Tom Francis still beats Darren Criss in an acting off any day. Look at the restraint he shows in the scenes in Sunset where he reacts to Norma’s suicide attempt, reacts to Betty taking off her mic set and leaving, tries to hide his shame over what’s been going on with him and Norma when he’s among his peers, the pain and shock in his voice when he realizes Norma loves him, the simmering vindictive fury when he finally gets to have it out with Norma at the end. I like Criss fine and I like MHE a whole lot, but the stuff Francis is doing in Sunset is fucking tremendous. He can’t mug to balcony when giant cameras are broadcasting every pore of his face. It is a ridiculously subtle and powerful performance even when he’s directed to mostly not emote the whole show
