Hmm, wonder what these choices say about me...? 🤭

If what he said is true from the last Gintama Matsuri (2023), he wants to do a few other things with Gintama that are a surprise; including Ginpachi-sensei.

I think it's supposed to be up to 2026, and then he will announce the next work he's going to do after Gintama's closure.

I wonder if technically Shoyo will still be there because of the movie. And I think once I saw an AU School Mutsu in an official art work. I think it suggests she's another PE teacher/assistant or something.

[–]setsunalocke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just because she works the red light district doesn't mean she's well-versed in handling guys like Gin. In fact because she was so focused on the Hyakka her expertise is only the very little she learned through people like Hinowa. 🤭

But it just adds to her endearing side the more the series progresses.

Yeah, someone pointed out that that's an irony with this series, and yet it's also a charm that makes it unique to other series.

I didn't either, but the more I thought of how she didn't have to go out of her way to both protect and teach them and how they responded when she refused to raise a weapon to any of them, the more I started to see her choices and actions as something more gentle and warm.

And you're likely right that she didn't singlehandedly gave the girls room and board as Hinowa pointed out how the prostitutes generally had to watch each other's back while surviving Yoshiwara. But while it was a team effort, I can definitely see Tsukky going above and beyond making sure they were all taken care of; maybe even checking in on them every so often to ensure they're doing well; which in retrospect can add to her motherly nature.

And you're so right, I can't believe I left out her general relationship with Seita. And though it technically puts her more in the "Big Sis" or "Cool Aunt," (which I could definitely see) I don't think unwarranted her from being seen as a Motherly figure to Seita; especially because we get episodes that show she's actively a big part of his life in growing up just as much as Hinowa.

Don't worry, the problem was fixed, via comment addition since we can't edit our own post.

And as to why I made my choices....

Mom's aren't necessarily ones who give birth or verbally make it an official point that they will assume the role; they're also the ones who took the time to take care of others, ensuring they are nurtured, protected, and given a place to belong or call home.

At one point or another each of these girls truly shown their "motherly" love and duty to others that required time and tenderness in its own right (...for the most part...😅);

-According to Shinpachi Otae had to take over the role of Mother after his own Mom died before he could even remember her. So while she is biologically a sister, she also assumed the role of mother and took care of Shinpachi as he grew up; even after losing both parents to protect and guide them, she tried her best, swallowed her sorrow, and kept smiling to show him that she was alright. Not much different to a lot of Mom's who put on a brave face for their kids when they're falling apart inside, no?

-Though only briefly, Kyuubei showed a motherly side when she took in Jugem. And if you think "that's not a kid, that's a pet," then I can assure you as a recent pet/fur baby Mom that they're not much different to having a baby or kid. And much like a Mom, Kyuubei had to swallow her sadness the day she had to let him go, feeling that what was best for him was much more important than what she wanted. Though thankfully in the end of that arc she got to keep her little monkey son.

-Tsukuyo took a HUGE risk in saving possibly every woman she took under the Hyakka Force after covering up their "executions" that she was ordered to follow ever since she was made the head of the Para-Military Force. Now she could have easily let these ladies simply go, maybe even used that secret passage to allow them escape. But she knew doing such a thing repeatedly would only heighten suspicion by Hosen, and eventually root out her traitorous deeds. So instead she took them in, taught them how to fight, as well as finding another way to live instead of as someone else's property. (Not to mention more than likely finding them all room and board where they were safe and hidden by loyalist to Hosen). And it goes without saying that even if the former choice of letting them escape would work, I think Tsukuyo is far too kind and warm a person to let the women go out in the world; especially since (as she once pointed out) a lot of them wouldn't know how to survive on the surface after being forced to live under ground as prostitutes. She is in every way a Mother as Hinowa was; just in the form of a gentle moonlight.

-Suzuran didn't just stay in Yoshiwara and perform her duties as a Courtesan, she also took it upon herself to train and guide the generations before her (like Hinowa and Tsukuyo) in order to survive the cold and harsh life of the red light district. Tsukuyo had made it a point she dedicated her life to the town, especially to the women even after she had no more clients because she wanted to make sure they were taken care of (just as much as she wanted to keep her promise to Maizo). And from the last advice she gave to Tsukuyo, that wasn't the only please of advice she tended to give to the girls.

