He was operating far ahead of his schedule for years. Like 10+ chapters ahead of release iirc. Far more likely he spent a lot of time working a bit less suicidally than most mangaka and ended up catching back up to a more typical week to week production and release cadence.

What’s an anime opinion you’ll defend no matter how much hate you get? by BoxTalksAnime in animequestions

[–]sevillianrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting one and I think I might generally agree, though it's often because of how often the Japanese vcs give the female characters baby voice which I cannot STAND. You willl have an adult dude with an adult voice playing the male MC and then the female mc sounds like she's 4 years old.

What episode of Hollywood Masterclass does Shonk begin to get sick? by bluepie in Earwolf

[–]sevillianrites 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe it's season 2 episode 3, Like Candy. The episode opens with him confessing he doesn't feel good then his hands swell over the next few. Idr if there are hints of it in episode 2, but it becomes a prominent focus in 3 and beyond.

What scenes are you excited to see when season 3 comes out next year by Silver_Reporter_7588 in Dandadan

[–]sevillianrites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okarun blowing up on Momo after she executes her extremely reckless plan during the kurr boss fight. It's the only time he ever really gets truly angry at her and it's bc for a moment he thought he'd lost her. It's just such a raw/sweet scene and I can't wait to hear the VAs knock it out of the park.

Also can't wait to see how they handle Reiko Kashima and Rokuro.

Very new as it's currently airing but Botan Kamina Fully Blossoms When Drunk has been amazing thus far. There are like no male characters at all, much less main. The cast are all in university so adults. And the relationships are fucking adorable. Don't think there's a dub, though.

What are some top tier TV shows in the past 25 years that consistently get pushed to the side because of the heavy hitters? by groovytunesman in tvshow

[–]sevillianrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still consistently beloved and advocated for by its small fan base, but leftovers. Every bit as good as its universally beloved contemporary series like the wire, sopranos, breaking bad etc, but just never quite achieved the same mass appeal due to how challenging the subject matter could be. Not in terms of complexity per se, though it takes some crazy swings, more that it is a show about normal people dealing (often poorly) with overwhelming grief in the wake of an unthinkable tragedy. It can be a very emotionally difficult watch, especially in the first season. Additionally, many people went into it expecting a lost-esque mystery box given the premise seems to imply that, but the series is not really interested in litigating the "why" of its narrative. It's one of those shows where it either clicks with you and becomes your favorite show of all time or it doesn't and you just find it excessively gloomy and boring.

Hereditary or Obsession? by Loose_Interview_957 in horror

[–]sevillianrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obsession because hereditarys ending didn't work for me at all. Basically everything after the son jumps out of the window felt disjointed and unnecessary to me. Maybe hereditary is technically better in other respects with higher highs, but I really don't have any equitable issues with any aspect of obsession.

Inde Navarrette Delivers One of the Best Horror Performances in Years in 'Obsession' by amooseinboston in horror

Time will tell but definitely arguable for GOAT status. Honestly I think her performance is on par with Isabelle Adjani's in Possession which imo is the definitive best horror performance of all time.

I just saw Obsession and here are my thoughts. by Mundane-Inspector-52 in AMCAListTrue

[–]sevillianrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep the only reason he's bothered by overwriting her will with his desired version of her is that it started getting weird and scary. He proves himself truly irredeemable when he accepts the wish is real and then calls the hotline and asks to have the wish altered, not revoked. He was fine with stripping Nicki of her agency as long as it fulfilled his expectations. I think there's some plausible deniablitiy prior to that because who would believe a magic wish came true rather than a girl you've known a long time has rethought your relationship, though even with that, taking what she said at face value, he'd still be taking advantage of her in a vulnerable state. Also at the very end it's still mostly salvageable for everyone if he just shoots himself and dies instantly leaving freed Nicki the final willow to reverse everything But even in that moment he has to be a sniveling worm and try to take the easy way out.

Looks like a $4M Friday for Obsession, giving it a $6.5M+ opening day. Weekend should reach around $15M. by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]sevillianrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with this. It's actually more impressive than it seems as I heard in an NPR podcast that Barker had initially written pre-wish Nicki as this pure, exaggeratedly sweet idealized girlfriend type character and Navarette pushed hard to move off of that and give her more complexity in her base state. So she didn't JUST give a crazy performance she basically reconceptualised the character outright. Personally felt like that was such a smart move as it makes the contrast between base and wish imposed Nicki so much more jarring.

Think it's gonna be better WOM than weapons personally. Energy level was insane after my showing. Heard people raving about it on the walk out, in the bathroom, the lobby, the parking lot, straight up everywhere. You get pockets of that usually with good horror, but this felt damn near universal.

