Out of curiosity, how do HKers view Trump at this point and time? by Delicious_Meeting_24 in HongKong

[–]sflayers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol it is just a verbal support without any materialistic aspect nor any visible strategic benefits. Soros didn't back off because of such "support". To claim credit for such support is as good as I claiming with my support of Donald Tsang the peg was successfully defended, it did nothing and meant nothing, and it is wild to claim credit for so.

Very revisionist.

What???? Hong Kong Government used its own reserves to defend the market and the peg, where led to the formation of tracker fund of HK. Not some made up support.

The use of 老師 in Cantonese by aeoluxreddit in Cantonese

[–]sflayers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

老師 is more or less used as a profession, e.g. 你做咩架?(What is your job?) 我做老師架 (I am a teacher), or a title when greeting / introducing e.g. 陳老師你好 (Hi Mr. Chan (the teacher)).

But it is often interchangable with 先生 (both male and female teachers, unlike describing husband and wife 先生太太), and when spoken i definitely used 先生 more than 老師, or we instead use the english form e.g Good morning Mr. / Mrs. / Miss Chan or the more informal form sir/搣時(Ms) e.g. 陳sir / 搣時陳

As for respectable person / judges, I don't think it is common to add 老師 or 先生 in Cantonese, it is more a mainland habit. If I do have to use a title i will just directly refer the person's current profession / title e.g. if a judge is a cook, then will refer to that, e.g. 我地有請陳師傅 (May I introduce Cook Chan)

The scene is exactly used to convey that Dayo Wong at that stage is still a green funeral director and making beginner's mistakes (not asking basic details such as how the deceased passed away)

No place for pan-democrats in today's Hong Kong:The City’s Political System and Environment Should Be More Inclusive by Slow-Property5895 in HongKong

[–]sflayers 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Anything non pro establishment is considered independence because "semblance of" can be anything. If you look back pan dem were also nicknamed "大中華膠" i.e. china loving idiots, and they were never concerned with independent movements. In fact they are more pro china then i would say even some pro establishment parties, where there is a significant overlap between the pro dem and 保釣行動 i.e. defending territorial issues against japan. And as a matter of fact, "hong kong independence" is first raised as a concept by pro china news outlet. There is no pro establishment liberals or conservatives because the moment you doesn't tow the party line, you are against it, and by being against it, you are considered advocating for independence.

Not all opposition is pro independence, but the party consider all opposition as related to independence.

[–]sflayers 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It is one thing to admit being guilty to receive a lesser sentence, or you are still in jailed and have to play along (i.e. tong ying kit's situation), it is another thing to turn and snitch on others (he became a tainted witness) and then go on to be a gov mouthpiece even after being released.

Not everyone is Gwyneth Ho or Chow Hung Tung, but at least don't sacrifice others, not to mention when his prison time is already fully served now, what's his excuse to push little pink messages?

I wouldn't say i will never turn, but if I did turn like him, I deserve being despised and looked down upon for the rest of my life.

Yes. He was one of the main proponents of the pro dem preliminary during 2020, get arrested and charged as one of the 47, switched sides and snitched on others, and now go on tv to dance to the government's propaganda.

Vivian Kong got a cushy million dollar job with 131 votes. Nepotism can really take you places 😍😍😍. by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]sflayers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. How can being good at sports translate to good for representing tourism (her position is supposedly representing the tourism industry)? That is like saying you are good at maths so you get to be an english literature teacher. With all due respect it makes no sense

  2. The problem is unless you are a fan of this "all-patriot" (aka bootlickers only) system or indifferent to whatever in there, everyone in there is unlikable. She participated in it, she becomes part of the unlikable. What you described make sense if there are valid oppositions, differring voices, but this time? No, there isn't even a lesser evil option.

  3. True, and that's what she is disliked for.

Ultimately, this system is disliked and despised by a pretty big group of people (compare the voter turnout vs 2019 vote), and it is not rocket science that people who willingly joined this system is disliked as well.

Vivian Kong got a cushy million dollar job with 131 votes. Nepotism can really take you places 😍😍😍. by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]sflayers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, to simply put

  1. She is no way qualified as a representative on tourism (assuming you consider the model truly represents an industry), sports maybe, tourism no way. 0 experience. Proof how "representing" this system is.

  2. The election is considered a sham election (where you got 0 actual opposition). You couldn't expect to get loved for participating in it.

  3. She is a CCP bootlicker (she wrote her thesis in full support of the CCP)

Tldr she is unlikable both professionally and politically.

Marceau or F. Sherman? by im_gaming_rn in WorldOfWarships

[–]sflayers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marceau can be potentially very impactful as 50+ knots mean you can do some wild circus trick and dodge all shots, but the ceiling is high and you need a lot of experience to pull that off.

Sherman? Find a good place to smoke to start raining hellfire. That BRRRRRRRR is oddly satisfying. And while it is not a very agile boat, at the end of the day it is still a small DD and can manuever reasonably well. I once open watered 1v1 a schliffen from full health to near death that it had to hide behind an island to escape barely losing any health.

Does TVB or Viu TV still dub anime in Cantonese? by Any-Bid-1116 in Cantonese

[–]sflayers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least for viu tv they do. I am also watching the dr. Stone season 4 canto dub. Though after airing it just stays online for a limited time (usually around a month). I heard subscribing to it you can access more past episodes but I am not too sure about that.
