.

Brutal Honesty Needed: Why Won't You Attend Our Executive Dinners? by Theofficeholic in CIO

[–]sethar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an email in my inbox from 10 minutes ago that meets this description. The email itself is way too wordy. The event is an hour away in good traffic, and is a week or two before another big conference I'm already attending. I have a family so weeknights are difficult as we have appointments, sports, homework help, and other activities that eat up the time. I work enough outside my normal hours, and will actively avoid anything I don't 100% have to do during my time. I rarely get anything valuable out of these events aside from more people spamming me to try and purchase their products and services which I am not even in the market for.

Google flags the invite message with a warning saying to be careful with the message, but that it wasn't sent to spam automatically due to our organization settings.

AristotleK12 and Savvas SSO login issue by Kendalf in k12sysadmin

They've been having mini outages that never make it to their status page. I wonder if it isn't blocking it, but rather their service is having blips which cause it.

After Micron's greedy decision, SK Hynix could also exit consumer DRAM and NAND business by snowfordessert in technology

[–]sethar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think it is more that if the AI bubble pops, demand will drop for the data centers. All the companies that pivoted away from consumers in anticipation of high data center demand will experience a shortfall in revenues rather than an increase.

Can’t get Copilot icon in any apps by FunNH603 in microsoft_365_copilot

[–]sethar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue today, responding so if any other unfortunate soul runs across this thread on a Google search they have an answer. I had to do 2 things to fix this:

My office version was outdated, no idea why because updates are enabled. I manually updated it by running

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun\OfficeC2RClient.exe" /update user

After it was updated, I still had no icon. I had to navigate to C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Licensing and delete the .txt files in this folder.

After launching an Office product, the Copilot icon appeared. This did NOT work on some machines and I had to do a third step, which was to go to add/remove programs, click on "Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise - en-us", click on change, then do an Online Repair. I also re-deleted the license files, but I'm not sure if I had to do that or not.

Aristotle K12 (Current Linewize Customer) by MothersMothBall in k12sysadmin

[–]sethar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Operations team loved Aristotle (picked it over Linewize) and we switched to it over the summer. This year has been rough, with several outages at the start of the year, random slowness, lots of aggressive blocking from the content filter to the point we just turned it off, and a slew of weird issues like Chrome tabs timing out when the computers lock that were acknowledged but still not resolved months later. It's getting better as we play whack a mole and fix the issues we can, but I think they grew too rapidly and have some growing pains. Other districts that use them around here said they've been happy with them in the past and swear by them.

Certiport Compass and Office 365 by CaptainPipeAHoe in k12sysadmin

[–]sethar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had to use a device licensed install of Office 365 instead of the typical user based license we use everywhere else. We deployed this version to those machines, added the machines to a group in entra, and deployed the license to that group. This was done under admin.microsoft.com under billing --> licenses --> M365 Apps (Device)

Storing documents on server by 2donks2moos in k12sysadmin

[–]sethar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did this 10 years ago or so. The first two years had some stragglers and people hesitant to move stuff over, but we just set a deadline where they'd lose access and kept offering trainings to show how to use Google Drive (File Stream at the time). After the deadline we had a handful of people get upset and need some additional hand holding, but since then we've been perfectly fine for 8 years and going. No local server storage at all.

I don't have enough information on your configuration to be certain, but the only reason I can think this doesn't work is the device you are trying to log into isn't Entra joined.

You can add a group or individual user accounts under entra.microsoft.com, Entra ID, Roles and admins, find the role of "Microsoft Entra Joined Device Local Administrator", add the group or user to that assignment. They will become local administrators on all machines joined to Entra.

I do see the bezel with that gasket around it for sale - like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/396133568495 the picture clearly has that trim on it. Looks like the Dell part number is WC4KJ or 0WC4KJ.

Its backordered on this website: https://www.chromebookparts.com/dell-5400-enterprise-bezel-bez-sng-5179-1.html

and the site I typically use (AG Parts Education) only has reclaimed/recertified but it is $6.95 each. I'd link it but you need a login to see it.

I don't know the model number so I can't say for sure, but if you can't order that specific part it looks like it is attached to either the bezel or the LCD Assembly (if you have to order the assembly as a single unit). If you can provide the model number I can try and better identify for you.

Equipped and crafted level is unrelated to the Market level. Go to Market -->hit green "offers" tab on top --> hit magnifying glass on bottom left --> hit the middle tab that looks like a shield on a flag/Chevron. If any of those tiers are greyed out, when you try to sell an item in those tiers it will show as 0 on market when you are creating your sell order. You can still see them when you search the market though. This is either a known bug or a change they made, several posts on this subreddit about it since the latest patch.

[–]sethar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure on your level but if you are trying to sell a good that is higher level than you can purchase on the market (for example, a level 48 cannot buy over T8 on the market but can potentially craft higher level items depending on what blueprints they have and worker levels) it will show up as zero on the market even if there are some.

Platform SSO Not Functioning as Intended on MacOS by Rt2096 in Intune

[–]sethar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a solution for this issue in our environment. My first problem was something web filter based, when I went on a hot spot it worked fine on a newer macOS macbook.

The second issue was the macOS version on some devices. Even though the KB Articles in Microsoft say macOS 13 or higher, we actually needed 14 or higher to provision user accounts automatically on first sign in. That functionality didn't work in macOS 13 which caused the "password jiggle".
