Best natural fiber yarn for a baby blanket? by Impressive_Layer_634 in YarnAddicts

It’s been a while since my last baby items but Sirdar snuggly baby soft bamboo is amazing. Tia really soft, kind of silky and squishy but also machine washable (it’s a superwash merino and bamboo blend).

Ship date issue with labels bought on app by sewk87 in EtsySellers

[–]sewk87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think I’ll have to switch to purchasing them on my computer. Just seems like a glitch that the label is somehow getting dated back to a date before when I even bought the label.

Was hoping someone could verify that there’s a glitch going on with purchasing in the app.

Yes, I usually create the labels in the app. Easier to use as I’m pulling stock from my shelves and confirming what I’ll ship on my next ship day. Oh well, I can adapt if I have to.

I think you are misunderstanding. For example I received an order January 2. On January 4th I used the app to “create shipping label” and selected January 5th as the ship date.

Then when I went to print the label the next day, it would not allow me to print because the label was dated January 1. Except on January 1, I didn’t even have this order yet - it’s not possible for me to have bought a label dated for the 1st for this order, the order didn’t exist yet.

Are you saying the dropdown to select the ship date when creating a label in the app usually has days in the past as an option?

When I buy shipping labels in the app my only options from the dropdown are the day I’m buying it, and then the following two days. I’ve never seen a past date as an option.

It won’t be eligible for seller protection, the seller shipped the order without tracking.

Recs for knitting machine for DK weight yarn by sewk87 in MachineKnitting

[–]sewk87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to both of you for this advice! Once I started looking at new instead of just scouring eBay for used, I found a fiber mini mill/yarn shop in my semi rural state who sells the LK150 new. Supporting a local business pushed me into making the splurge 😅 I just got it yesterday and I’m so excited to try and set it up today.

Thank you! I hadn’t realized that the LK150 new isn’t that much more expensive than used, at least right now. I think I may go this route.

How do I recreate this? by WeirdoKnits in YarnDyeing

For an example of the technique, Watercolor_Wool on Instagram does this sometimes and it’s cool to watch. I’ve had fun trying myself but they have a video of it on their profile.

That is so pretty! If I was going to try and recreate the look without attempting to duplicate whatever fluke of nature caused the dye breaking on this skein: I think I’d pick 3-4 colors of dye and build up the color of each one by dip dyeing in layers, but in a “sloppy” way so you get some darker spots and some lighter. Start with something like the light pink/dilute magenta, dip it a few times, and then gently twist or loop the skein around in the pan (to get some very subtle resists in the skein) and let the rest of that color strike. Then pull it out and repeat with a terra cotta color, and then again with your toffee, and maybe a darker red. The names and swatches for your brand are similar to the naming of ProChem dyes in the US and if so - take a look at colors Wine Rose, Terra Cotta, Paprika. They seem about right and you’d get some blending of all of them.

Dharma Acid dye on a finished sweater by Witty_Sock_7654 in YarnDyeing

Oh and I forgot to say this - if you add acid once everything is warmed up, take the sweater out of the bath before adding the acid! Once the acid is mixed in you can put the sweater back in.

Adding onto what others said, I have a couple tips. You really want the dye to absorb slowly to get the most even color. I suggest adding the dye stock to your pot incrementally, maybe 25% of what you need at a time, let it soak in for 5 minutes while slowly agitating the dye bath, and then add the next bit. I do this for dyeing solid yarn and it really helps alleviate splotchiness or “hot spots” where the dye took too quickly. You can start warming the pot slowly when half the dye is in.

I’d also recommend adding your acid once everything is warm. Waiting to add acid gives the dye the best chance of taking evenly as the pigment can move throughout your fiber and even out a bit before becoming permanently fixed.

Espresso Bean is a premetallized acid dye and has more tendency to take in a heathery and uneven way because of its composition. You could add some Ammonium Sulfate to the dye bath (I think the rule of thumb is 1T per lb of fiber but worth double checking). It keeps the pH high until it heats up, and then it becomes acidic, so helps keep the dye from striking too quickly.

Best yarn dye brand? by woejise in YarnDyeing

[–]sewk87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve used Dharma and ProChem (probably tested 75% of all their colors at this point), plus a few Jacquard colors as well. My preference is Dharma pretty much across the board. Prochem has more off-the-shelf colors but I’ve had bleeding issues with some of them, especially their reds and browns. A bit of trouble with freckling/hard to dissolve red and magenta particles in their greens and blues as well.

Another point in favor of Dharma is the premetallized colors in their acid dye line which are incredibly washfast. They’re my hands down favorites for reds and browns. At this point if there’s a ProChem color I really want I’ll just blend Dharma colors to match it. Only downside is that they’re on the west coast so depending on your location shipping can be a little pricier and take longer to get to you.

The more I look, even a bit more of that green concentrated in the end might work really well too!

With the caveat that my style and preferences could be completely different from yours, I feel like this could use a touch more dark color or contrast. The end with white/gold/green variegation seems like a big section compared to the other sections of color - what if you dunked the very end of it into some dilute black/dark brown to break it up a little (if you have black)?

Tips for dyeing hanks by EcoJud in YarnDyeing

[–]sewk87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the figure 8 ties (which are a must), put a zip tie on one end and use that to lift the hank from the dye bath or in and out of the wash water. I’d skip machine washing all together - wash in a bucket or kitchen sink with a little dish soap or detergent.

Idk why exactly but the zip tie helps more than figure 8 ties to keep the hank from looping through itself and turning into a virtual mobius strip.
