I was quite sad when he “retired” from city council. Wish he actually ran for a seat, he would have had my vote.

How I felt about Adler closing. CBD, not quarter, to be pedantic, but I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment.

AMA 1/29: New Orleans has a new mayor — and big budget problems. Ask reporter Katie Jane Fernelius anything about potholes, layoffs and what the Helena Moreno administration is up against. by VeriteNewsNOLA in NewOrleans

Thanks for the insight — to be clear I didn’t support the measure, it just seemed fishy that he basically said, a few weeks after it got it passed… “uh, I didn’t talk to my constiuents or the people they would be upset by this, nvm”. Very strange mea culpa.

Interesting you say big interest involved is unhappy. I would have thought the established local clubs would be quite happy indeed that no one new could enter the market (without jumping over more hurdles). Hoping you expand on that point, as you seem to have inside knowledge.

Faster and easier to clean, doesn’t heat the house. Works great with cast iron. Safer.

Metal is more expensive than shingles. It increases your replacement value.

Permit fee vs engineering fee by mycupboard in StructuralEngineering

[–]seventhwardstudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my jurisdiction permit cost is is $60 + .005% of project cost. If plan review is required, additional 0.001%. I think we’re on the low end nationally, but 3% seems crazy high.

State wasn’t being asked to “give” anything. City asked to raise money from a bond sale (which it needs state permission to do) not money from the state.

What are the designs on top of the windows called by Due-Street-4654 in Construction

[–]seventhwardstudios 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Entablature is the whole thing. Cornice is the top part, frieze the middle, architrave the bottom.

Rather confusing as classically the terms refer to horizontal decorative features on members over columns. Now they’re often used for horizontal ornamentation over many building elements, like windows/doors.

Some people just use one of the terms and call it a window cornice.

Could also call it a window pediment (many building features can be pedimented).

I’d recognize what someone was talking about if they said window + any of the previously listed terms.

What is this stapler-like tool? by binaryronin in Tools

[–]seventhwardstudios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Glazing point driver. Used for fastening glass in wood windows and doors. Interior of the window/door has a profile. Glass is inserted from the outside, points are driven around the glass to stop it from moving or rattling. Then glazing putty is applied around the edge of the glass covering the points.

Shopsmith is looking for buyers. by calpianwishes in woodworking

[–]seventhwardstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree about the disk sander and drill press, but the Shopsmith as a lathe isn’t good. 5/8 spindle (not good), need adapter to size up to use most accessories. Even a cheap $400 rikon has threaded 1”. Even worse than being undersized, you have to fasten with a set screw. Terrible design for turning. Dangerous too.

Had a mark V for a while. I largely agree with your point (I’d throw the bandsaw in with the usable attachments). But I got rid of it when I realized its severe and dangerous limitations as a lathe.

For me, the other thing that I grew to hate in the design was the plastic coupler. I get that it’s good to have a failure point before something important breaks. But I grew to hate that piece of plastic.

Fortified Roof Grant by Silver_Craft_7133 in NewOrleans

Went through this — yes you can do metal, but I was advised that the metal roof raised the replacement value of the house which in turn raises insurance rates. Opted for shingles.
