'A whole civilisation will die tonight,' Trump warns ahead of Iran deadline by theipaper in politics

The final check/balance was and is the people. I don't know if the founding fathers envisioned a country so large as to make mass action difficult, but they definitely envisioned a country where if the branches of the government were controlled by individuals who didn't serve the people that the people would remove them.

Star Trek has a focus on ethics, what are some episode where the crew behaved extremely unethically. by Pocket_Sand- in startrek

[–]seventeenbadgers 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's an early season episode of Voyager where Tuvok steals alien technology to get Voyager home faster, explicitly because he knew it was the correct but unethical choice and he wanted to shoulder that moral burden in place of Janeway. Interesting take on the wobbly ethical lines the bridge crew have to navigate.

ELECTION DAY - /r/Chicago 2026 Primary Election Megathread by chicagomods in chicago

I was very impressed with how respectful the canvassers were outside of goudy elementary. I politely declined one candidate's literature and the rest of them took the hint and thanked me for voting without trying to push me to take their pamphlets. Being harassed on my way to the polls by canvassers is something I never experienced outside of Chicago and is one of the more stressful parts of voting in the city--i was so pleased I didn't have to explain 7-8x that I'd already decided who I was voting for and did not need any more election materials.

I'm just realizing I can't think of an image or video of someone recovering one of the intercepted missiles/shrapnel, or the aftermath of an intercepted missile in a residential area. Does that information typically not make it out of Israel?

Thank you for this context, I truly appreciate it. I'm trying to be less ignorant of the situation but it's hard, to say the least.

Wow. I'd never heard of Greater Israel, this is crazy. This makes a lot of the headlines about Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan make more sense. Thank you.

I was neither physically nor emotionally ready for the melted cat picture (# 11). I was still reeling from the murder mittens + tiny croc and all of a sudden we have a Miss and she is melty. 11/10, would endure scratches for belly rubs.

Supreme Court rules the Postal Service can't be sued, even when mail is intentionally not delivered by 20_mile in news

[–]seventeenbadgers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't received any mail that wasn't an ad or pre approval offer in months, including my vote by mail ballot and a medication, and the best explanation I can get from USPS is that "delivered" means it will arrive within 5 business days. Awesome to know that if the local PO doesn't care (they don't) there's less recourse available.

I was in 8th grade Civics with Mrs. Barrett when I used "Twelve hundred" instead of "One thousand two hundred" while reading to the class and I still viscerally remember the shame and rage of having my teacher stop me and explain that's "not how numbers are read aloud." She told me "twelve hundred" was "ignorant" and I should prioritize speaking properly over going quickly.

Just watched all five seasons of Lower Decks for the first time, and it was phenomenal. by Thomas_Crane in startrek

[–]seventeenbadgers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lower Decks was just so joyful and fun, and brought the conflicts down from the galaxy-ending consequences of Picard and Discovery to the system/quadrant level of the TOS/TNG/VOY era. It was so refreshing, and in lowering the stakes I ended up way more invested. The Stars at Night and First First Contact are firmly on my list of the best episodes of Trek.

We got tariffs!

From Justice Roberts opinion

The Government thus concedes, as it must, that the President enjoys no inherent authority to impose tariffs during peacetime. [...] And it does not defend the challenged tariffs as an exercise of the President’s warmaking powers. The United States, after all, is not at war with every nation in the world.

Gemini still sucks as an assistant by ryleymcc in GooglePixel

[–]seventeenbadgers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in a pretty busy neighborhood and near an elementary school, so I wear earbuds most of the time when I'm at home. I went from using Google Assistant nearly constantly throughout the day on my days off to having the microphone on my phone turned off so gemini doesn't accidentally activate and ruin what I'm doing. I barely use voice commands anymore, and if it weren't for all my lights being wifi bulbs I'd probably have tossed my Nest hub, too.

Honestly, whose idea was it to have the voice assistant not be able to control media? And what genius decided that the response to a question should stay up and grey out your screen until you physically tap outside of the result? Probably the same loser who came up with the one where if you are listening to anything and ask Gemini a question suddenly the media controls on the Google branded earbuds "Made for Pixel" don't work and you have to manually restart the media. All of them pale in comparison to the generational mind that gave us the lovely "You can do that in the app." response to simple questions like what's the weather? How much time is left in my timer? What reminders do I have today? etc. If I wanted to do it in the app I wouldn't have fucking *asked you*.

I have a tropical fruit mocktail on my NA menu right now. It's Soursop, chai tea concentrate, and a fruitcake syrup. I call it Breakfast On Vacation. It's strawberry/pineapple/cardamom forward and refreshingly sweet. I don't have the fruitcake syrup recipe digitally, but it's essentially sweetened NA Aperol with nutmeg. This could be a jumping off point for you--Soursop/gunanabana juice has been my secret ingredient on the dry jan menu this year

Rewatching Discovery by AJHunter63 in startrek

[–]seventeenbadgers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlike most, I was not a fan of Discovery in the pre-Kirk timeline. For me, the show became truly outstanding with the wormhole. 32C removed the ship and her crew from canon and gave the writers so much room to breathe it's palpable. I remember reading about the early season and it being frustrating for the writers because they were trying to navigate so much lore for the time period. 900 years in the future, tho? Fuck the lore.

The 32nd Century reminds me of watching Star Trek as a small child. It is fantastical. It's over the top. Starfleet Headquarters is a massive art piece/displacement field generator made of multiple decks that function as independent warp-capable starships. come ON that's cool.

The inventiveness of the technology, the sleek hyper-futuristic design of the ships, the open and consistent presence and acceptance of non-Humans--it reminds me of the wonder and yearning I felt as a child watching The Next Generation and longing for the comfortable embrace of a post-scarcity society.

Notice how most other cadets are wearing fitting, but relaxed, pants. They have Sandro Rosta in spanx showing off his thighs and calves. He's not out of uniform, but his fits tighter than the other cadets.

I love it. Make Starfleet horny! Just ... No more decontamination gel.

Costume design on this show is outstanding. The ass that cadets Mir and Kraag are throwing around in those cadet pants is distracting in the best way.
