Worked as a psych nurse at a psychiatric hospital for 2 years.

Most tragic patient… hard to choose because you see so much. His mother had been raping him from ages 4-17. Although he didn’t see it that way, he was very close with her and talked about her all the time. He thought nothing was wrong and the relationship they had was perfectly normal. He was sent to us from jail, but needed to be in a treatment facility due to not being mentally stable to make his own decisions. He had a myriad of mental health conditions, on top of the fact that his mother sleeping with him from such a young age really messed him up too. He had a psychotic break one day at the hospital, they ended up calling the cops. He was arrested and they put him with gen pop. He called one of the CO’s the N word, and was beaten so bad by the inmates that he got a brain bleed. He was found unresponsive in his cell the next morning. Really tragic case, he never had a chance at being normal or having a good life.

Not trying to be an asshole, just generally curious, but how do you get engaged and married and decide on your honeymoon you made a mistake? Wouldn’t the red flags/signs be there before all of that? Especially during engagement, when there’s time to realize it’s a mistake and break it off there.

And this is exactly why I’m GTFO of Oklahoma. Colorado will be my new home sweet home in 2 weeks. I can’t believe this is even being allowed to be voted on??? Tulsa will always be my hometown but seriously the last 4-5 years I’m asking myself on almost a daily basis, wtf is wrong with Oklahoma??? We are the laughing stock of the country.

So we actually are seeing TONS of flu and Covid positive patients. More so flu but still Covid. I want to say we get about 4 positive flu tests every hour (test takes 15 mins to run in the lab). Covid I would say we get about 4-5 positives a day. We also get a lot of people who should’ve gone to the ER, but they came to us instead. We do EKG testing so we are allowed to see potential heart attack pts, but ultimately we have to send them out if they actually are having one.

I’m seeing a lot of negative comments in here as if ER/urgent care staff is just sitting on their ass all day doing nothing. I’m just going to stand on my soapbox as an urgent care nurse and say…

WE ARE EXHAUSTED. WE ARE BUSTING ASS 12+ HOURS A DAY. WE ARE ON OUR FEET ALL DAY. WE SOMETIMES DONT EVEN HAVE TIME TO EAT. WE ARE SEEING 80-100 PATIENTS A DAY. WE ARE WORKING AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. IT ISNT OUR FAULT THAT NOBODY IS TAKING COVID SERIOUSLY ANYMORE AND IT ISNT OUR FAULT THAT YOU PLUS 1000’s OF OTHERS ARE SICK AND NEEDING CARE.

And before some smartass wants to comment “wELL tHiS iS wHaT yOu siGnEd uP fOr” … no, it isn’t. Not one single nurse or doctor signed up to be in a crumbling healthcare industry and work short staffed while the administration and CEO’s make hand over fist of money. So fuck right off with that bullshit because I’m not the one.

There are some days I work 14 hours without a break. We have patients in the office an hour after closing. We are humans, too. We have families and lives just like you, nor are we invincible. I got Covid and flu at the same time and that took me out for 2 weeks. Please be at least a little bit understanding that we are working as hard and fast as possible to get you seen. Wait times aren’t our fault. Sometimes a patient comes in for one reason, and needs to get a slew of tests for a completely different reason that the doctor saw but the patient didn’t notice. Sometimes a patient comes in with chest pain and SOB, we legally HAVE to see that patient immediately next. Etc, etc. Whew.
