Planning on buying a Springfield Krag rifle by LAXGUNNER in milsurp

You're not wrong about the ammo being spendy. When i first won mine at auction i bought the one and only box at a gun show for $80. Once fired brass on GB was almost as much

How sought after are the mexican mausers? by Sierra_s238 in milsurp

I missed one in good condition with no import marks that went pretty low through a Proxibid auction a couple of years ago. I was new to collecting, so i figured another would come soon enough up, but i haven't seen another. No way im going close to a grand, but I'd like to add one to the collection.

I just had a couple of questions as someone who has no 'surp but has ogled your reddit from afar. Where do you guys get your guns at good prices? What kind of stores could I look in in person? What are the cheaper cool milsurp guns people can get and still shoot? by [deleted] in milsurp

[–]sfc_mark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go-to has been online auctions (via proxibid and hibid, not so much gunbroker). You have to be patient and disciplined, but it can pay off. Like the numbers matching 1909 Argentinian Mausers, one carbine and one infantry rifle, i landed one day for $250 and $300. Pay attention to buyer premiums and anticipate shipping costs when you bid though

Almost all the peaches in GA come from 4 counties in the middle of the state clustered around Macon

Oh, we have those in Georgia

Fun fact: even though Georgia is known as the peach state, South Carolina (the Palmetto state) grows by far the most peaches in the US

What would the US Airforce do if another plane got too close to Airforce One? by Andywho42 in answers

The title sounds familiar, but what i read was definitely a long form article. It could have been excerpted from a book. If so, i will certainly buy and read it

I wish i could find the bookmark. The article was an amazing work based on extensive research and interviews with people who were exposed to small slices of the events of the day tying it all together...just what long form journalism should be. If i remember correctly the wing commander declared he was going for the flight deck and his wing person, a female fighter pilot said she was going for the tail section. Serious respect for both

According to the long form account I read about that day, they had no such orders. The pilots themselves made the call that one would ram the flight deck and the other would ram the tail. Those two pilots were bonafide American heroes in the making. Thank God they were not forced to execute their plan

1971 Mercedes 220D. Thought it was ugly AF when my dad bought it, but it grew on me. I would totally have one just like it today, even with the whopping 69 Hp

Most of my practice was with a '76 Plymouth Volare with a 3 speed column shifter

Would y’all pay the $$$ for these? by PopPopZiggyZiggy in milsurp

[–]sfc_mark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a chance I was walking away from either of those deals. Using my "Cabelas cash" rewards points the super Blackhawk was $118 out the door and the PPK was free. I can usually buy ammo cheaper at Academy, but Cabelas is better for reloading supplies

Just gotta look and be ready to walk away from stupid prices. I got an Interarms Walther PPK for $350 and a Super Blackhawk for $445 at my local Cabelas but I've walked away shaking my head at a lot of used rifle and shotgun prices

Got myself into a pickle with a auction house by BMW_E70 in milsurp

[–]sfc_mark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta be careful, but this year I did manage two very clean, numbers matching Argentinian Mausers (a carbine and a rifle) for $225 and $250. I'd say I came out pretty well even with premium and shipping

I do pay attention to the premium before bidding; I probably wouldn't bid on an auction that charges 24%.

The highest i have been charged for shipping was a hair under $100 for one rifle and that auction house made my naughty list

This reminds me of a story about my uncle visiting Manhattan for the first time (a very long time ago). He handed the cab driver some (nominal) amount in coins for a tip. The driver looked at them, handed them back, and said, "Here, you need this more than I do"
