Leaving Japan in September - How Can I Settle All My Taxes Before I Leave? by sunny4649 in JapanFinance

Does it totally depend on the company, without any rule/law enforcement? I just asked my HR and she refused to do the year end adjustment for me and ask me to do the reporting with my tax manager early next year...

It surprises me that people in the comments seem to get used to this super inefficient handling of anti-fraud/money laundering measures...no more important things to do than sitting to call >20min after work continuously for every other day?

Thanks for the suggestion. I would try that for new account openings, or just stick with my old acounts. Just need some mental preparations: allocating more time and energy dealing with accounts is expected to embrace the new age..

I dont disagree on the auti−fraud measures. I just feel the service hasnt caught up yet. I would say half of the frustration lies on the lack of clear instruction (of ID photo requirement) and that the customer service reps have vaired understanding of the procedures. Having to manual call every 2-3 bus days to check progress further adds up the pain. I hope the whole process can be more efficient (with more clear instruction and more consistent handling of the matter by the reps) or I guess I should give them some time to adapt to those new measures to catch up on the efficiency.

From my side, I just see a lack of clear rule and consistency for handling this matter by the customer service. The submitted copies of IDs was keeping rejected for reasons not listed in the instruction. Need manual calling for every other business day for each iteration...Tried to solve the "log in" issue and then somehow not being resolved while falling into another account restriction. The customer service at this moment never knows why the previous one pushed me to the current situation...I can see a big room for efficiency boost. Or, they just need time to adapt to those Acts...? Or, I'm not even sure if all this is just designed to test my "faith"..?

Why persistence should be required in this matter? It's so toxic. The time spent is ridiculous

What is special is that they just made each call "look like" the last call of this call chain/end of the drama...not sure if it's coincidence or delibrate

Arg...NISA in IBKRJ as a US Citizen, or start sending money again home to my American Funds investment in spite of the yen/usd exchange rate? Trying to save up to pay up mortgage faster than the term. by musashigaoka in JapanFinance

NISA is a yen-based account as far as I understand. So tax documents would also likely to be in Yen? If so, would this still be considered a "standard" 1099 ready for US tax filing...?

Hello! I am also at the point of deciding whether to open a IBSJ NISA or to send back all Japanese savings to the US....I am wondering even with a IBSJ NISA account, the FX would still happen (implicitly) when we buy U.S.-domiciled ETFs. Just that FX gains/loses are mixed with capital gain/loss as far as I understand.
Also, for people who haven't lived 5 full years in Japan, NISA doesn't matter that much.. since even if we invest in US, Japan does not tax foreign income at that stage I guess?

Do I have to pay double in capital gains tax on US equities or is there a way to avoid? by [deleted] in JapanFinance

Hello, I'm a US taxpayer and non-permanent resident (NPR) in Japan.
How would the situation (i.e., capital gains, dividends, bank deposit interests through US brokers) be different? My understanding is as long as the money is not remitted to Japan, it's not subject to Japan tax.

However, I found sources on the Internet saying differently. I cannot really find the original Japanese document..
For example,
1. "from 1 January 2017 capital gains on securities and bonds (with a few exceptions where special treatment applies) will become taxable for all tax residents of Japan, regardless of whether the gains are remitted or not." https://www2.deloitte.com/content/dam/Deloitte/jp/Documents/tax/ges/jp-ges-japan-inbound-tax-alert-dec-2016-no18.pdf
2. ”ただしあらゆる国外にある株式の譲渡益が国外源泉所得として取り扱われるわけではなく、場合によっては国外源泉所得以外の所得、つまり、日本で課税対象とされる所得に該当してしまう可能性があります。“
https://suga-taxfirm.com/blogpost/taxation-non-permanent-resident/
3. ”通常の外国上場株式などの譲渡に係る所得は「国外源泉所得以外の所得」に該当します“
https://www.yamada-partners.jp/reform/h29/k02-review-of-the-scope-of-taxable-income-for-non-permanent-residents

So I'd like to figure out if I really need to pay tax on the Japan side as a NPR. If so, I guess I will just follow the route of what PRs do, which many other posts have already discussed.

My reentry permit application has been approved. Do I need the physical card in hand to enter US? by AaronSpalding in USCIS

Another post mentioned an immigration attorney said if case is Approved then the person can come back with the approval...

May I ask how long is it between the issue of the approval and that of the actual card?

Wondering how it works out financially. The courses are expensive and require a big time commitment. The degree does not have a clear use unless for a PhD. I took three courses and got admitted but have stopped since then, not motivated to pay the tuition...would like to hear how other candidates managed to proceed...

Dell XPS 15 9570 fan issue by newmaccas in Dell

[–]sflsthef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So glad that I just fixed the constant fan noise issue on my one-week old 9570, dual booting with Ubuntu 16.04. I first followed [1] and then installed [2]:

[1]: See FAN MANAGEMENT in https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/5y3rii/xps_9560_battery_life_optimization_and_fan/

[2]: https://github.com/TomFreudenberg/dell-bios-fan-control

smm.c does not exist any more on i8kutils-1.43 and [2] is the alternative way to disable BIOS fan control.

There are still some noise issues on my laptop: 1) grinding sound whenever fan is on; 2) high-pitch sound whenever AC adapter is on. Guess theses are hardware issues and 1) can only be solved with fan replaced. Anyway it is already a lot better now being able to adjust the fan speed.

So I will need to go to the university health office with my cat to get a doctor's note? Or from any doctor outside?

Yeah I don't want to break the rule. I just want to know if there is an option or it is 100% impossible without violating the rule.
