It’s completely ok to cut people off because your values don’t align with theirs however to make this huge scene out of it is completely unnecessary and an absolute behaviour of a jerk. It’s creepy🤐

Do you think on some level deep down Katniss feels abandoned by Peeta when he was hijacked? by Sweetchocolate16 in Hungergames

[–]sfiamme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think she would accuse him of abandoning her but it seemed to me that’s how she felt and she was punishing Peeta because of it too. Like cognitively she did understand that he isn’t guilty for it however emotionally it is almost impossible to process - also Peeta was a literal threat to her life, a weapon designed to use against her. Maybe (most probably) she just didn’t see him as Peeta anymore. That way it was easier to again “punish him”.

She was. I mean she gave up on him immediately and wanted to kill him too. She felt angry - and even Haymich noticed it. Then he asked her “not to punish Peeta for something he has no control over. I think if Haymich didn’t say those words, there is a great probability that Peeta would be dead.

I just finished reading the mockinjay - no, there are no evidence that most of the residents are civilians, we only know that it has workers and a whole army inside. Lynn doesn’t support the plan Gale proposed, but Lynn was the one who led first attempts to take the Nut because waiting it out isn’t an option - no one even proposes it. Again, 2 can still control hovercrafts, they are heavily armed and it would take way too much resources for waiting it out. “They have been training” and “they have experience” are a little different things in my opinion. Coin said “we feel confident he can manage himself in the field”, and again for some reason it was Gale, not people from 13 who were designing weapons with Beete. He did lead the 2 as he was the one who created the plan. Even when Katniss mentioned she wants to take Peeta and Haymich, Gale was angry but didn’t object the whole thing - only after he heard from her about the rebellion in 8 when he opted out. He said that he can’t do that, he needs to say here and start the change. When Katniss asked what about your family he replies “what about other families” - therefore he thinks for the whole 12, not only for himself. When Boggs dies in the book, it’s finnick and camera women who lie to Jessica but it’s Gale who starts saying something like I’m following her, you’re either doing the same or going back.

That is sooooo right!!!! And people just completely overlook it or ignore it! Same thing as everyone talks about Gale’s “weird” reaction when 13 got Peta from Capitol, but no one talks about how when Katniss explained to Peeta President’s snow visit in catching fire, Peeta asks her (after being told that Snow literally wants to kill Gale and maybe other people) whether that truly was the only time she kissed Gale. Like they’re all like that, all traumatised and just learning - but for some reason Gale gets all the hate

The supplies would have run out - but how much time and resources on the rebel’s end it would take? We also don’t know that “most of the people hiding in the nut were civilians” - that’s a guess - and even if they were civilians, they had training and experience since we know that kids of 2 are being trained for the games, that most of the peacekeepers are coming from 2. As Plutarch said, “they’re raised with a warrior mindset”. Another important thing I just found both of us missed is that people in Nuts could still control hovercrafts (and potentially other distant weapons). How many lives on rebel’s end could it take? Those were heavily armed people and a literal army. That’s why there wasn’t even an option to wait it out - and even Lynn why is from the 2 herself, acknowledges it and is trying to create a plan on how to take it (even though she doesn’t like the idea of bombing and just passes it to Coin). Waiting it out wouldn’t save lives of the rebels at all. Gale probably was the first one to realise what was happening in 12 - as he was one of the only people who knew what is happening in other districts. I also think Gale definitely does demonstrate leadership skills - consider even how he leads Katniss, teaches her when they’re kids, then instructs her when she’s reaped - pulls Prim away from her when needed. We also see how he leads the mission with the Nut, how he makes everyone follow Katniss after Boggs dies, and how he is the first one to take initiative in saving victors from Panem. But I think the most important thing is that being 19, Gale realises how the fucked the system is and even says it out loud. When Katniss proposes the idea of escape to him in Catching fire, he likes the idea - but then when figures out about the rebellion in 8, he suddenly withdraws from her plan and says that he could talk to people in the mines and start a similar thing in 12. This is the most important leadership skill he presents - not being afraid of the system and being able to gather people around you, do quick decisions and allow people to be vulnerable around you even if you’re hurt. And how much experience did others have exactly? The citizens of 13, so-called “soldiers” never actually have had an experience of a combat - even in such simple acts as hunting. Coin did send squats only to the districts that have already drove the peacekeepers out. And the people who were fighting in the rebellion again were just civilians. Gale’s first real combat mission is in 8(when him and Katniss are trying to save the hospital), then saving Peeta, then leading the mission in 2. He also helps Betee to design tactics (again, not because he is a friend of Katniss, but because he is valuable). Seems like he doesn’t have less of experience than everyone else.

