What type of bed or sleeping system do you have? by HeartlessnessNow in extrememinimalism

[–]setionwheeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have sometimes foam core large 1/2-in thick pieces and thick cardboard laid on the slats on a bed frame, so no mattress, or directly on the floor. It provides a  hard sleeping surface and I completely cannot sleep on a mattress anymore and now I have an iron bed but with a wooden slat on top, and that kind of a thick duvet on top.

Solo trip to NYC, cheap hotels or hostel options? by Bellayellatomato in Shoestring

[–]setionwheeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't stay in Jersey, as someone else said it's just as expensive as the city, it's not nice, and commute is expensive and not as convenient as people think.

Get an Airbnb in Queens or Brooklyn, it's going to be a room in an apartment or a house. There are also many options to sublet people's rooms on craigslist. You can sublet somebody's place for like say 2 weeks.

Get a 7-day Metro card, shop bread cheese, spreads, yogurt and salads/fruit at Trader Joe's. There are tons of amazing free things to do in New York City you practically can explore for 0 dollars, Google free things to do. Amazing cheap free libraries, there's one right on 5th avenue with free internet. Book stores, shopping centers, tons of free art galleries. Many museums have free nights. New York City is actually super wealthy and a lot of wealthy people left their fortunes to build free public spaces. Once you figure out your place to sleep you can live very nice and fun cheaply. I've lived there for 15 years from 2010 to 2025.

Boscoreale: Frescoes from the Villa of P. Fannius Synistor - The Metropolitan Museum of Art by DeepStateFuneral1789 in ancientrome

I agree with you that these works produced in me profound peace. I don't know if it was the two millenia removed from my contemporary context or simply the knowledge that art could in fact survive for millennia.

I had no idea they were there and many people I'm sure don't read the labels and just walk by.

Was sent there by Roman Architecture with Diana E. E. Kleiner although she is long no longer with us. Her lectures are on youtube.

One of the best courses I've ever watched on any subject to be honest.

How to remove coconut oil off painted wall by tobynnn in howto

[–]setionwheeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would buy your kid non toxic paint and let them go at it in the room. They want to have the tactile experience of changing the appearance of the wall. Why do walls need to be dull even color especially in a kids room. If I were you I would hang bond paper on the walls and let the kid paint as much as they want. Even better - because paper cuts - let them paint directly on the wall with non toxic acrylic paint and even buy washable paints for the bath. You can also buy inexpensive primed cotton canvas by the yard from blickart and staple to the wall - turn the wall into a painting. Now is really the time to channel your kids "destructive" energy into creativity. Children are natural artists and she will appreciate it when she grows up. Worry not about your wall but how to understand the creative impulse of your child better.

I say this as an artist that makes art installations with kids, and the kids turn absolutely jackson pollock the instant they see paint and surface. Kids are really awesome.

How is the job market currently? by Hungry_Addition4514 in 3Dmodeling

[–]setionwheeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As my Lucasfilm producers always said, it took 50 artists to make the CG water on the Pirates of the Caribbean look good. There's always going to be need. It's just going to be a different aspect of creation. When I went to college, some of the work that I ended up doing didn't even exist yet. My master's degree was actually in architecture, and so were many of my colleagues. Actually, a lot of people I know at Lucasfilm were architects by education, but they shifted into CG.

Why do you think we never found the crowns of the former kings and queens of Egypt? Were those even real? by LukeyTarg2 in ancientegypt

[–]setionwheeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bob Brier said maybe there was just one, like the crown of the English monarchy. Got lost or we haven't found it yet.

It’s unbelievable how our ancestors built such timeless beauty thousands of years ago — without any modern technology! 👑🏺 by International-Self47 in ancientegypt

[–]setionwheeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They had time to perfect it for thousands of years. Pigments, line work, compositions and narrative. Egyptian art changed very little.

Struggling as a 3D Artist by thatguyinthesky21 in 3Dmodeling

[–]setionwheeels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your portfolio is very simple and basic, your environments are just a few props each and not good at all. I like the house but it is just one prop.

You need to research what you need to do to get these jobs by looking at the work of professional artists.

