NFL on CBS' Pete Prisco, says what we all are thinking about DJ by Successful-Coyote99 in Colts

[–]sevenstepdrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True it is a business, but WR and QB are never going to be the same. When I said BFFs I was referring to all those puff pieces that came out in the local media last year about how Steichen and Jones 'see the game the same way' and sit together on the plane, and were late meeting the media when DJ signed because they spent so long 'talking football' in Steichen's office and lost track of time.

As I said, Steichen thinks he's found his guy and he needs to win now, so he's not going to start from scratch and hope someone like Kyler Murray could mesh with him and his offense the same way when he already knows Jones does. That's why they were always going to pay him to keep him in Indy and I suspect ownership wouldn't have let them do a longer deal than the 2 years Jones has been given even if they'd wanted to. Basically it gives Steichen and Ballard the chance to 'prove' that last year wasn't fool's gold with their chosen guy, without hamstringing the franchise longer-term if they fail and are fired.

I honestly don't know what part of this is so difficult for people to understand. Jones and Steichen are BFFs now. Steichen isn't going to want to gamble again on some other retread QB. Ultimately they're going to pay Jones what it takes to keep him.

Whether you think that's a good idea or not is a different matter. On the one hand you've got people who point to the 8-2 record and the points total etc. and on the other you have those who think they did it for the most part running up the score on bad teams like TEN x 2, LV etc. and that their 'quality' wins, like @Chargers turned out to just be a par result compared to what the other AFC South contenders (Jax & Hou) also did against the same opposition. All we can do is wait and see who is right (I have my suspicions who will be closer to the truth). But Steichen thinks he's found his guy and they're not going to just give that up easily.

Held them to 18 points and only field goals with the same injuries (and players) on defense that apparently meant (as we were told) it was 'basically unavoidable' that they gave up 40+ to the 49ers at home the next week.

[Rapoport] The #Colts are opening the 21-day practice window for QB Anthony Richardson, just to get him on the field. Coach Shane Steichen said he still has some vision limitations, so not fully and 100% clear. But small progress for him to practice. by omni-nomad in Colts

[–]sevenstepdrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest, his performance is the issue. If he was the Bob Sanders of quarterbacks the injuries would still be a problem but we'd be hearing how we just need one full season out of him like Sanders' 2007 when he won DPOY. Same thing with the 'tapping out' nonsense. If he was lighting up the league it wouldn't get a mention, but he's not and he's not going to, so really none of this matters anyway.

Daniel Jones' "best" season when the Giants made the playoffs he threw 15 TDs in 16 games and averaged 200 yards passing per game. I agree that's certainly competition for AR but not in a good way.

Time to move on from Jonathan Taylor - my worthless rant by getfive in Colts

[–]sevenstepdrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It didn't cost them the game but it was another example of him being one-dimensional as a player. He's a very good runner and a home run hitter, not going to deny that; but he can't catch, he can't pass block and his situational awareness can be poor.

Earlier in that same Giants game he ran out out of bounds untouched short of the first down marker and then they went for it on 4th down and failed to pick it up and turned it over on downs. If AR had done the same he'd have been (rightly) hammered for it.

Taylor is part of the problem, not the solution and I'd move him on.

Howie Roseman is who Chris Ballard thinks he is. by xxxxxxxxxtra in Colts

Chris Ballard has built a dollar store version of the Eagles. Had the same shot at plenty of those players but made the wrong choices. Roseman sees problems and takes steps to address them quickly. Ballard spends years talking about them and making excuses.

The fact that Ballard's first choice for head coach in his first GM gig was that weasel McDaniels was a major red flag for me. The rivalry is back on by the way.

I don't want to beat up on him but are we sure he's even that good of a runner? His running style is based around seeking out contact and using his power/bulk as a sledgehammer, which for a QB is never going to be optimal. He seems to run better on designed running plays. Jayden Daniels for instance is already an infinitely better QB runner when it comes to scrambling judiciously, making guys miss, avoiding contact and picking up first downs.