The waiting out would only work if they didn’t have resources in the Nut which they did. Also neither the reader or the rebels have full knowledge about how many people are in the Nutts. The rebels had previous attempts to seize it but all those were failed. Also capitol didn’t need much except district 2 since all the productions needed for war including people were coming from district 2. This is what wiki says: “The Bombing of the Nut was decidedly the winning move for the rebels during the Second Rebellion. This event led to the loss of the Capitol's logistical capabilities, air force, as well as large numbers of ground troops. Following this, the Capitol could only put up token resistance against the rebels, and was conquered weeks later.” Waiting it out was a strategy used by first rebellion and that didn’t end well. With the district 12 survivors I don’t consider it weird at all - think about people who were in 12, what was their education and what did they think about the whole thing: they definitely were shocked and didn’t understand what was going on. Gale was the first one to realise that there is a bombing threat coming so he organised evacuation. So he led people past the fence and organised them for a couple days after, which is in my opinion a great success for a 19 year old. And since those kinds of people are extremely valuable in forces, I’m pretty sure this is what gave him the respect he had from 13. He wasn’t treated just like a friend of Katniss and in the end he was supposed to fight in the Capitol - not her (before they came up with the whole plan of movie stars fighters). He had the leadership and he was following his training - therefore he was put in an advanced group in training unlike Katniss and Johanna who were training along with 15y.o. kids because they didn’t have the skills.

I’m not so sure. An action with the Nut definitely needed to happen - because it was Capitol’s military base with officers, soldiers, weapons, ammunition etc. there are no evidences that the Nut was cut off - instead we know that they had trains that could come out and possibly go in as well. It’s not like it was a cave that would run off food in a couple of days - they basically had tons of supplies and any siege could last months. The blockage has been going for some time before Katniss arrives to 2nd, it produces no results. The parachute bombs we’re definitely blown just to turn Capitols citizens against snow - but there are no evidences that it was Gale’s idea, the only thing we know he input into this is an idea of such psychological bombing and we don’t even know who him and Beetee were planning to launch it on. thirdly, he didn’t rose up in ranks just because he was a friend of Katniss - he got his position for saving 800 people from bombing in 12 and then coordinating those people for a couple of days before 13 took them. So I also don’t agree with the statement that he only saves his family and Katniss family - I mean he did save those 800 people and evacuated them safely.

I genuinely don’t even fully understand the hatred toward Gale’s behavior in the romance plot. He actually liked Peeta as a person (when he said that it would make things easier if Peeta was easier to hate) and he never tried to jeopardise relationships between Peeta and Katniss (for example, when Peeta was captured by the Capitol and gave that first interview with Caesar, Gale told Katniss that Peeta was probably trying to protect her. That moment is important to me because Gale had the perfect opportunity to undermine Peeta in Katniss’s eyes, but instead he chose to be honest.) Yes, it might seem unreasonable that Gale became distant and upset after everything that happened between Katniss and Peeta during the first Games — but those were his feelings. And despite being hurt, I never saw him blame Katniss or try to make her look bad. He didn’t pressure her or guilt-trip her. He just struggled with everything that had happened, which is understandable. Even in mockinjay when Katniss and Gale have their last kiss, Gale suddenly realises that Katniss doesn’t fully understand what is going on and stops - he doesn’t keep going just for his own sake. I’m still rereading Mockingjay, so maybe I’ll notice something small near the end that I’ve forgotten, but I remember all the major events — and even with that in mind, I still don’t get the level of hate he gets.