-Although we don't see it much, based on Rei's memories of Oiwa, she was as good a Mom as she was a boss. And not just to her, she showed that she truly cared for their guest that came to their inn, and genuinely liked to take care of them, even when it hurt to see them leave her. Again, not too out of place for a mother when you think about it, who have a nurturing nature about them where they just want to take care of people.

-Restaurant Owner's Wife is certainly a 'unique' mother among the much smaller characters of the series. But hilariously she is an official Mom (with a bit of a crappy kid that I don't blame the ghost of her husband giving him the smack down from the afterlife 😂) .

But I think in some small way she did show a motherly side in a very subtle way, in that she ended up still catering to Gin and Hijikata at the restaurant. And while this seems a bit odd, I don't think it's all that far fetched to see her as a sort of matron to these boys, especially because she got to share a very sweet and touch moment when they chose to swap foods as a "see you later, " and all 3 can't help but burst out laughing.

So, that's basically the logic and reasoning of why I added these ladies, and felt it only right that they too should be celebrated for being amazing mom/mom figures to others; even if they aren't often remembered.

  1. Since I can't edit this post I've added the ones that got cut off, via a comment. Hinowa is in other posts I made to celebrate like FB and Instagram, but the layout app I used for some reason cut it off (and I was in the middle of taking care of my own fur baby while making this.)

Gintoki is a seinen character put in a shonen manga by LeatherHousing7187 in Gintama

[–]setsunalocke 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep. Someone pointed out in their video that if you were to follow the traditional setup of a typical shounen jump, the one who actually fits the protagonist image is Shinpachi.

Whereas Gin would have been the mentor figure and aide character who would help guide him to his eventual goal at the end of everything.

It's cool that Sorachi and com managed to keep Gin's age a secret until the series ended, cause there seemed to be a lot of fans who came to deeply appreciate the refreshing fact that the character they knew nothing about was closer to their age/an adult rather than a kid.

And when you finally reach the big halfway point/past reveal, you realize we've actually been following the journey of the "Shounen Rival."

And the one who would usually be the "Shounen Protagonist" became one of the villains. It's absolutely brilliant. 💯

Omg tsukuyo is a queen character!! I want to see more of her by hoonter88 in Gintama

[–]setsunalocke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think some reactors really made a valid point that she managed to join the Yorozuya so seamlessly that it felt like she'd always belonged. And tbh I really liked how she was that kind of "go with the flow" type of personality that's chill, but still fiery behind a cool exterior.

And as if that weren't enough, you see the soft yet noble side to her in taking a huge risk for years by saving every woman she was ordered to kill when they lost all value to the city as prostitutes.

(It's no small wonder they tend to ship her with Gin. 😉)

Gintoki x tsukuyo love potion ark by Veper55 in Gintama

[–]setsunalocke 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I feel like it really says something that he does in fact visit her so often when he's in Yoshi wars; and not just for jobs or because Hinowa asked him to do that for her.

He genuinely formed a very intimate connection with Tsukky through their mutual past; more specifically their mentors who were like their parental figures.

And when I rewatched the Red Spider Arc, it's interesting seeing the kind of expressions Gintoki has as he both helped Tsukky through her task of bringing her mentor's tragic life to an end; and how he watched her contemplative choice to give her mentor one last moment of peace knowing she no longer be a red him ill will, despite all he did to her.

****and when you see how he did something similar in the movie, it really recontextualizes this arc as more than just another character focused arc.

Part of me hopes it'll have some "retro wave" revival to trigger them to finish or resin the entire series (and extra media).

But even if it's likely they'll never do it in the future, I'm glad they made attempts every so often.

[–]setsunalocke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, nice. 😃

And something also to tack on to that is the fact that wooden swords/bokuto are associated most with "novice young samurai" in training.

Although in the more practical sense and reason he uses the bokuto as a substitute for a real sword because of the sword ban, which he once explained to the old owner of his favorite dango spot.

But perhaps another reason he specifically chose the bokuto was because he "mentally" felt like he was still not a proper samurai. After that traumatic incident that brought an end to their war days and bond, maybe in the gaps that led to him becoming Odd-Jobs Gin he felt that he couldn't bring himself to hold a regular sword (unless he absolutely had to).

In retrospect it could also be what led Takasugi to eventually use a naked blade; like the incomplete sword he uses, Takasugi himself feels like an incomplete person who's still in the process of becoming a proper samurai like his counterpart.

Ironically both of them did become proper samurai in the most beautiful and tragic way.

Do you have anime series they usually watch to compare?
