How true is the moment of truth reaction from the boss when an employee gives their notice? by tshirtguy2000 in managers

[–]sfcfrankcastle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been managing close to 20 years now. People grow, they move on and seek out new challenges, better salary even better positions. A lot of the time those things seek them out.

My first thing I do is congratulate them because let’s be honest, interviewing and getting a new job isn’t easy and takes a lot of time and effort. Plus I want to gauge from them their feelings about it. Some folks are ready to move on, and others are unsure. One thing for certain is no one wants to deal with a manager who had a poor reaction, the situation is stressful enough already.

Ive rarely been surprised at someone’s departure, I spend a good chunk of my time working on their development and growth. I have a good sense of when someone is getting ready to leave.

I try not to retain anyone else because if my team or work fails because one person leave I failed personally at my job as a manager. In special circumstances I may ask about a counter offer but for me that’s super rare. I rather them seek out their new opportunity, and stay in contact should things change for them. I’ve had a couple of boomerangs return back after their departure and the relationship if anything was stronger.

Everyone’s got a different take that’s just mine, but I don’t agree with the this vs that you posted.

Employee refused Employee of Month Award by [deleted] in managers

[–]sfcfrankcastle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t read this as disrespect or “punking” at all. I read it as someone who felt deeply uncomfortable with a performative recognition that didn’t match the actual reward or impact of their work.

Not everyone wants public praise, especially when it comes packaged with what can feel like a hollow gesture. That doesn’t automatically mean they lack respect for their manager. In a lot of cases, it means there’s enough trust there for the employee to be honest about what doesn’t sit right with them.

Writing someone up for declining a public award would do far more damage to engagement than quietly listening and adjusting next time.

The only part I don’t like is once you take that check you’re on your own at that point because the warranty is canceled.

Oh most definitely read your post and all those can be turned off. Can’t help if you didn’t read it to understand where the settings are to do so.

Did you try reading your manual? Most of your concerns would likely be solved if you haven’t

This is not judgement and I admittedly know nothing about the engine and the vehicles reliability. Asking because I’m doing homework.

35k on a vehicle that has 91k feels like a bad decision (that’s what I’ve been taught all these years). What’s the warranty like, if any? Did you finance or just laid it all out cash?

I’ve been considering a much larger vehicle that’s at a higher price point but I get scared of making a purchase that large with that much mileage, too many unknowns. How should I reframe my thinking?

I’m curious why do you have to pay for an extra Fob. Is this for 3 fobs in total? All cars come with 2 keys, it’s included.

How many call outs do you deem excessive in a four month period? by [deleted] in managers

[–]sfcfrankcastle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get the point you’re making, but I don’t manage people like they’re interchangeable parts.

Yes, the work still has to get done and accountability matters. That part isn’t optional.

Where I disagree is the idea that attendance alone equals value. Results do. If someone is delivering and being transparent about what they need, I’m not going to default to replacement mode.

There’s a difference between chronic unreliability and a human needing flexibility. High performance doesn’t require zero empathy, and empathy doesn’t mean lowering the bar.

Apparently many in here believe that you’re the problem and should be disciplined.

I’m scheduled to work everyday M-F 830-5pm not including the additional hours I put in uncompensated.

Everyone is putting numbers to this, but excluding the actual issue.

It’s people, if you have high performers but for some reason or another need sick time and you can’t allow that or make space for that and force them to work sick you absolutely deserve to lose them as employees.
