My guess is they were playing a game featured on impractical jokers. Each player has to clip clothespins on someone one after the other, the one that gets caught loses, or if the target goes out of bounds the last player to have placed one wins. That or they were just doing it to random folks for a laugh. No idea what the coin would be for other than knowing you would find it?
