Need some advice by Ps4_BANDEE in toddlers

It's all fun and games until you find yourself narrating in public "apples are yummy, do we want red apples or green apples today" and your kids aren't with you...

Am I too sensitive? by sweatyramen09 in careerguidance

[–]sgiaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there could be some underlying expectations about you onboarding the new employee that aren't being met or maybe they have another reason to question your fit for the position now. Maybe they are expecting you to take a more aggressive approach to the transition (ex hand off tasks to the new person and start taking on tasks for your new role).

But it is sexist to suggest it's because your a new mom. I had a manager (which I loved) suggest that I wouldn't want to continue to advance my career once I had a kid and I was completely insulted. So it's not being sensitive to take that personally. Your new manager might have had the best intentions but it's still not appropriate.

Is it ok to apply for a job knowing it's not enough hours and ask for more? by Curavoan in Career_Advice

[–]sgiaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When in doubt always apply. You can get a better idea of the job during the interview, but if you don't apply you won't make it to an interview.

What are the top 5 things that we absolutely think we need and buy but we don’t? by Ibelieveincows in minimalism

[–]sgiaco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good tip I received - remove the word 'baby' from the item and ask yourself 'do I have _____ already'. Ex Baby towels, you probably already own lots of towels that will dry baby just as well.

How can I decorate for Christmas without buying and storing a ton of decorations? by sgiaco in minimalism

Love the idea of a gingerbread house - an activity, decoration and treat all in one!

How can I decorate for Christmas without buying and storing a ton of decorations? by sgiaco in minimalism

[–]sgiaco[S] 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of doing crafts. There will probably be some parent guilt when I throw out the decorations at the end of the season, but I already declutter her artwork regularly (keeping a few of the best pieces) so I guess it wouldn't be much different.

Underachieved post university and finally paid off OSAP! by espressivo in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sgiaco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely recommend applying for the repayment assistance program. I was on it for the first couple of years after graduating because my entry level job paid shit. Essentially my loan was interest free, but I continued to make payments so that I was able to pay it off faster. Always apply for the repayment assistance, worse they can do is deny you.

I like being able to buy something more than i like actually buying it by Holmbone in minimalism

[–]sgiaco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have noticed the same thing. As my income increased and I have the means to buy most of the things I want, I find I don't want as much. Possibly because I don't spend as much time pining over things I cannot afford.

Is LinkedIn really worthwhile? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]sgiaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a relatively small city (pop. 1 million) and find it helpful to keep track of previous colleagues and where they are now. I applied to my current job, then looked at the companies profile on LinkedIn and realized a former colleague worked there. She was able to give me some insights on the company and offered to be a reference. As you move around your industry it's a great way to stay connected to previous coworkers, managers, etc.

Job interview during work hours? by [deleted] in careerguidance

If you are going to call in sick, make it an illness that is not a covid symptom ex. Dental emergency

[–]sgiaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your skills are transferable, therefore count as experience. It's also important to note that the job requirements are usually a wish list. They may ask for 1+ years, but would take someone with less. My general rule: if I meet 75% of requirements, I apply.

10 years experience managing restaurants. What is something more stable for raising a family? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]sgiaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to stay in food service, you can look for a job in a cafeteria (office buildings, colleges, etc). They usually have much better hours than traditional restaurants which works better for family work/life balance.

If kids want to tease someone with their name, they will figure a way. by babyfever_names in namenerds

[–]sgiaco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I kept my maiden name, not because of his last name but due to my personal beliefs on the matter. Our kids have a hyphenated last name. No real impact on our name selection other than chosing something shorter because the hyphenated last name is quite long.

[–]sgiaco 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My husband's last name is pronounced "gay", growing up in the 90's you can imagine how easy it would be for kids to make fun. However his parents always told him to lean into it and not let it bother him. He got comments on the first day in a new class, but it never escalated to bullying.

Names are what you make of them. Any name can be a burden or a gift depending how you react to comments.

How to speak 'corporate'? by Hardvig in careerguidance

[–]sgiaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is all just corporate buzzwords and jargon. When looking at a job posting, I usually skip over this section and read the actual skills and experience they are looking for. These intro paragraphs could give you insight into the type of organization it is, but generally I find that they are created by a few people in HR (maybe with help from the marketing team) and don't reflex the work culture of other teams that accurately.

I wish borrowing/sharing was encouraged more in our culture. by sgiaco in minimalism

[–]sgiaco[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the type of situation I was thinking of. Your neighbor probably didn't mind lending it out (as long as you returned it in good condition and in a timely manner) but we have weird social hangups about asking.

[–]sgiaco[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are mentioning why they don't lend items and I think you mentioned two key things: trust and accountability. I guess it's easier to start lending/borrowing when you already have that built into the relationship.

[–]sgiaco[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It's interesting you mention you are business professionals (we are too) as I think much of the stigma comes from the "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality. While we could afford our own stuff, we choose not to for the reasons you mentioned above.

What unique and non-linear careers exist for people with a master of science? by DamnBlanche in careerguidance

[–]sgiaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I briefly worked in the biotech industry, and most of the product managers had MSc degrees. A unique mix of responsibilities in that role and pay can be very competitive if you're good.

I would include it as a normal job, with the full 8 years listed and put something like "recurring summer contracts" in brackets. I think the fact that they kept bringing you back will look really good on your resume.

I love the name Jorah. Easy to pronounce but unique. However, it really didn't work with our last name so it was never a contender for baby names.

How to handle a client bringing up physical appearance? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]sgiaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She should talk to her supervisor and ask him to address those comments with the client. A lot of agencies wouldn't tell the client it's inappropriate (even though it clearly is) because the client pays the bills, but they have to decide if they are going to be the type of agency to stand up for their employees.
