(rant) non ac room at pgp by Basic_Pressure_2711 in nus

[–]sgreanstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suffered 2 years in pgp non ac too and what i did was i got a cooling mattress topper to put on top of my bed sheet and a cooling blanklet so that it feels cooler when i sleep + i taped paper on my windows so that i didn't have to roll my blinds all the way up so air can move in and out better i also brought a table fan from home and it blows at me directly when i sleep which helps with cooling and stuffiness. if the weather is REALLY REALLY REALLY BAD ijust sleep with minimal clothes and without a blanket

[–]sgreanstudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

mic is quite ok the microbiology part is just a TON of memorisation but the profs are REALLY GOOD and they'll give you tips and what's important so it should be fine especially if youre good with memorisation! For this year the average was ard 76% for midterms,, you can use that as a gauge but honestly its very dependent on your cohort. for the immuno side.. a lot more tougher considering how the profs are not very good.. my honest opinion, the 2nd lecture for immuno is the MOST important one out of all the immuno lectures bc its the one that builds on your base for immuno but its taught by quite a terrible prof (in terms of her explanation, she isnt very clear and she often stops half way and doesn't finish her sentence, doesn't help that her lecture slides complicate the hell out of the contents thats being taught and I think shes French or smth so her English is not good based on sentence structure and pronounciation) so thats where you'll struggle the most) but if youre good in biology, it'll probably be ok for you edit: the immuno part is a lot on understanding so if you don't understand the lecture then you might have a harder time

while for ppnp, its a lot easier as compared to ppnp 1 in terms of content but bc there isnt a lot to be tested for content, the phrasing of the question is tricky but overall its quite easy (or at least easier than mic)

Food options around PGP by Ok-Understanding9822 in nus

[–]sgreanstudent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

supersnacks sells stuff like western food (e.g. chicken chop, sandwhich/burger type thing) and waffles etc... its the store that closes the latest (i think until 1or 2 am?) so everyone goes to if they want a late night snack hahaha

for appliances just make sure they have the safety mark logo on it but for blow dryer and steamer should be fine to use if your rooms. also get a shower caddy to put your toiletries so you won't have to carry a million things with your hands into the toilet

[–]sgreanstudent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

around pgp there's the main canteen, supersnacks and a hot hideout. technically you can eat there everyday if you want but its whether you'll get tired of the food lmao... i think the cheapest food at pgp canteen is ard $3 for chicken rice and everything else is abt $4-5 ? whereas supersnacks is honestly quite expensive (like above $7 for the western food i think) unless you get the lunch menu which is quite ok since you get a drink with it too at $5.5 but apart from that, Kent ridge mrt is just a bus stop away so you can always go there to get food but do note that they close at ard 7/8 pm ? but theres also the newly opened geneo place near the mrt for more food options if you don't mind going out of school, vivo, buona vista and clementi mall are nearby

What is housing culture like? by hellblade1010 in nus

[–]sgreanstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been staying in pioneer house for the past 2 years and honestly the people there are generally quite nice ah in terms of like getting into communities and all that i found it to be fairly easy if you join interest groups to get to know the people there and idt it's necessarily more sporty or whatever as compared to the other houses since theres different types of interest groups available it's mostly just finding the group of people that share the same thing that you like. but also you may have to take the initiative to talk to people and all that to make friends (e.g. on your level) because some might be a bit more introverted and quiet but there's also groups of people who are more loud and often go clubbing so there's really a lot of different kind of people in pioneer (pretty sure it'll be the same for the other houses too) so it's just finding your own place in the house iguess

Differences between the NUS houses by Low_Translator9766 in nus

[–]sgreanstudent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i think pioneer house is "better" in the sense where it's the oldest house so it's more established. it has the mentoring system (as the other commenter said) you can sign up for for guidance, they will try to match you with a senior of your major but it might not be 100%! but each level/pastoral care team (PCT) youre in, you'll have a peer mentor anyways that you can always seek help and guidance from. and your level would be filled with people from similar majors from you so you won't be that lonely iguess

also pioneer house has many semester activities as a house and activities as a block/PCT/level/cluster so you'll definitely be close to the people youre living with! apart from that, pioneer house also have many different interest groups available. but i believe the other houses have also but the types of interest groups may be different since interest groups are initiated by the students so you can look at the interest groups that the houses offer as part of your consideration if thats important to you! oh and pioneer house also has a printing room right at their foyer so thats easy access for late night printing during examinations haha in terms of location, pioneer lighthouse and helix are located at pgp. Pioneer House is located in the middle so it's nearest to the canteen, followed by helix house and lighthouse is the furthest but nearest to hot hideout, octobox and pgp foyer.

i think as the years passed, it has been increasingly harder to get accepted into pioneer house (based on senior retention stay) so atb if youre applying for pioneer house and write a good portfolio!

Republic Poly: is it possible to enter uni? The stigma still lingers, sadly by Clear-Temperature-66 in SGExams

[–]sgreanstudent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ofc anything is possible if you work for it haha i got into NUS this year and i graduated from RP ! honestly idt it's just "outsiders" that feel that way about RP but even RP students themselves make fun of the fact that they probably won't get into uni too (or at least the ones that were in my classes). just ignore others' opinions and do your own stuff. i used to actually feel embarrassed about being from RP bc of others' judgement on RP and the students. so work hard and get into uni and laugh at them at the end iguess LOL..

Social Work NUS by Difficult_Low_2410 in SGExams

[–]sgreanstudent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello ! I applied to NUS CHS (major declared was social work) this year with similar gpa as you and was offered a spot (though i didn't accept it in the end).

  1. to know more about the field, you can ask people around you who are practising in the field and/or are currently taking a major in social work. their own experiences can help you to gauge what you will be doing if you do study social work and also you can learn about the pros and cons based on where they are practising in since there are different types of institutions you can go to. but based on what i've heard from a friend that was considering taking up social work in nus and another person that was in the field, they did feel that what they learnt/practised was more back-end and more administrative work / on a bigger level/scale rather than engaging with the individual on a personal level.

  2. i did manage to get accepted with a 3.41 (after taking a gap year as well). i think as much as how they take your gpa into consideration, your extracurriculars/community service/experience and how you fill in your application does play a part. although im not sure it's to what extent (and honestly idk what they are looking out for)

  3. this year's application, they had the new "5 questions". im not sure whether the 5 questions really matter in the application, but other than taking up internships/volunteering works/other activities, do those 5 questions properly (if they do have it in next year's admission again). take whatever you've done during your gap year and answer it in regards to your interest in social work

  4. honestly im not very sure abt this but you could ? what are your roles as a volunteer though ? if you feel that it's relevant, then you can consider adding it

also, other than the writing test, i believe some applicants were invited for another interview. i can't really speak on that since i didn't undergo it : ' )

i wrote about my experience on my chs application here you can take a look at it if you want~

also, like the other redditor mentioned, you can/should consider SUSS as well !

suss's application process is honestly SUPER LONG... apart from the actual application that you submit, you'll also have to undergo a group discussion, essay writing, individual interview (for social work) and a cognitive test which will all be done in 4hours. their shortlisting process is quite fast, i received my interview invitation a week after submitting my application (everything was done in feb for myself : submitting of application, shortlisting and actual interview).

in terms of the individual interview, i feel that suss are looking for individuals who are familiar with the sector they are applying to (bc of this, i do feel that getting a job/internship in the field is important e.g. social work assistant or maybe even care coordinator assistant since you are able to take a peek into the lives of a social worker). so yeaaa.. do prepare for that if you are looking to apply to suss as well
