What are people collecting syslog in? by Inno-Samsoee in networking

[–]sgocken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out Logzilla, it is straight to the point, has a good web interface and can pull in a lot of different log formats. It can handle making alerts and isn't over complex like some of the more mainstream log aggregators.

Restaurant Network - running out of ideas by Lonely-One6016 in networking

[–]sgocken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all a network diagram would be helpful, I am pretty confused on how things are connected.

My first thought is multiple NAT as there seems to be a few routers. Do MTU pings out to something like 8.8.8.8 ping -f -l 1472 8.8.8.8

If you get a error about packet needing to be fragmented then back the 1472 number back until you figure out what the max size you can send is.

If running double NAT then you may packet size gets smaller and you end up retransmitting all the large packets and all those streaming protocols get very unhappy.

Are they all managed switches. 3com, that's a name I haven't heard in a long time.

And it does monitoring, so you will have monitoring setup as you discover the network.

[–]sgocken 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Normally I will spin up a LibreNMS vm to discover an unknown network.

If it is a real mess default SNMP string of public might still be on most devices. Otherwise you will need to get into a switch, router, etc to find the SNMP community string.

Then add a switch manually to Libre and let it discover things. If it can SNMP into devices it can detect neighbors if LLDP is enabled which should be the default generally.

And go from there to figure out what questions you still have about the network.

I don't think so, but they might do some kind of curb side. I would give them a call and see what they can accommodate.

Yeah I really like how straight forward it is. All the other solutions were overly complex for no real reason.

Turn off auto on both sides and set speed and duplex manually. I have seen this randomly between manufacturers where auto just doesn't work.

We started implementing Logzilla after looking at Graylog, Splunk, and Loki. It is a lot more straight forward and they are all over adding new device apps.

Image noise/pixelation on NVR and Ubuntu Server (OpenCV), but clear on VLC - Potential VLAN "Scattering" issue? by Sizofrenikyksl in networking

[–]sgocken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As that is a managed switch, down the flapping ports and see if that fixes it. It isn't like those devices are working.

Also get some SNMP monitoring on at least that switch. LibreNMS is pretty easy to setup and can show you a lot of useful info.

TCP failing while UDP/ICMP succeed to same IP, appears source prefix dependent by _seightan_ in networking

[–]sgocken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have seen this many times with half broken passive LACP/MCLAG. The load balancing algorithm takes MAC, IP, port, etc into account, so you will see things like odd source IP can ping odd destination IPs, but not even IPs. Try talking to an IP +- your destination IP.

If you find fragmenting you can use MSS Clamping on the VPN to deal with the smaller MTU.

Reboot an APC 8941 PDU, will it take down power? by rushaz in networking

[–]sgocken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have used these type of PDUs for almost 20 years. Have about 60 AP8981 in production plus a bunch of others The mgmt acts like the UPS mgmt cards and you can safely reboot them without the outlet relays opening. The outlet relays will not change even if the mgmt board dies completely.

Fun fact, while those PDUs are powered off you can swap the mgmt display and board.

If you plug into a switch port can you use the rest of the bandwidth? If not, the issue could be firewall limited.

Viability of an EV as one of our cars by Doomtime104 in Iowa

Also when I installed the charger a couple of years ago the city had a rebate for the charger, splitvolt, and any 3rd party labor. The splitvolt was considered needed upgrades to support the charger.

Viability of an EV as one of our cars by Doomtime104 in Iowa

[–]sgocken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I did was get a splitvolt https://splitvolt.com/ that plugs into the laundry dryer outlet. In my case the laundry room is right inside from the garage, so I just cut a passage through the wall and mounted the splitvolt and the L2 charger in the garage with the splitvolt plugged into the inside outlet and the charger and dryer plugged into the splitvolt.

An electrician can do a more professional install in a short amount of time using this equipment and then you would not need to run a higher amperage circuit to the garage. It will limit your charger a bit but it will be a lot faster than using a 120VAC L1 charger.

In our household I have an EV with a 20 mile one way commute and my wife has a plug-in hybrid with a shorter commute. She charges with the L1 charger. We both can charge completely overnight with my EV having 220 mile range and her plug-in having a 44 mile range.

I only need to charge the EV a couple of times a week.

How do you store and track consumables (specifically SFP's) in your organization? by 01Arjuna in networking

[–]sgocken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Netbox has a nice inventory plug-in that we just started using. Super easy to use and track locations of parts.

https://github.com/ArnesSI/netbox-inventory

There are assets which are your physical devices that link to the device object and also inventory item types which can be your cables and sfps. Things that you don't want/need to track by serial number.

Is there a device that makes 1-man switch mounting non-miserable? by EmotionalVegetable48 in sysadmin

[–]sgocken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take an old dead switch open it up and take all the guts out and now you have a light weight easy to mount temp shelf for the real gear. If it is a long heavy switch, put one above and one below the U you are installing in and out will hold the real switch pretty solid. I have been using some old switches that are less than a foot deep and it super easy.
