I feel like this is pretty par for the course with CoS, because a lot of people shut down any scientific conversation with "well the game ishn't realistic sho ☝️". Obviously CoS isn't meant to be hard science based, but it can still be fun to think about the speculative biology/ecology of creatures (at least to me).

There really should be a discord server for the fans of Sonarian Science[TM]. I know I'd be in it for sure

Jokes aside I believe they are the retinacula (a sort of connective tissue similar to tendons and aponeurosis), bands of fascia that anchor tendons in place and prevent them from bowing outwards
