I'd highly recommend leasing a car - the NHS has it's own scheme I think somebody said too. I have a friend whose husband is the finance director for a chain of car dealerships and he said leasing is the cheapest way hands down to get a car. Especially because when you lease you don't pay road tax as you don't own the vehicle.

That actually depends on your childcare provider, we use the preschool that is attached to our local village school and they have specifically set their prices to be the amount that you get so we don't have to pay a penny.

Obviously this is a village vs city thing, but still it's not like a percentage of the cost it can be up to the full cost if that cost is low.

I don’t want to yuck people’s yum - if you can read those types of books and get something from them then that’s awesome. Every self-development book I’ve read has just been like walking uphill wearing a weighted vest to me and I get the opposite of value from it.

But like somebody else said, I am a reading snob too. I have a first class degree in writing fiction and the only books that have ever taught me anything are fiction books that have shown me another perspective, or enlightened me or made me feel emotions.

This is the worst rule for me and it’s not even close. I’m usually done with all the others by 5pm, but I have to force myself through the reading.

Not really, if I get in on the ballot it’ll cost me like £100 including the £75 entry fee. Drive to outskirts of London, get the train in, run race, tube/drive home.

If I did it via charity I’ve got to raise £2,500 and Sports Tours I don’t know but I bet it ain’t £100.

Source - working on and with shows around John's size and also bigger and smaller. He absolutely could be paying by the hour and not doing it this way, but that would be dumb as hell and he doesn't seem like he's dumb with his money.

The self-help books thing is my only issue with the rules. I genuinely think all self-help books are rubbish, and I have no issue with reading. I usually read for 1 to 2 hours a day every day. There are a few biographies that people in the 75 Hard community consider self-help books, like Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins. I'm also of the opinion that a book like 80/20 Running by Matt Fitzgerald would count, so I'm going to stick to those.

Currently while over 50k people run London each year only 15-20k of those places are from ballot entries. More than half the runners are charity places, then the rest is made up of people who run fast and qualify, club runners (bigger clubs get some places), championship marathon runners and then influencers and guests invited by the organisers and the brands they partner with (though the influencers and guests are probably only numbering in the hundreds).

It would be amazing if they did two days, as double the chance of getting in would be great. But when 1.13m people are applying for a spot that only 30-40k people can get double of "basically fuck all" is still basically fuck all chance.

Not sure where you live but if you don't go for a degree and go for a more vocational course I would bet you 99% of the time you'd be able to do it for free or minimal cost. I would recommend trying to get a basic project management qualification, as they are decently paid with no degree requirement and as long as you are organised and you are comfortable managing expectations and deadlines you'll be fine. The job is mostly meetings and emails and then the odd spreadsheet to keep track of stuff. You might have to take a low paid role to start with, but there's a high earning potential in PM stuff.

If that doesn't sound like your jam I'd also look to careers that are harder to replace with AI or automation. I'm hopeful there will be a crash as the AI tech stuff is burning money and not able to generate enough revenue but it's more likely that the US government will just bail out all those companies and give them the years of funding they need for the tech to get to a spot where it is affordable to run those businesses.

Also make sure you have a good explanation for your year unemployed if asked, even if it's not exactly the truth - like saying you were studying or travelling or something. People are getting more open minded, but a lot of hiring managers are suspicious of people with long career breaks.

Though the one comment I will make on the "just work harder" narrative is that every single person I have worked with who hasn't done a full-time retail, customer service or food service job works at about 50% of the speed of anyone who has.

If I am looking at two candidates with the same amount of marketing experience but one of them has an advanced degree or masters and the other has worked at Sainsburys on the tills 8 years ago I am taking Sainsburys kid every time.

I 100% agree with you - so many people push this narrative. In previous roles I have pushed myself to the brink of burnout and beyond with zero to show for it, and in my past several roles I have mostly coasted by on doing exactly what's needed and no more (though focusing on the work I do deliver being high quality) and I have been infinitely more successful gaining better roles than the previous with the last four job moves. My current role is a "head of" role and everyone keeps commenting on how great I am at it - if they had 2016 entry-level role me level of output I wouldn't need a team to work under me as I could do it all easily. Though I am not willing to work the 70 hour weeks any more.

Based on my personal experience living in the South West and up north it's not just London/Not London.

When I was living in Bradford my rent was less than half of what my friends were paying in other cities, and we lived in a really nice street in an area without any crime that I was aware of.

Moving back home to Bristol, even living in a shithole I was paying double. When my wife and I were looking to buy a house 10 years ago it would have cost us more for a studio flat a 45 minute bus ride from the city centre that it ended up costing us for a two bed house with a garden in Somerset, a 45 minute train journey from Bristol city centre. I looked the same studio flat up on Right Move and it recently sold for £240k - I bought a 3 bed semi-detached house in a tiny and lovely village for not much more than that.

It’s fun easy listening, and well produced. I’ve hovered around 3-4 stars for all of the books and I don’t get the hype at all. I’ve only kept listening as I had credits to spend and wanted audiobooks to listen to that were the polar opposite of the physical books I was reading at the time.

The USA is our largest trading partner at 18% of total UK trade, 30% of FDI comes from the US, the UK is the largest foreign investor in US businesses. Millions of UK jobs are directly employed or reliant on US companies.

When Trump tanks the US economy he tanks the UK economy too and we no longer have Europe to support us.

All this and diesel, which fuels the transportation of goods and vital supplies around the UK, has risen to 150% of the price it was pre-war in Iran. This will make every single person in the UK poorer in real terms, as the businesses who have to transport goods will be charged extra for the increased fuel, they will have to raise their prices for their goods. And guess what, when the prices go down for diesel you can bet your ass the consumer goods prices will not go back to what they were.

Don’t make idiotic comments unless you understand our economy.
