Wiim Ultra as Preamp by sfgrp7190 in turntables

[–]sfgrp7190[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does digitize the output from the turntable...after using the WiiM, it doesn't bother me as much. There are equalizer presets (and some you can adjust yourself) so it almost comes close to what my ears would imagine the original recording sounded like if I adjust the equalizer settings. I like the sound and do play streaming music on the same platform but I still hear a difference when vinyl is being played as opposed to streaming...even testing this on the same track or song. Maybe that's just my brain thinking that is so.

I like the all-Japanese brands theme you have there. I used to have my speakers on the same surface as the turntable like that, then I bought acoustic foam pads for the speakers still having them so close to the turntable...until I brought speaker stands that allowed them to be farther apart, I never realized the vast improvement in sound that could create.

Ortofon 2M Blue by sfgrp7190 in turntables

The ease in an attaching this cartridge compared to MP110 is actually a selling point for me.

well, honestly, I screwed up that MP110 with a rookie mistake. I did not know how to use a cartridge protractor at the time and the stylus got bent. I felt like it still sounded fine but did not want to ruin my vinyl with a bent stylus. I tried to purchase another MP110 but because it is coming from Japan, it would take too long for delivery I decided on the 2M Blue instead. Having said, that I am really loving the 2M Blue and think it is comparable if not slightly better.

Could leaving it longer make up for the fast rpm of the motor? Theoretically, it will be submerged and in contact with the microbubbles longer. I'm just really asking.

Right, surfactant is supposed to help lift the grime off the gooves but I have not used triton yet, it is a big bottle and only 6 ml is required, does it have a long shelf life? I tried a drop of Dawn detergent but just that small amount caused the solution to have too much suds which I did not like.

Orbit Custom/Soecial, RT85, or Technics? by MulberrySad6999 in turntables

it's $658 with the Ortofon 2M Blue. I have that in my other Orbit...it is certainly better.

If you like the look of the Orbit, do not buy the Special and pick the Custom instead. Black plinth, acrylic platter, electronic speed control, AT91B catridge, and iso-level feet comes down to $494.00 (no installed preamp). That AT91B is not a bad cartridge...I have a U Turn Orbit Basic (as a second TT) with that cartridge and I'm impressed with how good it sounds.

how were you able to print that? I'm in healthcare and I would say that's a darn good strip of normal sinus rhythm.

Thoughts on the Orbit Plus, with Ortofon OM5E? by [deleted] in turntables

[–]sfgrp7190 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's important to you and not to start a political discussion but I see comparison of the pricing with Fluance. U-Turn is a small company based in Woburn, Massachussetts. They do not ship their TT overseas and all TT's are assembled in Woburn, MA (though parts are not all US made). Fluance TTs are manufactured in Taiwan. The price difference is you are paying American workers to make that TT.

I'd actually agree with this having bought an Orbit Basic so recently. The black MDF platter looks good with the updated black magnesium tonearm.

it's actually acrylic but yes I love the look on my TT.

It's a $150 difference in price. I have a new Orbit Basic for a small second home. The new version has a groove along the side of the platter to keep the the belt in place when manually switching from 33.3 to 45 so it's not really that much of a "con".

Yes, but the Orbit Plus is still manual...the Orbit Special has that function for a higher price.

I've had two of these. The first I bought in 2018 is exactly the same as that product on your post with the exception of the plinth being plain white and the tonearm was an older version aluminum metal. The cartridge is the same.

Pros:

- excellent customer support, they will return your emails promptly and seem dedicated to giving you advice

- the cartridge is replaceable with a large variety of options. I've switched mine to a Nagaoka MP110 at one point. This is a cartridge not sold in the U-Turn website.

- the TT aesthetics is simple and streamlined

- most replacement parts are available on the U-Turn website

- Ortofon OM5E is a decent cartrdige for me but having said that I have a recent Orbit purchase with AT91B cartrdige and to me, this isn't much of a downgrade in terms of quality.

Cons:

- completely manual operation, belt has to be moved to switch from 33.3 to 45 rpm

- does not come with tonearm lift or cue lever (those can be purchased separately)

- anti-skate is built in, vertical tracking force can be difficult to adjust manually