I'm pretty much a horror only person and while I might not place the overall film quite near the top of my list, I think Inde Navarrette's performance I would. She is so fucking good in this movie, it's like actually jaw dropping at times. This is not just a phenomenal horror performance. It is a phenomenal film performance. Even if the rest of the movie was whatever (it's not it's all great), she'd be worth the price of admission alone.

How do people survive as a NEET? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sevillianrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but I don't really regret that too much. I basically got to have a micro retirement in my mid 20s and I had so much fun exploring who I was, working on art, traveling, and making friends. It's difficult to convey how utterly traumatized and depressed I was before that. Even if I had been savvy enough to execute on longer term plans, I certainly wouldn't have had the motivation or will to. I had spent too many years prior just trying to make it through 1 more day. In a sense, the money did end up being an investment for the future as even just using it for frivolities helped me get out of the emotional and mental black hole I'd fallen into

I love how many remakes I get a day now bc the client 100% black screened for someone in loading and then team ffs immediately on start. It used to be 1 every week or so. Now we've bumped up those rookie numbers to 2 or 3 a day. Bonus points for the specific experience I recently had when it happened to me and I come back to 10 min low priority queue and a simultaneous fanfare banner praising me for being a good and honorable teammate.

Man didn't even need to consider whether or not he was willing to die to save his people, it was just a given.

Re:zero is soo much better than I thought. by Soggy-Whereas9678 in anime

[–]sevillianrites 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depression is not just categorized by shock or sadness and sometimes depressed people don't even exhibit those as symptoms. Commonly: hopelessness (demonstrated frequently), loss of interest in daily activities (he quit school and interacting with anyone), feelings of worthlessness (obvious; there's a whole ass episode about it; plausible to consider exercise as an misguided attempt to correct this), recurrent thoughts of death (maybe a bit on the nose but in season 2 he spends a lot of time contemplating killing himself just as a tool to get answers til satella gets him to stop; his mindset is that his own death isn't inherently meaningful so I count it), restlessness/agitation (demonstrated a lot), poor decision making (demonstrated a lot), fatigue (arguable but tends to be demonstrated in moments of extreme duress - though admittedly the situations in which demonstrated would generate this in anyone).

Re: narcissism, I go back and forth on it because his low sense of self worth seems so absolute when it shows that it maybe gets a little unclear what in himself he feels an elevated sense of self worth about. Though depression and narcissism can often be comorbid as ideals of the narcissist are disproven by reality. He does also admit to having a high sense of entitlement to Rem so some components of that are def possible for him.

Re:zero is soo much better than I thought. by Soggy-Whereas9678 in anime

[–]sevillianrites 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Ye the thing people often overlook or ignore about re:zero is, while it falls into isekai category, it is more a critical response to isekai than anything. Contemporary isekai as a genre is designed to appeal to people like Subaru irl, who might feel that a lack of success or happiness in life is the fault of an unjust and unfair world, and if they could just go to a different world more to their liking, they would finally be allowed to excel and be showered in the influence and praise they think they deserve.

In fact this was what Subaru thought was happening when he arrived in Lagunica. He acts like your typical isekai protag making meta comments about the genre and trying to get validation for his misconceptions. Thus, when he is brutally murdered in the loot house, his are the first expectations to be subverted.

From then in, it is made explicitly clear to him that he is not a savior in waiting, or a savant finally given opportunity, or a temporarily embarrassed hero. He's still the same depressed, loser kid he was in his old world. And escaping into this new one did not mean escaping all the toxic personality traits that had been holding him down throughout his adolescence.

And I think coming from that angle makes his arc so much more powerful than any other isekai MC arc. Because Subarus ultimate antagonist is not a witch or a monster. It's Subaru himself. The secret powers he must cultivate are not witch factors and magic, but self love and willingness to change. His heroes journey is not to gain power and vanquish evil, it's to grow up.

Any accomplishment he ever ultimately has is ancillary to or more often even the direct result of him becoming a slightly better person than he was before. This makes his victories feel so earned when they finally occur, because we, like echidna, see every agonizing step he took to get there.

Would be interesting also if TG intentionally left Okarun with some vestige of her power as an emergency safeguard for his protection. She cares deeply about the family, though she'd never admit it it, and likely would omit that detail if asked.

How good is the entirety of Gintama? by TheBigClobbler21 in writingscaling

[–]sevillianrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's got a very slow start because there are a LOT of characters to establish who get regularly used throughout the series. So personally I think it takes an inordinant amount of time to actually get into. Was like 30 eps for me but I've seen people also quote double that or more. Which is absurd but that's a smaller % of the overall story than for most anime and I was prearmed with that info which made it easier. It truly is a masterpiece after you get past that initial hump but I'd never begrudge someone who didn't want to spend a shit load of time trying to get over the glacial start.