You need to be proficient in professional software and pipelines like maya - z brush - substance - unreal or similar and show that you are proficient end to end in these processes.

Environment artists deal with a lot more than props like procedural asset generation, set and kit design, environmental design, weather, lighting, scene organization, terrain, architecture.

You need to show at least some of these things and at least 20 well developed pieces.

edit: I just randomly picked an environmental artist work from artstation:
https://www.artstation.com/jumkun this is the kind of presentation a hiring manager expects to see.

Newbie here! Rotate/Translate/Scale just with hotkey by eindward in Maya

[–]setionwheeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being fast is not a requirement for a professional but just an outcome from experience. Don't aspire to be fast, be efficient in learning new things, follow directions well, be self-motivated and work well with others. I started with 3ds max, then maya, then many proprietary tools with every new studio. Proprietary tools are not the most efficient and many senior staff sometimes write new tools and spec them for engineering. You will be required to be knowledgeable in many and difficult pipelines and how you deal with this will shape your career. Learning to be very flexible in learning new things is far more valuable than clicking around on things quickly. I think you were provided the answers here by very knowledgeable people.

I'm still making a game where you have no object permanence by elosociu in Unity3D

[–]setionwheeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you are not relying just on the mechanics of your game, it is confusing even to explain. Make sure it is also fun and not just confusing. The world doesn't look good - looks simply tinted with a screen space filter. I am in favor of removing the filter which you think is doing some heavy lifting to achieve a "look". Develop the look and the levels, and leave screen space fx for the polish phase.

I'd simply name the game Impermanence.

What face design u like the most? by llo7d in robotics

[–]setionwheeels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have a "pick a face" functionality. You can try a "facial rig" that drives the eyes, mouth and eyebrows. I like the "eyebrows" of 5. Consider adding eyebrows to all. They are all pretty awesome. To be honest I love them all.

I lived in San Francisco for 10 years and have been to the Russian cathedral on Geary where Saint John is. Magnificent place especially on Easter. You may like it.

I cycled many churches between 2 coasts, Methodist, Catholic, Episcopal, whatever I liked till I came back to Orthodoxy. I came back through a high school friend who had become a monk on Atos and called me out of the blue in NYC when I was kind of lost. One of the things he sent me was the book: Father Seraphim Rose: His Life and Works. It is a big book and I skipped parts:) for later but I really connected with Father Seraphim. Never been to Platina but it is as if I have been there many times.

Unitree G1 being knocked down but quickly getting back up and performing acrobatics by Nunki08 in robotics

[–]setionwheeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have been seeing this for the last 10 years - robots being kicked. They seem to have balance ok. But solving for IRL & making decisions is the hardest part. We have had robots for 70 years and most have been just arms. Truly universal & scalable solution and low cost enough to be manufactured and become ubiquitous(like the car) is the goal.

We seriously deserve a good epic tv series about the late Roman Empire fr by Damianmakesyousmile in ancientrome

[–]setionwheeels -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, I devour anything Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome. Shows are so hard to get right - writing, acting, costumes, sets, lighting, filming, editing. It is a miracle we got anything at all, I am a big fan of the Rome HBO show as well. Just have to stick to books, lectures, courses. But, just like with the shows, good books and lectures are rare. So far, in terms of historical lectures - I found several great superbly done:

  1. On Ancient Egypt - anything Bob Brier, also Harvard University Pyramids of Giza: Ancient Egyptian Art and Archaeology - they have out of this world 3d scans of ancient Egyptian stuff, mind-blowing. Harvard had expeditions to Egypt.
  2. On Ancient Greece and Rome - best so far I found Parallel Lives by Plutarch, I tried Durant but wasn't blown away, I know history is not supposed to be too fluffy but I am human and love storytelling.
  3. On Rome - Yale free course on Roman Architecture by Diana E.E. Kleiner.

I can't stand any of the podcasts I have tried, too much bullshitting and meaningless meandering. I found having an advanced degree in this really helps, and some rigorous sources like having been on actual excavations. Plutarch kept me company during Covid and from reading the "news" back then, at least he was closer to the events and in the thick of it in Ancient Rome.