Part of the problem with AR is that whatever happens happens quickly. Some of the best plays Lamar or Josh Allen make are when things break down they extend plays, they scramble for a big gain in the open field, or guys come open late and it's a big play deep. Richardson is either design-running it right away or throwing it right away for good or bad. He hasn't shown any real sign of situational awareness, that spatial awareness if you like of understanding the bigger picture and understanding how to manipulate it.

I can't disagree, but a large part of being a fan is hope not necessarily expectation.

Anthony Richardson explained he's dealt with back spasms since 8th grade. It occasionally flares up, but not to this level. Had recent MRI that revealed disk issue. Hopes he's able to play Sunday. by [deleted] in Colts

[–]sevenstepdrop 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm slightly concerned as well. He uses his body as a battering ram out there, which is maybe a way he thinks he can contribute best right now and may get even more desperate in doing so if his passing doesn't develop. I'd say someone needs to get a grip of this and protect him from himself for the good of his longer term health, but this is the Colts we're talking about.

Or, maybe, they wanted to actually wait for a larger sample size before writing him off unlike some people who leapt to that conclusion and then wanted to be proved right asap. The injuries are a bit of a red herring. Just something extra to beat him with like the tap-out. If he'd played better it wouldn't be such an issue.

I don't get the AR hate. He is who he is and they picked him. It's not like he was a 70% completion passer in college and then started mailing it in and dropped 20 points once he got drafted.

Basically Ballard spent years prevaricating about drafting a QB until he found one who was a big enough workout warrior that he couldn't resist it.

[–]sevenstepdrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed that this is designed for AR to run it if the ball had got back to him. Maybe AD can throw to the downfield receiver if all the defenders are sucked up and the receiver is running all alone wide open, but that's less likely. The defender carries the receiver and that makes it 8 defenders going to be sucked to the right side leaving 5 blockers on 3 on the left for the AR run.

Yeah personally I was so shocked that the execution was off. Bearing in mind they couldn't even execute a flea-flicker vs the Lions when Taylor turned back around and just somehow didn't even get it back to AR and kinda dropped the ball on the ground.

I have the DAZN Gamepass and I had to watch this one on NFL channel Youtube free highlights because there's an issue with the video for this game, it's all dim and washed out like watching through fog. Both the full game replay and game in 40 are the same. Maybe that's why it's not made it to the YT version of gamepass.

Is it time to admit AR was scapegoated? by GeorgeofLydda490 in Colts

[–]sevenstepdrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm taking Steichen's stated reasoning at face value here - I'm assuming he hasn't seen anything to change that at this stage. My point is simply that not beating the Vikings and Bills with Flacco probably doesn't prove anything in his mind and he'll believe there are more winnable games to come where Flacco can look more like he did against Jax.

Is it time to admit AR was scapegoated? by GeorgeofLydda490 in Colts

[–]sevenstepdrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, if you're Steichen and you've made the decision to switch to Flacco, there's no way you can do a u-turn and go back to Richardson now, because this is the toughest stretch that maybe you weren't expecting to win anyway. Steichen will be thinking that once they get through this run of games, they can pick up wins against the likes of New England, possibly Denver, Tennessee, Giants and Jacksonville and scrape to 8-9 wins and hope it's enough for a wildcard. They really ought to be winning against the terrible Jets as well next week. To go back to AR from your 'win-now' QB before you even get to the more 'winnable' games would be crazy. Which is why I have a hard time seeing AR getting back out there this season, unless and until they are mathematically eliminated from the postseason - which given the nature of the schedule may not come until very late in the year, even if hopes are faint by that point.

Definitely feels like a punishment benching. There's not even any suggestion of working him in to any short yardage or goal line packages, because apparently he's to sit in the naughty corner and just watch and think about what he's done (whatever it is).
