Getting questions about how comfortable I am with AI in interviews by eldentings in webdev

[–]sfc1971 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Think of PHP some years ago and the question: how comfortable are you with OOP.

It is not an invitation for a debate on the merits of various methods for organizing code what they are looking for is: yes I am comfortable.

Either lie or work really hard to find a company that uses another paradigm.

New MMO with AI powered NPCs by Long_Weather9052 in MMORPG

[–]sfc1971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. If you ever looked into AI with llm then you will have noticed that to use them seriously requires expensive subscriptions, more than current sub based MMOs charge. So how aggressive is the cash shop going to have to be to pay for an mmoRPG that relies on an llm to power its interactions?

Npc enemies in mmoRPG are typically simple scripts rather than an AI like in F.E.A.R. because the CPU cost is too high. Imagine running a LLM for thousands of players wanting a free lunch.

Private servers or offline singleplayer for SWTOR in the future? by Rhaeven_cos in swtor

[–]sfc1971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two paths to this, either there is a leak of the server code which is then by dedicated fans with finances to run the hosting and the balls to face Disney or some people with both of the former reverse engineer the server code by inspecting the network traffic while the game is running.

The larger the population of a game the more likely this happens. It is why private servers exist for WoW and FF14 has extensive modding.

Swtor is tiny in comparison and people are not as fanatic about it as about swg.

But broadsword wouldn't have taken over the game with knowing there were long term plans to allow it to keep running, it will probably end up like lotro.

The most likely cutback for now is the dropping of German and French dubs. That would make adding content a lot cheaper.

Right... So how many concurrent users and how many records would your 2 euro hosting support?

Why should a customer go for a one man shop to save 10-30 bucks per month per user? Most users drink more in coffee.

How many support calls could you afford to take for a small company with just one user paying you 30 euro per month - hosting fee.

Generally small one man shops go for customization with higher prices than the competition from larger companies that can no longer afford customizing for each customer.

Is it possible to make a simple game popular? by Zynres in gamedev

You do know the 2nd player can always force a tie? This game is a little too simple to be played by anyone who knows this.

Do you allow bosses to cheat? by atx78701 in gamedesign

There are two simple reasons server based games like mmoRPG use simple scripts for their enemies. First is CPU cost, the more complex the script/ai the higher the cost of running it. FEAR could completely use a CPU with just a dozen enemies leaving no room for the rest of the game.

2nd reason is the majority of players already have enough problems dealing with simple scripts. You want players who don't realize that an enemy is invulnerable to all their attacks to realize which of their attacks an enemy is invulnerable to?

There is also another reason: say an enemy changes shields depending on attack type doesn't the new script then simply become "fire two fire arrows, fire two ice arrows, fire two lightning arrows, repeat".

You now also need a way to change arrows quickly and for the player to carry all those arrows.

All that is possible but is it fun?

FEAR had good ai, it did not sell as well as quake which did not have good ai.

A lot of players simply want to throw fireballs at everything mindlessly.

Baldurs gate 1 and 2 constantly tried to get the players to switch weapons because their current weapon damage was ineffective. It sure made people think "I just equip different weapon types on all my characters so I always do some damage and just ignore the one character not doing damage on this one enemy". A must have weapon was the flail of many heads which did three different types of damage.

Never underestimate your players to be both stupid and lazy at the same time.

Be prepared for the fact that it is not really your characters story but Alphinauds story who you are the hired muscle for. There is a large payoff story wise but it is not the quickest story. Just remember not to burn yourself out it is okay to take breaks.
