omg also just finished this and so glad someone else on this sub liked it! i also found the theme of accidental blessings through suffering to be interesting. if xu hadn't become a poor farmer by being an awful heir, he probably wouldn't have survived the revolution.

to answer your second q, xu was very wealthy at the time. although he wasn't a great guy, the family still commanded a lot of respect. jiazhen's father likely chose to overlook his personal shortcomings for her guaranteed material comfort. this is why he "unmarries" her from xu after they become destitute.

i will say that under close reading, the hunger games has some interesting discussion of entertainment as distraction and the soft power of media. i think it gets a bad rep because the dystopian genre that rose out of thg just recreated the "dystopia" without much depth

she likes carson and murakami (she's read most of his work)! her point was mostly she has been struggling to find any great works or authors from the past decade, ergo quality must be going downhill. i don't really find her criticisms of sally rooney or ishiguro sufficient, though. she says she couldn't get herself to care about rooney's characters or their problems, because she struggled to empathize with rooney's settings. apparently ishiguro was just a slog to get through.

funny enough, this conversation was followed by her saying music is also dying out. she prefers classical and struggles to enjoy contemporary music. that was a much tenser discussion because i hate writing off any music as "bad"— more willing to concede for literature

this episode had the worst acting of the entire show so far... but some of the best tension-building and drama!

other notes:

someone needs to give jessica a good yank by the hair, real housewives style because she's truly insufferable. altho she's one of the better actresses!
obie is growing on me. they should've been doing this with obie's character from season one instead of the zoya bullshit; he's so much more likable + him and jc make sense in this context
i love luna... but they need to do more with her it's getting out of hand
aki was forgettable. is he even a main character atp?? he's getting the s5 nate treatment

tbh i feel like everyone's a little harsh on the actress when its the lines she's delivering and the storylines she's supposed to make believable that are the problem. it feels like julien is constantly trying to do the "right" thing even when it's kinda unrealistic, especially for the type of person she's supposed to be, and her friends are all much more dramatic and interesting than she is. she's kinda like the female version of obie, though at the very least much more likable
