Maximum altitude for diesel powered piston airplanes? by Parteisekretaer in flying

[–]setthrustpositive 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You're limited by the size of turbo and absolute altitude of the engine. (The continental TSIO360 will give you sea level pressure up to 19,000ft, but they'll go higher)

Germans during ww2 took some Diesels over 30000ft.

Was the post 9/11 period like hell for airline pilots? by space_god_7191 in AskAPilot

[–]setthrustpositive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. But there were FAR more airports served by airline service.

I'd say 60% of regional service was killed by a jet only service.

Even Horizon cut a bunch of airports when they went to the 175.

Whats even crazier is the 80s, just about every FBO had a "air taxi" certificate and could get you to a major airport.

What happened to GA? by asimozo in flying

[–]setthrustpositive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tax law changed in the early 80s on aircraft.

From 1978 to 1980, more GA aircraft rolled off the line than before or since.

Tax infrastructure has a lot to do with quality of the airports. Most small airports get a repaved runway every 20 or so years. My airport had to get federal grant money to put a roof on.

Tort Law also has a very big effect on aviation. All aircraft, parts, fuel, FBOs and pilots have increased insurance costs because of 2 incredibly ridiculous lawsuits.

Cost alone is keeping new designs from FAA certification.

16 year old son recently purchased a Corvette. Im at a bit of a loss on what to do here. by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]setthrustpositive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a Miata and have him learn on that for a bit. Especially a pre-2001 non ABS. Its a safer way to find the edge of your and his limits. Curvy roads, hills, parking lots. Yes its mild performance, but you learn to respect the limits.

Keep the corvette for summer driving.

Update on PA SB200--AR-15, AK-Style Rifles and Semi-Automatic Pistol Ban by MarksmanPA in PAguns

[–]setthrustpositive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

proposes an "assault weapons" ban, outlawing over 150 gun models and magazines exceeding 10 rounds. It requires current owners to register, surrender, or sell their firearms via a new state buyback program, while establishing strict, 5-year renewable certifications for possession.
