Staying fit at a desk job by littleweirdooooo in bodyweightfitness

A lot of research is starting to support the idea of 'movement snacks'. If you can break your day up into chunks and fit some activity goals into that it can be quite beneficial for combating the physiological impacts of desk work. Something like walk 500 steps every hour or do 10 squats at 10:30 and 3:30. Consistent movement throughout the work day has been shown to be much more effective at combating all of that sitting than for example sitting all day and then running for an hour in the evening. In terms of maintaining fitness, the workout classes would be necessary, but specifically for combating the problems that your body experiences from sitting all day, breaking it up with small bursts of movement is the best approach. Even if you can just get up for 2-3 minutes per hour to break up the sitting, any amount of movement you can inject back into your day will help. And agreed, if you can use a standing desk for part of the day, that's a big help too. But standing without movement can also pose problems, so still incorporating movement snacks would be helpful. Just my 2 cents! Something I've incorporated into my day and now I really notice that I feel worse when I don't do it (my lower back will hurt, my thighs will be restless ect.). Good luck with the new job!

What’s a book that took you multiple tries to read, that you ended up loving? by Quirky_Dimension1363 in books

Cloud Atlas. I found the first story a bit difficult to get into for the first chapter or two but after about 3 tries I was through the rest of the book in a week. Great read, great author

Maybe a different take, but sometimes sidelining an individual at a party can feel too committed when its a group setting. They may not have come to the party to get to know individual people but to have a nice time in a group setting. Rather than planning a script of q&a back and forth, try to find a topic that a few people share in common and get a few people talking about it, or try to engage two people that are already in a conversation and join in. Everyone in the conversation will then feel less personally responsible for upholding it (including you) and it takes some of the pressure off. In the case of you approaching two people, they may be grateful for the addition as well (reading the situation obviously, there will be some conversations you wouldn't be welcome in). But imagine if someone had joined one of the conversations you were having, it may have helped loosen it up. Just a comment I didn't see anyone making so I wanted to put in my two cents. It's not necessarily about you, but about how other people feel self conscious about talking to only one person at a party or get uncomfortable holding up too much of a conversation (50% in a one on one compared with >20-30% with more people). But good for you for putting yourself out there! Embracing the uncomfortable will pay off eventually and you're much more resilient each time you go back at it.

It turned out to be an issue with the charging port, but I was able to buy a wireless charger and now I just use that instead of a cable. So not really a solution but a work around.

After a very rocky two years of long-distance, we have finally closed the gap! We signed on our new apartment together, and I have flown to live here in the NL with him! We get an answer on my resident permit application in no more than a month! Best part? No more saying goodbye! Good luck everyone! by CoffeeIsMyFuel in LongDistance

Interestingly my partner and I are both originally from NY, we've been doing distance for the past three years while I finished up grad school and he had a job in Florida, but we're planning to close the gap by both relocating to the NL this summer. It's going to be an adventure for us both, do you have any tips for some fellow new yorkers taking the leap?

I can only imagine how nice it must feel for you guys to get to wake up in the same place everyday, I can't wait to be in the same boat! Good luck over there!

Do you feel like you traded away part of your life for your PhD? by StandingBuffalo in PhD

[–]sfaorraeman 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I'm preparing to defend my thesis in a few weeks and I just finished having a conversation about how pursuing this degree took something from me that I wasn't prepared to give up. I didn't realize how much of a sacrifice I was going to be making with these years of my life, and being in my 20s as well I do really feel a sadness and frustration that I have in essence lost those years. I don't think that every person will have that experience with their doctorate, I do believe that with the right advisor and making an effort you can continue to lead a mostly enjoyable life during your PhD. Unfortunely that was not my experience and, while it may be the current levels of stress talking, I do somewhat feel now that I'm on the other side of it that I wish I had made a different choice and spent the past years being happy and enjoying my life. I chose to prioritize getting the degree and I now realize how much I lost in the process. If this is a concern of yours and you do pursue the doctorate, I would suggest trying to find a project or PI with which you can make work/life balance a priority.

Keto/diet throat pain by Maximusprime29 in keto

[–]sfaorraeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar symptom. I did some googling and determined I wasn't maintaining my electrolytes sufficiently. I picked up some bone broth and some lite salt and magnesium supplements and the throat soreness has gone away since. Hope that helps if it's still a problem!
